Aussies swim for lives as 3m wave hits near Mentawai Islands after Indonesian earthquake

A GROUP of Australians on a surf charter boat off Sumatra jumped into the water when a three metre high wave, generated by an undersea quake, forced another boat into their craft, causing an explosion.

Possibly relevant to solar activity, NOAA cancelled the CME yesterday. Ham transmissions coming in from all over here today, so no communication problems - yet. Hope all stays in good order - much needed during a large quake and possible volcano eruption.

Thats the 7.7 off Sumatra, Indonesia.
Mag 7+ usually saturate all seismographs Worldwide, no matter where they are.
Shows the power/energy release eh

You might note that the stations closest to indonesia are more saturated, like Philipines, Thailand, China, Australia etc ........as one would expect

Tsunami warnings in Indonesia called off ruvr-en Tue, 26 Oct 2010 00:58:00 +0200 Tsunami warnings, issued in Indonesia following magnitude 7.2 earthquake, have been called off. The epicenter of the quake was under the ocean bed 245 kilometers west of the city of Bengkulu on the west coast of Sumatra Island populated by 1,5 million people.

Indonesia tsunami kills 100, leaves many missing independent Tue, 26 Oct 2010 12:58:00 +0200 A powerful earthquake triggered a tsunami that pounded villages on remote islands off western Indonesia, killing at least 100 people and leaving more than 160 others missing, witnesses and officials said today.
news item

WTF

Why did they cancel the tsunami warning so early on?
I'm really having serious doubts about the reliability of the USGS and the NAOO overall.

The GDACS seemed to have had it right with their tsunami model (this time)

I don't think USGS or NOAA have anything to do with tsunami warnings in the Indian Ocean. That would be the responsibility of the Indian Ocean Tsunami Warning System.

Perhaps she was questioning the reliability of the reporting from the USGS, which I would assume that info is then used by the other authority to determine if a tsunami is possible.

If the location/mag/depth is not accurate, then neither would the tsunami forcast.

I'm not saying that is the case here...but maybe just a possibility?

With a bit more research...the watch issued by NOAA was cancelled at 1642Z, 2 hours after the watch was issued. The tsunami was recorded at several stations around Indonesia. The most distant was the Cocos Islands, at 1612Z.

The watch was not cancelled until well after the affected areas were hit.

A SIGNIFICANT TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED BY THIS EARTHQUAKE.
HOWEVER...SEA LEVEL READINGS NOW INDICATE THAT THE THREAT HAS
DIMINISHED OR IS OVER FOR MOST AREAS. THEREFORE THE TSUNAMI
WATCH ISSUED BY THIS CENTER IS NOW CANCELLED.

FOR ANY AFFECTED AREAS - WHEN NO MAJOR WAVES HAVE OCCURRED FOR AT
LEAST TWO HOURS AFTER THE ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME OR DAMAGING WAVES
HAVE NOT OCCURRED FOR AT LEAST TWO HOURS THEN LOCAL AUTHORITIES
CAN ASSUME THE THREAT IS PASSED.

www.weather.gov...

So, while it is the responsibility of the local governments (and IOTWS) to follow up on the reports issued by NOAA. I don't think NOAA can be called to task for what occurred. NOAA issued a warning. Were people warned? I don't know.

OK I'll let them off the hook this time.
My concern originates from previous NOAA Pacific Center Warnings that were interpreted incorrectly ( one from a quake in Tonga and the Samoa 2009 quake) causing panic in those cases. 3-4 months later we find there were 2 Mag high 7's at Samoa at the same time, what use is that info 3 months later?

Not a lot anyone can do when the tsunami hits within 19 minutes ( Beleratsok, Pagai Is.)

GDACS do a good set of maps, but they were way off with the heights.

Everyone in the earthquake monitoring system needs to do better, 6 years since the last big one (tsunmai) in that area and what has been achieved?
Nothing.

Perhaps thats because your'e looking at a Foreign earthquake Monitoring Netwrk (USGS)

These are the Australian Experts www.ga.gov.au...

Rare but not unprecendented, there have been a couple in the area just the last 30 days as you can see from the list
Date: 05/10/2010
Time (UTC) hh:mm:ss: 10:24:43
Latitude: -29.598
Longitude: 143.710
Depth (km): 10
Magnitude: 2.5

Date: 29/09/2010
Time (UTC) hh:mm:ss: 09:09:25
Latitude: -29.568
Longitude: 143.752
Depth (km): 0
Magnitude: 4.0
Felt radius: 62 km (approx)

Most of New South Walse quakes are in the Blue Mountains and along the coast.
Heres a kml file for Google Earth showing;

Magnitude between 2.0 and 9.9
Date From 01/01/2010 To 28/10/2010(dd/mm/yyyy)
Latitude between -9.0 and -45.0
Longitude between 110 and 155

Aussie Quake Search Result

I downloaded it directly from their search page and it doesn't show todays quake, you can add that using the GE search, copy and paste the co-ordinates -29.5766, 143.5431
Its a bit to the west of the previous quakes

Geoscience Australia are a pretty slack network, they never replied to my e-mail a couple of months ago asking what magnitude type they use
