The search for the historical Jesus has for the most part, been a failure. From
Schweitzer to Bultmann, to the so called 'Jesus Seminar', one reality is certain:
one cannot separate the Jesus of history from the Christ of faith. It is impossible to
chronicle a life of Jesus. The Gospels, which remain, for the most part, the only evidence
of Jesus' earthly life are not a biography or chronological history, but a theology in light
of post Resurrection faith. They are faith testamonies and although they do contain
history, they are primarily subjective. However that is not to dismiss the important
gaines in the historical critical method developed by among others, Bultmann.
