Spectacular satellite images suggest that Mars was warm enough to sustain lakes three billion years ago, a period that was previously thought to be too cold and arid to sustain water on the surface, according to research published in the journal Geology.

I find this really awesome. However, I don't understand how they make the assumption that it was water and not another liquid like methane on Titan or something. Our idea of Mar's past atmospheric conditions might be completely wrong.

Anyway, i'm not a conspirator, so I'll take the information as it's presented to me, with the assumption that the folks at the space station know more about geology than I do.
