The universe today article discusses an interesting issue about alignments. What it really discusses is measurements taken in 2d and in 3d. In a sense
a photo is a measurement in 2d. When you look at the night sky it appears to be flat. Some constellations are composed of stars that are no where near
each other. They only appear to be near each other on the "flat" surface of the night sky.
The first part of the article is about the 3d position of the Earth and where the solar system is relative to the galaxy. The second part of the
article is about the 2d position of the sun against the "flat" surface of the sky.
I'm sure you were aware that when the zodiac sign is Sagittarius, the current sign, you can't see it because the sun is in that constellation. Of
course, we know the sun really isn't in that constellation in 3d, but in 2d the sun is in the constellation.
