In answering a earlier question on ~our~ dedication on following the ~patterns~:

Earthquakes travel across the globe and exert stress in surrounding faults...

By following ~patterns~ and watching trends we ~might~ be able to see where the next one occurs...

As slim as the chances are it's better than none?

Keep a eye on the mantle/faults..

Ile tell you what i think is happening, judging from the USGS world earthquake map right now, that line of 5.5 ish's that curve around, it looks like the antartic plate is pulling all the other plates to the right resulting with the curve from left to right from the two on the australian plate, then the ones in the pacific plate look like they are crushing the nazca plate between itself and the south american platecreating the large 6 magnitude on the west side of the south american plate.

From the USGS website you can see smaller earthquakes curve around the top edge of the south american plate and have a large earthquake on the other side 4 or 5, cant remember, this could explain why we had small earthquakes in even england recently?, seems like the antartic plate is having a nice tug on all the other plates to the right. Just an idea.

Ummmm could be, why?

My humblest apologies for getting the name wrong, I had already typed half the reply and couldn't remember your name, but I was close eh!

No personal offense intended in what I said in the post either, the quake was downgraged after you posted it, by a whole 1 magnitude, thought someone should say so.

I think if people are going to bother to post quakes that are automatically generated by computer and not checked by a geologist then they should keep an eye on any upgrades and alter their post or make a new post when it happens.

You wouldn't want the French to get in a panic over a 4.7 when it was really just a 3.6 would you.

I disagree, my take is that the 3 Southern Ocean 5's are on spreading ridges, there are no subduction zones where they are, the ridges are upthrusting causing the Pacific Plate to expand outwards in all directions. Throw in the Hawaii activity and you see the drift?
Same is happening with that 5.2 Mid-Indian ridge quake, nudging the Indian Plate under Indonesia and against Africa [see that Tanzania 4.5]

I mean the Antarctic Plate has no subduction zones and all those 5's he mentioned are on spreading ridges.
If you have Google earth you can see it clearly, Maps don't really show it.

All you need to get set up and checking out the Plate Boundries is here;

I'm wondering what role the smaller plates such as Cocos and Nazca and Caribbean have in the scheme of things - two in particular due to their closeness to recent Haiti / Baja events.

IMHO I think this is adding to the current instability across the mid-North American Latitudes...

Look close at the faults from the Caribbean/Mexico/West Coast Fault/South America Faults...
