The problem with this is threefold: 1.) Not all African Americans speak like that. 2.) The dialect is shunned by status quo, and if you speak in such fashion, you're considered unintelligent, not worthy, sub-human, etc and 3.) Many people don't understand the history behind the dialect and it contributes to the problem.

You speak as an idiot:

why is he apologizing? this is what America is becoming. Really when describing black peoples dialects (which I'd say 75 % have) what other words are you going to use? African American??

Do you even know what dialect is? If so describe it, and then tell me how you arrived at the 75% figure. Do you have any evidence to support the claim?

I guess that would work if Obama was from Africa.

Where was his father from?

This kind of reminds me of when Colin Powell said there was still racism in America.

There is, a whole lot of it, and with Obama being in office a lot of the gloves are coming off and people are exposing themselves.

Hate to break it to you Colin but the main source of racism comes from black people.

ROFL! History doesn't prove that, friend.

I can remember getting called a "CRACKA" in high school and the teacher did nothing about it, had I dropped the "'n-word'" bomb I would have been expelled and most likely jumped.

So how does this prove blacks are the main source of racism? In your case, based on what you stated, it would mean blacks were the main source of bigotry, discrimination and prejudice in your life. However, this is your life and your life does not reflect the truth. Moreover, stop using the terms racist and racism out of context.

ARRRRRRRR RABLE RABLE RABLE and both races separate themselves anyway because skin color is a culture.

Why don't you elaborate on this a bit. What do you mean by "both races separate themselves anyway because skin color is a culture"?

case in point, I try and use the actual "N" bomb and ATS censors it. Grow a pair ATS

HUH?
Grow up man.

BET (CMT) NAACP (KKK) Rap music droppin the Nigga bomb (the only white man to succeed in saying nigga in a song was Bob Dylan)

HUH?

look internet tough guy, I have my opinion and you have yours. I'm not an idiot, I have beliefs.

Hmm dialect is a variation of a language right? Or do I need to post a wiki link for that? A lot Southerners have dialect "the southern draw" , a lot of Northerns have the whole spin on how they say things. Guess what too, we don't know where Obama is from! So to say he is an African American would be inaccurate. It was said early in the discussion that many blacks keep the walls of racism up them selves. The town I live in a lot (75%) of blacks I have met are rude and they do have a certain way the speak TO EACH OTHER. If you as a white person tried to have a conversation in the same dialect and tone as a black person you would be ridiculed , don't believe me? Try it for yourself.

I don't believe in racism at all, one of my best friends is black, but it is my belief from PERSONAL EXPERIENCES (not ATS ramblings , youtube videos, or wiki links) that black people do continue to voluntarily stick to themselves. I think they see that a whole bunch of kids that aren't black try and emulate the whole "thug, gangster, drug dealer" theme and feel that because they are of the same skin color as the said "thug, gangster, drug dealer" that they have some type of power of people. Many white people in America are afraid of blacks because of how they are portrayed in the media, and we all know how media influences the masses.

Even though it was insensitive and ignorant , Reid's statement had a lot of truth to it and that's what gets people upset. People have deep rooted subconscious emotions and misconceptions about race that they carry around with them , many people are truly unaware that they think this way. I was a car salesman working for Lexus and later Porsche a few years ago in my mid twenties, I would get older Caucasian Couples and Older single women comment to my managers constantly after deals were written. "He's so professional and well spoken" I would get the "Well Spoken" comment at Least once a month. During these conversations I would think... "What Exactly am I supposed to sound like?!?" The funny thing is that the people that said it truly and genuinely believed they were giving a compliment , that was the sad part.

I didn't get offended because I figured that these people didn't have any friends that were Black and had nothing to go off of other than what they see on Television and movies... which would reinforce their preconcieved stereotypes.

When you define a single person by the stereotypes associated with their race , whether you know it or not you are being prejudiced. When you make statements that start with "Black people ALWAYS... White People ALWAYS... Green People ALWAYS..." you are being prejudiced. Sometimes you have to step outside of yourself and realize that not everyone has the same mindset & experiences in life that you and your friends have (Being a Jersey Boy , living in Hawaii and having an Alaskan and a Texan as roomates taught me this...THANKS USMC)

At some point people need to get real and sometimes reality hurts. I'm sure If Barack Obama looked like Yahpet Kotto , he wouldn't have been elected. If that statement bothers you... ask yourself why.

Listen to what the man said: "with no Negro dialect unless he wanted to have one". Who cares about the word Negro? What's unbelievable is that he's saying point blank that BO is a fake.

Anybody that is bold enough to make a racist comment like that should step down. In fact, people should be asking for his head on a silver platter.

Oh darn, I forgot, Reid is a Democrat.
Never mind.

look internet tough guy,

Internet tough guy? Huh?

I have my opinion and you have yours.

The difference between our opinions is your attempt to pass yours off as fact.

I'm not an idiot, I have beliefs.

Who said you were an idiot? I said you speak as an idiot, not that you were an idiot.

Hmm dialect is a variation of a language right? Or do I need to post a wiki link for that?

No a wiki link won’t work, but I suggest you go back to grade school.

A lot Southerners have dialect "the southern draw" , a lot of Northerns have the whole spin on how they say things.

How is this new found revelation of yours remotely important?

Guess what too, we don't know where Obama is from!

You don’t have to know where Obama is from to know his father was of African descent. (Some would argue his fathers ethnicity could be classified as Arab but that is another topic.)

So to say he is an African American would be inaccurate.

See above.

It was said early in the discussion that many blacks keep the walls of racism up them selves. The town I live in a lot (75%) of blacks I have met are rude and they do have a certain way the speak TO EACH OTHER.

In your previous post you made no mention of 75% of black people in your town speaking a certain dialect. In addition, you didn’t say 75% of them were rude. What you did do was make the claim that 75% of black people have a “black dialect”, so the question still stands. How did you arrive at your 75% figure? Do you have any evidence to support the claim?

If you as a white person tried to have a conversation in the same dialect and tone as a black person you would be ridiculed , don't believe me? Try it for yourself.

How did you arrive at your 75% figure? Do you have any evidence to support the claim?

I don't believe in racism at all, one of my best friends is black,

What do you mean by you don’t believe in racism? Are you saying you don’t believe it exists or you don’t advocate it? Please clarify because you’re all over the board now. That’s great that one of your best friends is black. That is a typical line people toss out there ya know, but hey if people want you as a friend so be it.

but it is my belief from PERSONAL EXPERIENCES (not ATS ramblings , youtube videos, or wiki links) that black people do continue to voluntarily stick to themselves.

Black people do stick it to themselves, but I won’t sit here and say, or imply, that blacks are 100% guilty for their plight. Moreover, I will not disregard the fact that institutional deviance plays a major role in blacks continuing a cycle of despair.

I think they see that a whole bunch of kids that aren't black try and emulate the whole "thug, gangster, drug dealer" theme and feel that because they are of the same skin color as the said "thug, gangster, drug dealer" that they have some type of power of people.

What exactly are you trying to convey here? Please elaborate as I clearly don’t understand the thoughts you’re attempting to convey and would like clarity.

Many white people in America are afraid of blacks because of how they are portrayed in the media, and we all know how media influences the masses.

Many white people in America are afraid period. And the media wouldn’t be much of an influence if people would learn to turn off the idiot box and read books that enforce positive learning and growth.

All Reid has to say is that he misspoke and all will be well again. Classic Dem. recovery tactice. Would he have owned up to these statements if the book wasn't published? Oops!

Just another wolf in sheep's attire who said what is really on his mind.

I am just glad a conservative didn't utter these same words. The ATS boards would be on fire right now.

The silence on this thread is deafening. Where is the outrage from the left about this racist who is supposed to be the Democratic Leader.

The double standard is mind numbing. Fortunately, Reids statements should further negate the standard racist accusations that fly from the left like flies to a turd.

Reid needs to resign. Flashback to 2002 when Trent Lott lost his leadership role for statements that were far less incendiary. Senator Obama was one of his detractors who called for his resignation.
This is Lotts statement that led to his crucifixion by the left.

“When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years, either.”

bigjournalism.com...

How does this compare to Reid's statement? Lott was called a biggot, a disgrace, a racist etc for this. Reid's statements are far worse!!

Common Lefties. Let Reid have it. I want to see Reid's head on a platter for this.

Not surprisingly, our President who apparently has no balls has already dismissed Reid's statements. I would expect a hug to come next.

Before I forget. I have to mention Bill Clinton's statement back during the primary stating that

Former President Bill Clinton's efforts to persuade Sen. Edward M. Kennedy to endorse his wife's presidential bid fell flat when Clinton told the Democratic lawmaker that just a few years ago, Obama would have been serving the pair coffee.

Obama the coffee server. Perhaps a stint at Starbucks or a stint as a Capital Hill Page would do him some good.

Was just watching FOX News (as usual), and they had a member of the Black Caucus on.

The question asked was "What is the difference between what Harry Reid said and what Trent Lott said"

The first thing out of her mouth was.............."Consider the source."

That just goes to show you that it doesn't matter what you say, it matters if you are a Democrat or Republican when you say it.

Unbelievable???......Not really!

Alexandro,

As usual you post some self serving quip, but anyone looking at your threads can instantly see you intent. You never fail to amuse.

Just one example

Seems to me, you are ridiculing people who call for a resignation over racist emails in that thread. So do you have an alternate personality, or are you just cherry picking, and being disingenuous.

Most of you in this thread are missing the ENTIRE POINT REID AND OTHERS WERE TRYING TO MAKE! Whether he was right cough cough politically correct right or wrong is a different issue. BLACK PEOPLE USE EBONICS AS A WAY TO TALK! Just like whtie trash in the country talk a certain way......call it redneck if you want. Funny thing is both are very similar. I've sat there and watched Oprah default back to her ebonics when addressing black people. This is a fact. Ebonics is VERY much a part of black culture. Ebonics is stupid and black people need to move on and quit using it as some sort of default it's a black thang cultural icon. Because that's what it is. Hell I can "talk black" and used to have to when I attended a public high school in St. Louis. That's all Reid was saying. Whether he shouldn't have said it is another story...........just because something isn't politically correct doesn't mean it's not true.

I'm really sick and tired of the war against the middle class white male. everything we do and say is wrong. Gimme a break!

No, it means consider the source.

Thurman ran on a segregation platform, Lott lauded him.

Trent Lott was a complete bigot. One who voted against the civil rights act and was a flagrant homophobe. That yahoo even for some god knows reason voted for Strom Thurmand. This country would look a whole lot different had Trent Lott had his way.

Saying something stupid, and doing something stupid are two completely different things.

[edit on 1/10/2010 by whatukno]

And that's still happening right here on this thread ^^^.

Alternatively, from my post on a similar thread:

Everyone knows that blacks think the word "negro" is a derogatory term - 1 strike against Reid. But the whole statement he made boils down to "the average black person is not electable unless they have light skin and talk like an educated white person". Second and third strikes against Reid.

Would a Republican be allowed to say that and survive? We all know the answer to that.

So, step up and do your part to break the double standard because it's the right thing to do.

Or are there not any of you that are capable of criticizing one of your own?

Reid may have used politically incorrect words, but he was correct; Mr. Obama's a light skinned Black and uses the English language well. Keep in mind folks how long Bill Cosby has been pleading with the Black community that education, particularly in the usage of English, is of vital importance to advancement, not government welfare or misplaced equal opportunity programs.

While I don't agree with Mr. Obama's political agenda, he's a socialist at best, he's a good role model for young Black men, i.e., educated, well dressed, ambitious, hard working, and has a nice family. As a matter of fact, he's a good role model for all men, except that I wish he were a bit more conservative; actually, a lot more. ;-)

By the way, truth in advertising; I'm a Caucasian Hispanic conservative male and registered Republican (no Bronx cheers now).
