Pakistan: Suicide bomb kills 75 at volleyball site

hosted.ap.org

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) -- A suicide bomber set off an explosives-laden vehicle on a field during a volleyball tournament Friday in northwest Pakistan, killing at least 75 people and wounding more than 70, police said.

The blast occurred near Pakistan's tribal belt, and was the latest bloodshed to rattle the country since the army launched a military offensive against Taliban fighters in the South Waziristan tribal region. The operation has scattered insurgents but provoked apparent reprisal.

Looks like the Taliban is really picking up their efforts on these suicide bombs. The article states that the suicide bomber drove onto the field in a vehicle that was loaded with 550lbs of high intensity explosives. (Even nearby houses collapsed)

32 dead... 70 wounded... and over 300 people on the field at the time of the explosion. What a loss of life.

Also Friday, a suspected U.S. missile struck a car carrying alleged militants in North Waziristan tribal region, killing three men, two intelligence officials said. It was the second such strike in less than a day.

The strikes are part of the U.S. campaign to eliminate high-value militant targets that use Pakistan as a safe haven to plan attacks in neighboring Afghanistan and on the West.

The one Friday happened near Mir Ali, a major town in the region, two intelligence officials said on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record. Shortly afterward, Taliban fighters arrived at the scene of the attack in the village of Ghundi and moved the bodies to an undisclosed location, the officials said.

Thursday's missile strike was also near Mir Ali, hitting a house and killing three people.

U.S. officials rarely discuss the strikes, and Pakistan publicly condemns them, though it is widely believed to aid them secretly.

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) -- Police say the death toll has hit 75 in a suicide car bombing at a volleyball tournament in northwest Pakistan. Local police chief Ayub Khan says Friday's blast in Lakki Marwat was retaliation for locals' attempts to expel militants by setting up their own militia. He says 75 people are confirmed dead.

It just beggers belief, I am sickened by the pure loss of innocent life here, and the question what is it that can be done to stop such horrific attacks. And at the level its happening, is the government doing anything about it? because its seems never ending. How many more innocent people are going to loose their lives in the face out right evil. And these people claim to be religious. What sort of all forgiving god would condone such acts?

I read the other day that we in the west should be on the look out because there have been such threats made to the UK, and the US, how much of that is scaremongering i don't know, but i hope it doesn't.

Pakistan New Year is just getting warmed up.

Sure there will be many more attacks just like this.

Either Pakistan will make more truce with these terrorists or they will declare an all outright war on them.

I am betting Pakistan will go for truce.
