I checked for flash player. Apparently, I have not installed it. When I try to download it, there are multiple options. Which one should I download?

I recommend some of the vintage video game emulators, like snes9x and MAME. That's the whole reason I installed Ubuntu on my PS3

I don't really use my computer for gaming, so I can't make any suggestions about what newer computer games are available for Ubuntu, but I love the old school console games, personally.

You can.

Just download the emulator:

Open a terminal window and type

sudo apt-get install snes9x

(for the super nintendo emulator)

or look for it in the package manager.

Find the rom for the game (which of course you already own, right? ), and load the rom into the emulator. You should also be able to use a generic game controller in Ubuntu.

Everything at psubuntu.com works anywhere you have ubuntu installed.

No, you don't need the physical game. Roms are available to download, just do a google search (ex: 'super mario brothers all stars rom'). There are some copyright issues, like you're supposed to delete the rom after a certain period of time if you don't own the physical copy of the game, but I'm not a lawyer, nor am I advising any illegal activities, just suggesting a hypothetical situation in which one might be able to play vintage video games in Ubuntu.

Portable Ubuntu Remix is an Ubuntu system running as a Windows application.

Ok. Everyone another problem. Today, as I started up ubuntu. I clicked on ubuntu on the dual boot screen, the ubuntu logo came and loaded for some time, and after that instead of getting the brown login screen, the monitor just switched off because it didnt get signal from the cpu. I restarted again, the same thing happened, and I managed to get in the third time. What could be the problem?

Did you made any change to the screen definitions, like resolution and number of colours? That may give some bad results.

As for Flash, I used the ".deb for ubuntu 8.04+" option.

I know that you all are mainly talking about Ubuntu, but have you tried Mint?

I tried Ubuntu on several PCs and found it a little difficult to navigate for an Old Windows guy.

I was then trying out different "Live CD's" and ran across Linux Mint.

I was so immediately impressed with the look and feel I installed it on an old XP machine I had laying around. WOW

It is so very like Windows and everything works immediately. Lots of easy downloads also as well as games and other add ons.

If I did not pay what I did for Vista, I would put it on my XPS Machine.

Anyone else have any experience with Mint?

here's an ubuntu distro that looks very much like the Windows XP we've all grown to love/hate so much.

Infamous Chinese software pirates were not much happy with just copying Windows XP, so they moved their interests to hacking Ubuntu to look like Windows XP. With a Windows XP look-alike we do not mean just a theme or a shell replacement, going by what we experienced, Ylmf OS is a pixel-perfect copycat of Windows XP, but based on Ubuntu Linux.

Cute example, saw it on /. a few days ago. All in Chinese, though. And besides, XP is so Fisher-Price clumsy and annoyingly undeterminable.

Glad to see people picking up Linux; I've used Linux on my primary boxes for several years now. Currently using Gentoo + Compiz + Emerald + Clearlooks, which results in a very fast, productive, robust and clean working environment.

I'm currently (as I type) downloading Mint 8. Laptop is Vista and I plan to run dual mode, for now. I know NOTHING about Linux so I am looking forward to it, but I need the Windows cushion in case I fall on my face (metaphorically speaking.)

Thanks! Though you may be sorry you offered. Geez, what a pain trying to burn that to CD! Up and running though, at the moment off of the CD, but it works! Woot. Too late to play on it though, I'm done... We'll see how it goes tomorrow. Cheers.

Hello Ladyskadi, here is a link to another disk that is very useful if you should ever lose capability to boot your your computer in your conquest to install linux.

Its called Super Grub Disk.It will restore the Windows boot sector or the linux boot sector. All you have to do is burn the image to a cd, boot it and discover its useful tools. Linux boots with Grub the worlds best boot loader.

Just remember grub sees your 1 hard drive as (hd0,0) if you split that in half with gparted to make two hard drives the second will be (hd0,1) the third would be (hd0,2)

Once the system is booted the drives will be /dev/sda1, /dev/sda2, /dev/sda3

you can wee them in your terminal by typing sudo fdisk -l
