All interesting info....I will have to direct Mrs. Gazrok to this thread, as she's long been diagnosed with this.

I must take exception to the notion that Fibromyalgia is "all in your head". I can assure that the pain is more than real, the fatigue is beyond simply being depressed, the irritable bowel is not in your imagination, and on and on. During the lengthy diagnosing period among the specialist that I was evaluated by were Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and Neurologists. Each time the conclusion was the same, I was psychologically stable and intellectually sound. Part of the problem facing those of us living with this condition is that we appear perfectly normal on the surface leading many to the conclusion that Fibromyalgia is a psychologically-based condition. That stigma is hurtful and only contributes to the depression caused by feeling that you have been run over by a bus. So, please do not say that Fibromyalgia is "all in your head", because it is most certainly not.

And by the way, my ex-wife attempted to paint me as psychologically unstable leading to two independent psych-evaluations while incarcerated both findings were identical to the previous examinations.

I apologize for having come of as saying that myself. I do know what it's like. I feel that the psychiatrists and other scientists doing this research are saying that to just prescribe us more debilitating medications.

Not a problem. It is a bit of a sore point with me, did not mean to over-react. I do agree that medications, prescription or otherwise are not the answer. A low-to-moderate calorie balanced diet, physical activity that can best be tolerated (Tai Chi is excellent) and occasional execration, herbal teas, and above all Faith. In my case it was vital that I was able to find my spiritual center and release stress and negativity. As my mother always told me, "Life is what you make it."

S&F Thankyou so much for this. It's going to take a while to digest it all. On a personal level this is the first trully useful information I have aquired on ATS.

Just quickly scanning the symptoms, it seems I have had every one for nearly 18 yrs as well as the precursor circumstances and have only recently heard the term in relation to my ongoing medical care. I never really took any notice nor went in search of any info before.

I can see I've got some digging to do.

Thank you again.

Hey big boy have a guess why I'm responding in this thread ?

Yup unbelievable but true lol

My first symptoms started about 15 years ago and developed into a chronic state and on a number of occasions would end up being taken from work straight to A&E often passed out.

Here's the thing I was never ill, when I say never I mean literally I never missed a days work in over 20 years my medical records were still on paper !! last visit around the age of 14 .

No bugs viruses just the hangovers at the weekend lol .

Decided to replace my sugar intake with the new wonderstuff Canderel (Aspartame) 2 per cup many many cups per day for over a year.

That is the only thing I can think of that was so different in my life before I started down the road of misery.

I cannot produce evidence of this of course but the only other toxic crap i consumed was in food or beer.

People beware sodium nitrate !!!!!!!

Also beware of Dr Quacks " monavie," it contains Sodium Benzoate .

Helpful tips ? - Forget hugging a tree hug a radiator

Vibration Training is not a cure, but helps with the symptoms . As one of the things people with Fibro and Chronic Fatigue are told is exercise is very important, but its an oxy-moron to how they feel.

Vibration Training is an involuntary form of exercise and helps create serotonin which helps clear the mental fog and reduces pain and inflamation.

Go to this website to read more about it vibration-training-advice.com ( no marketers are allowed on the site, it is for consumer protection info only )

I too believe its something in our diet causing the massive increase in Fibro among the population, and as a mortician I know how something like that can lead to an early death. Usually through simple lack of movement.

I really hope one day it is pinpointed.

Hi all,
I'm just linking this thread regarding the XMRV retrovirus and the possible connections it may have to CFS and Fibro. There are some compelling reasons to look into and ask the doctor about this retrovirus and it's connections (for anyone suffering from either disease) it's also further evidence that neither disease is "in your head" and may help with further studies for treatment. Please give the information a read.

P.s. not a thread plug, I really just wanted to pass the information on...

"Fibromyalgia" is and always was, a PSYCHOSOMATIC illness, originating in the Autonomic Nervous system. It's the Autonomic Nervous system's attempt to quell unconscious rage, anxiety, fear, and other negative feelings or emotions.

I suffered from "Fibromyalgia" for 6 years, and with the right therapist who understands chronic pain disorders, I was completely pain free within a few months of intense therapy, and have been pain free for 2 years.

I have given talks and have been a guest on chronic pain panels. I have researched the subject probably more than anyone I have met. There is no such thing as "Fibromyalgia". It's a word to describe a syndrome with no known Biological cause and no blood test to prove origin.

If anyone REALLY wants to heal their "Fibro", they might want to seek out books or DVDs by Dr. Sarno, Dr. Shubiner, or search the web for "AOS". (Autonomic Overload Syndrome) or TMS (Tension Myositis Syndrome)

Autonomic Nervous System "disorders" are responsible for many chronic pain syndromes.

RSI, back pain, "joint pain", Chronic Acid Reflux, Skin Disorders, Benign but annoying heart rhythm problems, "Chronic Fatigue", basically anything that is chronic, but no provable cause.

Western medicine is only beginning to embrace psychosomatic illness. Unconscious emotions or feelings can literally transform your bodies chemistry. Chronic pain in muscles, joints, or other soft tissues, is caused is caused by an oxygen deprivation which the Autonomic Nervous System is creating.

Your body is in constant unconscious "fight or flight" state, you're just not consciously aware of it. Biologically there is no mechanism for chronic pain. Most people who experience "Fibro", have injured themselves previously and said injury became chronic, spreading throughout the body in multiple places, to the point where you feel like you've been run over by a truck.

There are even certain personality types that are prone to chronic pain disorders. Newer brain scanning tech has shown recently that even chronic pain sufferers show a change with white matter in their brains and neuro pathways, which is reversible, by the way.

I'm not saying it's "in your head", it's a very real pain, caused by a 2-4% oxygen deprivation. But it originates in the brain.

This all may sound like horse crap to most, but it's a very REAL issue. I would consider myself an expert in chronic pain related syndromes, specifically "fibro". That isn't an appeal to authority on my part, but I HAD to study it because I was crippled for years and had no options left. After all the drugs, all the exercises, the 30,000 dollars I spent on doctors, PT therapists, and thousands of tears later...I found out it was all from my Nervous System. Thousands to Tens of thousands have found this to be true, and there are many blogs online which are about chronic pain.

When you feel embarrassed you blush or sweat. Or you get angry and your heart skips a beat. Throw up when nervous. Pass out from a traumatic shock....these are all psychosomatic reactions to thoughts or emotions. You cannot deny that the mind and the body are connected this way, which Western Medicine does still to this day.

If anyone suffers from chronic pain, I would tell them to look into TMS or AOS if all other efforts fail.

Here's some good news though. "Fibro" (TMS), is very curable with a mind/body approach. It has one of the biggest success rates of all the chronic pain disorders. If read about or seen THOUSANDS be pain free with occasional flare ups.

I could write about this all day but I need to go, so good luck if you choose to accept the possibility of what I say being true.

I was so glad that I found this thread today! I even bookmarked it.

My story;
I was diagnosed two years ago but have had it for more than 10 years. Boy did it take a toll on my marriage before we understood what was happening to me.
I've run into my fair share of medical problems to deal with over the years; poly-Cystic Ovarian Syndrome, (I had to study that and find the best way to get over infertility, I went with a low-carb diet and it worked.), preemie babies (2 of them a 27 weeker and a 34 weeker.), Autism (Including sensory integration problems, very late speech, and central auditory processing disorder.) I could look up and deal with all of this, but the Fibro is such a horse of a different color. So many opinions, ideas, and swindles out there.

My doc has me on neurontin and flexiril, both of which help tons. But I still can't function anywhere near normal. I talked to a friend who has fibro and she swears a gluten free diet cured her. I am thinking about it. It seems it would be a lot easier than the low carb I was on for a few years. I had a Chiropractor promise to make me feel a bit better for $3000 and a lot of work, Yeah didn't do that.

I live in an area that does not have flouride int he water and I don't very brush my teeth so I doubt that is my cause. I do stay away from artificial sweeteners because I know they make me feel worse, I don't know about stevia. Anyone tried this? I know I need to get off Pepsi, but some days I just need to get somethings done...

I used to be addicted to endorfines. Running or even walking 7 miles a day. Now with fibro if I can walk through the mall I need a nap.
It's hard to redefine your life with fibro, I went through about 9 months of mourning for my old self, but it's still hard to take.

To get rid of fluroide you can just get a filter for your kitchen tap, or a pitcher filter. Those are carbon based and get rid of fluoride.

There is a toothpaste called Toms of Main that comes fluoride free.

Or it comes with natural fluoride, not the stuff that is a byproduct of aluminum manufacturing.

Other chemicals to get rid of in your homes: cleaners. There is very little regulation for cleaners and most have a haz rating of 1. Which is toxic.

Use only natural detergent or fabric softeners. Those are the worst chemicals around. AND they don't break down in teh environment.

Never use chemical fabric softener, it is one of the worst chemicals out there.

I would just like to say one thing, distilled water is not good for you to drink a continual basis as it puts your cells out of an isotonic solution which is not healthy for them, basically what happens is that the distilled water has no solutes in it so when that goes into the cells it makes the cell have no solutes so if your cell gets exposed to things that more solutes in it than your cells then all the water leaves the cell which kills the cell. this is called a hypertonic solution for the cell...not good

Sesame oil is high in Omega-6 fatty acid which is not a good thing for fibromyalgia. Half the stuff you mention would not be a good idea.

en.wikipedia.org...

There is some benefit using Sam-e or drinking cabbage juice. S-Adenosyl methionine.

There is good and bad in everything depends who you talk to.
Please explain why Omega-6 is bad for people with Fibro?

Wikipedia says "Some medical research suggests that excessive levels of n−6 fatty acids, relative to n−3 fatty acids, may increase the probability of a number of diseases and depression."

Its speaks of excessive amounts of Omega 6, and i don't trust Wiki anyway.

Some quick info i found -

goodfats.pamrotella.com...
Linoleic Acid is the primary Omega-6 fatty acid. A healthy human with good nutrition will convert linoleic acid into gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which will later by synthesized, with EPA from the Omega-3 group, into eicosanoids.

Some Omega-6s improve diabetic neuropathy, rheumatoid arthritis, PMS, skin disorders (e.g. psoriasis and eczema), and aid in cancer treatment.

Although most Americans obtain an excess of linoleic acid, often it is not converted to GLA because of metabolic problems caused by diets rich in sugar, alcohol, or trans fats from processed foods, as well as smoking, pollution, stress, aging, viral infections, and other illnesses such as diabetes. It is best to eliminate these factors when possible, but some prefer to supplement with GLA-rich foods such as borage oil, black currant seed oil, or evening primrose oil.

americanheart.mediaroom.com...
Omega-6 and omega-3 PUFA play a crucial role in heart and brain function and in normal growth and development. PUFA are “essential” fats that your body needs but can’t produce, so you must get them from food.

Tremendous research!

My wife is a sufferer, as is my mother (Freud cannot be reached for comment).

I had a doctor friend who was also a sufferer (the great majority are women). He did a ton of research and study. We both noticed that most of the people who suffer from fibro are also survivors of childhood sexual abuse. His theory was that it largely involved the amygdala(? - primitive area of the brain).

My wife has had some relief with Lyrica. Some benefit from Neurontin, some from antidepressants.

As best I understand, the diagnostic process consists of the doctor poking you in twenty three spots and if you say OUCH to at least 12 of them, you have fibro.

I was told that the flares occur with changes in the barometer. So now all we need to do is stop the barometer from changing, right?

I wish everyone well with this. It's ugly.

Thank you for this informative article. I do appreciate the work you put into it, however I wish to add two things.

One, Selenium is the best way to chelate most of the toxic chemicals, especially heavy metals, out of the body. Once those are removed, the body can repair itself. Let us remember that city water supplies are increasingly found to contain heavy metals like lead and arsenic, as well as the chemical fluoride.

The suggestion that borax should be taken by mouth, is, I believe, dangerous. Though the main chemical itself, sodium boron or boride may be non-toxic in small amounts, we don't know what other chemicals are added to borax the laundry detergent. I would edit your article and take that suggestion out as it may very well be dangerous and possibly illegal to recommend.

There are boron vitamin pills people can order or retrieve from health food stores which would be much safer in my opinion.

A recent article on AboveTopSecret suggested that Chronic Fatigue Syndrome might be caused by a virus. Tumeric is excellent for cancer cell fighting and virus inhibiting. I recommend that and Neem leaf. Also, my sister, against my advice to her, allowed her pediatrician to give one of her children the swine flu shot. Guess what? Yeah, her other children and everyone who visited with them a month later, even, got a violent form of the flu that antibiotics almost didn't touch. I couldn't afford a doctor, and my wife's and dad's antibiotics didn't help them, so I took my Neem and co-Q10. But it didn't help this time. Finally I read about onions helping people with the flu, but I tried it and it didn't work. However, someone suggested sulfer could fight the flu, along with vitamin d. I had been taking vitamin d, and it kept my symptoms mild compared to the other victims, however, as soon as I took the msm, methylsulfurmethane, a non smelly form of sulfur, i immediately got better. And it is making my other injuries heal faster as well.

I sometimes wonder if the fight against eggs at the breakfast table was a way to weaken our immune systems, and onions seem so sweet these days they almost have only half the sulfur they used to contain.

I recommend, for the symptoms of Chronic fatigue syndrom and Fibromyalgia, virus fighting herbs and msm and vitamin d. I know there are many people who advocate a vegatarian diet, but I find that diet to be a weakener of the immune system, not one that strengthens it. However, I do hope, in the afterlife, oddly enough, to be able to be a vegetarian. So I am not against the idea, only against the current healthiness of it.

Once again, thank you for the information. It did help, and gives us all hope that we can become stronger, even as the government tries to make us weaker.

It is a flouride free toothpaste I have been using for years. Guess what, less cavities without the poison.

The only ingredient I do not like in it is the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate derived from coconut/palm kernel oil.
