Something really strange is going on - I was just here at home on my dial up checking the quakes - i got bumped off line - took me over 1/2 hour to get back on = the line kept telling me all circuts are busy, please try your call later = I was about to go put the news on to see if something happened as I have not got that recording in many, many years - since 911

Annemarie - might your outage have been caused by the sonic boom just being reported being heard in Seattle/Washington area?

The booms didn't knock out the 911 services, the services were loaded with calls about the sonic booms and was practically unusable (your call cannot be connected, we're sorry. Please hang up and try your number again).

Aaarrggh, aarrrgh.. I asked this ages ago and got no reply.. I wanted to know why this outline was being formed - i.e. the geology/geography of what it's encircling.. and any other observations people had.

I mean, I know the quakes are following the faults, etc, but to an amateur the landmass the faults surround look different.. I assume there's a geological reason for the quakes going around it- hard rocks/strata etc?

I see the circle too, it seems to be getting more and more defined. I hesitate to even think what it could possible mean. Hopefully nothing but... I admit it is bothering me.

So basically what they are saying is that there is a movement of the plates that is the equivalent to the effect/power of a mag 7 quake, but which is not accompanied by earthquakes (aseismic) other than the preceding deep tremors.

From the Wiki article:

For some GPS stations around the ETS, there is an apparent slipping back or reversal of direction of the normal tectonic plate movement, although the fault motion remains consistent with subduction.

It goes into reverse? *walks away with mind boggling trying to imagine reverse subduction*

The only thing I can think of that fits into the vague catagory of that is "glacial rebound" . I was just reading about Puget Sound and Olympic Peninsula on Wikipedia and the PS was where the Wisconsin Glacier was.
Maybe the Jan Fuca Plate goes under the American Plate and gets stuck at some point under there, but keeps moving in behind the stuck point until so much pressure builds up that it rebounds back hense "reverse subduction".
Just an idea.

This?

I see three there but the list says 2. I have not looked to see if there is anything else that might be the third yet.

Yes - Thank you
your sooo good to me
. The USGS started out saying 2 then 3 then 1 now we are up to 2 again.

Maybe this receeding plate which is locked is pulling on the North American plate and ripping it apart. Wait - maybe the North American plate is splitting apart as in the area that appears to be the circle above posted and is pushing the other plates back - Yellowstone is undergoing subsidence - the magma has to go somewhere - thence the pushing - idk - thought off the top of my head.

There obviously isn't a fixed formula to to covert from Mb to Mw

this quake shows 5.8Mb and 6.1Mw but the Fiji one 2 days ago was 5.7Mb (less) and 6.2Mw (more)

How can that be

todays Marianas

16th's Fiji

There was a sharp earthquake felt in Whakatane this morning that went on for about 4 seconds, 1 large jolt then a bit of a roll, and then another large jolt at the end. Can't find any details of it on ndbc.noaa or on earthquake.usgs or on geonet

Link below

www.geonet.org.nz...

I'm sure it was later than 11.29pm. How long does it take before an earthquake shows up? The earth definately moved over this way, Whakatane Bay of Plenty New Zealand. Just curious what magnitude it was.

It only came on the website at 5am this morning. Must have had the boss come in early checking up
, they put on some quakes near Rotorua that weren't on last night too, that happened a couple of day ago (or I missed the Felt one)
