France to rethink carbon tax plan

A new carbon tax that was supposed to go into effect in France at New Year has been struck down, delivering a blow to President Nicolas Sarkozy.

France's Constitutional Council, a legal compliance watchdog, said there were too many exemptions for polluters in the tax plan.

The body said 93% of industrial emissions, other than fuel use, would be exempt from the tax.

The tax was set at 17 euros (£15) per tonne of emitted carbon dioxide (CO2).

I think this is important just because the world may be seeing many more laws like this. Taxing something out of the average mans public use is a common and beneficial way for the government to make some money, and force change. I do not know how the seventeen euros per tone would effect most businesses, but I would guess that it would add up. The interesting part is ninety three percent of the bunsess would be exempt, leveing the lions share of the tax on the little people. There is the rich mans lobbying at work.
