China nabs 5,400 people for online porn in 2009

BEIJING (AP) -- Chinese authorities caught nearly 5,400 suspects last year in a crackdown on online pornography and have vowed to strengthen Internet policing.

Beijing's pervasive policing of cyberspace and attempts to block the Internet are already among the world's most stringent. In a statement late Thursday, the Ministry of Public Security said the "purification of the Internet" and fighting of online crime are closely tied to the country's stability.

Wow... I'm glad this didn't happen over here in the US, I think the numbers would be a lot higher.

I don't know how they think they are going to police this though. There is no way they are going to be able to keep pornographic material out of their internet stream.

I think pornography is really bad when it comes to kids and should be controlled by the parents and such... and child porn should be wiped off the face of this planet... But, regular adult porn will be around forever.

I wonder how far they take the law-I am thinking of the many advertisments on the net that are to some degree,pornographic.
Do these count?
Also,5400 is a tiny amount of people busted in a country as big as China-and they have a massivley monitored internet out there.
