China taking over American construction jobs?

Haha....how much more are we as Americans going to take? WOW!

The China State Construction Engineering Corp, the largest contractor in China, recently was awarded a $100 million subway ventilation project in New York's Manhattan area. This contract follows their other two contracts for infrastructure work in the U.S.; the $410 million Alexander-Hamilton Bridge Project also in New York and a $1.7 billion contract to construct a casino resort in Atlantic City, N.J. China, now the prime producer of U.S. manufactured goods is in the process of establishing itself as a major force in construction projects to repair America's infrastructure.

Oh, that's so stupid.
They're going to repair our infrastructure(which can't be taken care of with tax dollars because of the unemployment) by hiring communist chinese?

Of course. He also repealed Glass-Steagall, and signed NAFTA into law. Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same coin. But the blame game in my opinion is over. Bush is gone. Obama is our leader and it's his watch now.

Shame on the US government for not supporting its own workers.

Unfortunately, everything is about money so presumably China put in the lowest quote.

I think it is very shortsighted of the government, because there will be a lot of (expensive) fallout over this.

Kinda ironic we are debating the illegals on the other thread and these Chinese will be legal.

My only hope is that the bid was fair and square and not due to favors we owe the Chinese.

To the OP, I know the Chinese company won the bid. But are they bringing their own workers with them or hiring Americans?

China State Construction Engineering Corp, the largest contractor in China, has bagged a subway ventilation project worth about $100 million in New York's Manhattan area, marking the construction giant's third order in the United States' infrastructure space this year.

The contract was given to China Construction American Co, a subsidiary, the Wall Street Journal quoted a source as saying.

"The new project, along with the $410-million Hamilton Bridge project and a $1.7-billion entertainment project it won earlier this year, signals China State Construction's ambition to tap the American construction market," said Li Zhirui, an industry analyst at First Capital Securities.

Li, however, said the order came as no surprise as the US government is spending massively on infrastructure projects.

The three orders only account for about 4 percent of the value of its total orders this year, Li added.

In the first three quarters of this year, the Chinese construction giant signed more than $2 billion worth of contracts in the US market. China State Construction was also the contractor for a high school, a railway station and the Chinese embassy in the US.

Despite the progress made in the US market, the Middle East, Asia and Africa remain the State builder's key markets. The value of its contracts in Algeria this year increased 32 percent year-on-year, exceeding $800 million, and the value of its contracts in the Middle East surged 62 percent year on year, also exceeding $800 million.

I dont' know but the profits blow back to China and a Chinese company when there are PLENTY of American construction companies in need of profit and capital.

Funny, they will own the job and then hire spanish workers to do it! I see this all the time. It is shocking to me to see so many unemployed and able construction workers in our area, while here at the hotel we currently have 6 crews in house, all spanish workers, all from out of town. One of the companies here is from out of country. All of them use spanish help.

I'm sure that this has alot to do with the fact that a good percentage of America is owned by China, but at the same time I am sure that the workers on this job will mainly be American. I have no option but to see this as life in real time. The same situation has happened in other countries with American contractors. When you owe dept it will get paid one way or another.

American laborers are too expensive. One American construction worker probably costs at least 10 Latinos.

Hiring local companies to do the job is too expensive as well.

It's a lot like what happened to those outsourced jobs to India and other third world countries. Cheap labor always wins over good old quality American labor almost all the time.

Such important points - people if you don't understand Glass-Steagall - please read about it!!!

Also, let's not forget that GW's dad was the ambassador to China under Nixon.

As I said in the other thread about this same subject that cropped up a few weeks ago, the Chinese firm will be employing local workers, so what's the problem?

Local people get jobs, local business benefit from more people in employment and the community develops. Plus the big Chinese firm will have to subcontract out to smaller (local) firms to get the job done. It's all good.

Who cares what big Corporation is running the show, as they'll have to pay taxes to for operating within the US. It's not as if the shareholders of US corporations share their cash with "normies" like you and I anyway.

I think it boils down to the impending loss of "top dog" status and the perceived slap in the face of a foreign company being more successful than an American one. Like you said, no one seemed to mind when it was American corporations doing the reverse!

Also, I wonder if these same people would be up in arms if they know the extent of British ownership of some MAJOR US firms and utilities. Is there a preferred flavour of foreign ownership, because UK firms have had a stake in defence contractors, electricity suppliers and other major companies for quite some years?

they never say who they would hire to do the work...but the corporate profits are going to the chinese mainland...this should not be allowed...period. i wonder who authorized this contract?? how much money was put into his swiss bank account??

Why not? Obviosuly US firms bid too much (probably as a result of always over-estimating Government contracts as they knew they could milk them) and this time drew the short straw. Serves them right.

I'll say it again, but you're aware that VAST amounts of these "corporate profits" you seem to miss so much (did you ever see them anyway?) are off the UK and have been for years? Go see who BAe and National Grid own in the US, just for starters. You'd be surprised.

Anyway, any corp operating in the US must pay US taxes, surely? If not, then that's your own fault for not enforcing it. US and other companies pay tax here in the UK and alot of it. If you're daft enough to allow in foreign companies and allow them to operate totally free from taxes, then I find the situation even more amusing than I did originally!

We need to research whether they are a USA registered contractor.
If they are USA registered corpoartion subject to income tax before profits sent to mainland china.
However, I don't support this in any way shape or form.
Hopefully, this award takes the same fate as the Re-fueling Tanker debacle.
