War on fat: California trans-fat ban goes into effect Friday

www.mcclatchydc.com

California will bar restaurants from cooking with trans fat beginning New Year's Day, becoming the first state to crack down on the substance tied to clogged arteries, strokes and coronary heart disease.

The ban is hailed by supporters as a way to protect diners who routinely have not been aware of consuming trans fat at some restaurants because they don't see the meals cooked or the ingredients used.

Some will say this has been coming for some time, and they might be right. What I see in this is one step tword a police state. Those of you around who have read about the new world order, will know that those in the know have said that the people will ask for it to happen. The U.S. representatives have passed a health care bill, and if the government is responsible for your health care, now they can be responsible for your health, which means you can be forced to lead a healthy life. Welcome to the police state.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, as you said, this can certainly be viewed as more government intervention. On the other hand, I think that the scientific evidence is fairly clear on trans-fat, namely that is does have harmless consequences to the circulatory system. Given that there is an alternative that is much healthier, I don't see a big problem here. BTW, trans-fat was used so extensively because it it cheaper, and lasts much longer than natural fats.
Your worry about a police state are well founded. However, that has been a long time coming, and I don't think that THIS issue is a watershed one.

I actually think this trend (which started several years back in NY) is going to make a Dramatic difference in the USA

I can correlate the lowering of American educational performance directly with the rise of fast food year by year...

Poor nutrition...

But worse...

If Trans fat can clog the Arteries in your HEART, generally about the size of your thumb... what about the smaller ones running from your neck to your BRAIN, what about the capillaries IN your Brain...

A Fatty clogged circulatory system will absolutely, positively make you a freaking Idiot over time, probably starts when your really, really young too...

I completely think American general public stupidity and dietary change went hand in hand...

May they next CLOSE down 90% of the fast food industry, an American rise to a better nation can only follow...

I wouldn't even THINK about this as a Police State issue btw...

Stupid people with no circulation in their brains...

They include COPS. Lawyers, Judges.... Politicians...

it's kind of funny but back in the day, when people LIKED the cops.... People used to give them APPLES along the beat, good healthy APPLES...

Today they stop off for Big Macs... and then Taze a 4 yr old in a fit of anger 30 minutes latter...

Our whole nation has changed and I really think few people realize how much crap junk food has caused this...

Not just Trans fat...

How about MSG in fast Chinese or other foods?

What's a COP like after a belly full of MSG? Lethargic and stupid or in a fit of RAGE

I know when I eat too much MSG, I want to kick someone in the teeth.... without fail, I have thrown tantrums... and it's embarrassing and it's awful...

So Police State... it's not much of a police State if the bio chemical behavior of the officers is sane and they carry a positive outlook of people and can think clearly.... after all whatever LAWS get passed it';s the Cops that decide by action IF they are enforced...

So I can see this only as helping the police state situation to be better and fairer...

Yea, lets blame the restraunts. Lets blame everyone else besides yourself for the bad nutrition that you get. Lets not take any personal responsibility on the issue. I rarely eat at fast food places because I like to cook, but sometimes, I really dont feel like cooking, and have a craving for some of those foods. Lots of times, it is the only thing open late night after having a hard night of partying or working.
I think a lot of people just can not handle taking responsibility for their own actions. I sure like how in the article it states that a lot of people dont know how the foods are cooked when they eat out. Is it really that hard to ask the waiter or waitress how they prepare the food? I mean, when I was a waiter at a bar/casino, people were always asking me about how food was prepared. I think it should be none of the govts GDmned buisness what I consume.
Now since they are pushing this, there is only one reason why Ican think of them doing it besides all the dumbasses who called for it, and that would be because our Govt is now running healthcare. They want to be able to control what you do, and how you live(as another poster pointed out).

A government that cares about someones health is laughable.

The government doesn't care about your health, they just want your money, and will give you drugs that are supposed to help but half the time the side effects are worse then what you have.

If the gov is really going to change food, then we will see what monstrosity they turn it into.

can i ask a really dumb question why the hell is every one so quick to jump on the cali band wagon. now they are going after transfat. so probably next year most of states will follow suit why.? company i work for the whole last year completely switched around its manufacturing process because starting fridaY in california it will be illegal to sale plumbing fixtures with lead in them. how much of our annual sales goes to cali about a fifth. why did we switch is it better for health purposes not really people have had lead in their plumbing for hundreds if not thousands of years but since cali has new law everybody else will probably go along with it. but i say why are they not one of the poorest states in union goverment finance wise.

I'd like to see the legislation on this. Naturally occuring trans-fatty acids are not harmful, only the man-made, hydrogenated oils are.

There are trace amounts of naturally occuring trans-fats in many healthy foods, and this BAN would make it legal to deprive Americans of these foods.

It's not all personal responsibility...

If you work and you have a 15-30 minute break, you HAVE little choice but to eat what's offered sometimes...

If your out at night and the only places open are these chains you have to go really out of your way to find something not horrible for you...

If your poor and it's cheep you might have to give in...

The LEAST they could do, is NOT let the food be poisonous and bad for you if they Buy up and buy out every possible restaurant location practically along busy strips where people entertain themselves or work...

There are Billions in the Industry they own spots at every available location... and I am a health nut and it can be HARD to be out and about and entirely avoid it if your hungry...

That being the case they should absolutely be held to some standards...

Give me a break dude, these arn't just any fats. Transfats are poisen. They are, for the most part, synthetically created. They cause cancer as well as heart problems and diabetes. Trans fats need to be banned from the country... Inless you like having unnecessary poison in half the meals you eat.

NY actually started this... it's actually just something that is Easy to do something about... it just means switching fryer oil, it's not really a big deal... it won't taste different in any way....

In fact the reality is entire fast food chains made the switch several years back knowing this was coming, Most of the fast food establishments have already made the switch nation wide, it's not like this law will come into effect and change anything

odds are... the fast food your eating has already made the change months or years ago and you never knew the difference...

Some things are about control or worth getting annoyed at...

Healthy food isn't one of them...

If it was up to me they'd have to use Olive Oil...

Americans resist anything lol... in Japan they vitamin fortify most of the Beer, what's actually wrong with that? how does it affect anybody?

There really is this aspect of OUR RIGHT to kill ourselves and I agree with that... to a degree, I am 100% behind do what you want in your own home... and if you want to fry pancakes in pork fat you have every right to...

But Mc D's they serve Billions of people... They should have to add some vitamins and reduce fat and all the rest, because bottom line...

You won't know the difference and people sometimes have no choice but to rely on this crap for a meal... they deserve better if it affects nothing for anyone...

Like I said... your already eating it cooked this way in most locations around the country and it doesn't bother anyone, mo one even noticed...

I really like a nice burger and fry combo, sorry if that makes me a slob. The thing is, I also am really antitrans fat. Luckily most places have gotten rid of them, so I don't have to worry about getting diabetes from my french frys.

No it just applies to cooking in Trans fat, there is nothing like that going on bro, you just can't Fry food in Pseudo Plastics anymore... I have a good buddy in the industry, several major chains made the change of their own accord years back...

I hear what your saying, but that is simply not the case... the industry itself is behind this, they have done studies for years and don't want to end up in the same boat as the Nicotine companies, they have other things to hide like addictive additives and things like that, they don't want their own studies to be released on exactly how bad this way of cooing actually is, The chains themselves are largely behind this move, they know if added up they are responsible for more deaths than big tobacco, they give away tons of money every year in law suits or fighting them... I have personally witnessed a heart attack in a Mc D's and it happens every single day, in a person of ill health 2 cheeseburgers can kill you dead as it stands...

And the IQ studies are real, the stuff makes you dumb as a rock... the Industry itself wants this before they really get tarnished if this comes out... it's most self encouraged and self regulated, the law is for the hold outs looking at the bottom line... of $$$

I believe I will chime in on this discussion:
1) The nanny state is never a good thing, and then the goverment is involved it is a diseaster. Ask yourself this, what has the US State and Federal Government done for us lately? These are the same people who have come out with a few doozies in the past and it is a game of money. Ok so Transfats are suppose to be the bad guy, however, I seriously doubt it. Any study that the federal government does is seriously flawed in the nature and technique that they are performed and report on. For those who are old enough, does any one ever remember the Sugar study the government did? As it was reported, Sugar was suppose to give a person cancer. Ignor the fact that how the study was conducted raised alot of questions, like giving the rats in the lab 40 times the normal consumption rate that a person of equal size would consume in a day. As I recalled a person would have to consume pounds of sugar a day for years and they would end up with a health condition.
It ultimately is called personal choice, and something that we as Americans need to get back to, not have the government regulate our lives. No one tells a person you have to go into a fast food place, purchase the food and eat it all of the time. The government ban is going to do alot more harm than good, and the next question should be this: What is next to be banned. Take a good look around your house or community and take a look around, what is next on the chopping block to get regulated or banned cause someone or some flawed study says it is bad for people to consume. I wonder how far till people stop and say wait a minute that is crossing a point.
I say if you are going to ban the fun things in life, go all of the way, lets bring back alcohol, and the other things that people can enjoy, after all do we really want to go back to the 1920's when the black market and criminal organizations flourished because the government decided what is good for us?

yes they are poison, yes I get that part. But with respect to the government telling you what to do, so what. The point here is the government should not be telling us what to eat. Like with the health care, this is just one more step to the government controlling our lives.

While that mode of thinking may be the norm on this site..

Regulation - ie. Financial, medical or even Fatty foods is essential for the well being of the consumer. That is obvious as of late. And the new models that seem to be becoming the global standards are the EU safety models which as many Yanks say are """""""SOCIALIST"""""""".. aren't.

For us, the EU regulates our business safety and health standards for the consumer at a federal level in order to make sure we are safer, healthier and live longer (Which we do in relation to the vast vast majority of the world)... and much of it is also business seeing as the healthier we are, the less social healthcare we will need and the more we can work our 40 hr weeks more productively therefore contributing more to the system, society and family... so its a double whammy.

This doesn't intrude in our day to day lives.. it does intrude in the day to day lives of business's though.. which IMO should prove that their products are safe before selling them to unwitting consumers.

Can't see how that is a police state..

If they were banning you from eating these types of fats.. then that would be a police state.. but they aren't.

I agree that this is indeed a step toward a police state. The idea that our governments either local or national have the gaul to enforce dietary laws on a free people is outrageous. When are we going to stand up and say stop!? I fear that we have already begun the trip down hill into a pit of what will turn out to be a society of prisoners...
