The alleged terrorist behind the Christmas Day airliner plot is said to have told US agents there are more people "just like him" ready to carry out future attacks.

An al Qaida group based in Yemen claimed responsibility for the failed attempt to bring down Northwest Airlines Flight 253 over Detroit as US president Barack Obama pledged to hunt down the plotters.

Meanwhile, photographs apparently showing the underpants filled with explosives worn by alleged bomber Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab were broadcast by ABC News.

The American government pictures show the singed underwear with a six-inch packet of a high explosive called PETN sewn into the crotch, the US network reported.

ABC News said Abdulmutallab was carrying about 80g of PETN, more than one-and-a-half times the amount carried by "shoe bomber" Richard Reid in 2001 and enough to blow a hole in the side of an aircraft.

As more details are released it would seem this was much more well-planned than initially reported. One-and-a-half times the amount of PETN than that which was used by the "shoe bomber", contained in a six-inch packet stitched into his underwear.

Given the above, it would seem that his inadequate and/or improper mixing of the chemicals is the only thing that resulted in this being a failed attempt as opposed to a potentially catastrophic loss of life.

There have been several mentions both here on the boards and in MSM blurbs with regards Yemen possibly becoming the next Afghanistan.

Even more concerning are the, until recently, almost unheard of Saudi air strikes in Yemen that have been ongoing for several months, only recently coming to light in MSM reports.

Apparently the Saudis have been conducting these raids for quite some time, and not being the least bit shy with regards admitting to the same, despite the gov't. of Yemen taking credit for and claiming it the result their efforts all the while.

With that in mind, Yemen's attempts to lay claim to or take responsibility for the air strikes seems more an effort to save face on the global stage than anything else, especially with regards taking a "public" stance against those who would attempt to organize or foment terrorist activities from within their borders.

Given Umar's reported claim of being but one of many, along with the increased military activity in and around Yemen recently, it would definitely seem safe to say that things are certainly going to heat up in that area of the world in the coming days, weeks, months.

Absolutely. Although they claim that the attempted bombing was in response to the U.S. attack on them, the plan had to have been in the works much longer than 2 weeks.

That was smaller than the 1 pound butt bomb used in the assasination attempt on Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Nayef. Even though it didn't kill him, it seems to be proof of concept. Nowit appears that the Yemen AQ are once again thrilled to abuse their anal cavity.

Agreed. It looks like he was to drugged up to do a proper job. Thats why they used a remote detonation with the Saudi Prince I guess.

Yemen is in serious trouble.
In the North the Shiite al-houthi have been fighting the Gov. since 2004.
In the South large groups are trying to secede and form their own gov.
In the rest of the country, al Qaeda has been taking over since 2002.
Not to mention that Yemen is almost out of oil, fresh water and money.

I think they are just saving face for their rich neighbor. Saudi Arabia.

Yemen is walking a tight rope. For several years they have been playing games with AQ. The U.S. agreed to help with AQ, but not the al-houthi. Saudi arabia won't help with AQ, but is bombing the al-houthi. Iran is playing antagonist by supplying the rebels with weapons, funds, and training. The UAE is playing all sides against each other, and everyone needs the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea open to safely transport the black gold, oil.

The only good news, (depending on your point of view), is that the World Bank, the U.S. UAE, Saudi Arabiia, basically everyone is thowing money at Yemen to help stabilize the region.

to find out who else he was in contact with....

Of course there are, it takes a highly sophisticated, immensely intelligent team to come up with a plot to bomb U.S. commercial passenger aircraft with underwear bombs... And of course they must be part of a well funded and organized global terrorist organization who's goal is to instill fear in the lives of all infidels through a series of attacks and attempted attacks which are only a prelude to a much larger real attack which will usher in a new era of war and perhaps bring about some Koranic prophecy.

Meanwhile at the pentagon contingency plans are being readied for retaliatory strikes and preemptive strikes in the now likely event of a major "AL Qaeda" attack in either the U.S.A. or Europe....

Or, in light of new info, maybe he simply did not have time to fully get the contents of the syringe into the butt bomb.
