YOU MADE THE RIGHT MOVE!

WELCOME TO REALITY!

Good luck with your friends and family who are addicted to their TV's.

See now this to me is a rather stupid response. The TV is a tool for information, some of it is rubbish, some of it is quality and simply removing it means you miss out on both. People should be able to watch tv and then check the facts. Not only that but a tv can be used to play games and many games have a real benefit.

Look i read a great deal, from calssics to modern stuff and yet i still have a tv and i still play video games. Is that really so bad?

anyway smartass. if you think that the computer is any less of a brain washing tool then you sir are a moron. took out the tv now toss out the computer. otherwise your just half assing it.

Really? Last time I checked, you can find information online than on television. Online, you have independent news outlets and so on,

what do you have on your TV besides Faux News and MSNBC to get "information" from?

By the way, cool down on the name calling. Thanks.

The negative responses are simply to point out the hypocrisy of the OP. To think the internet doesn't contain the same elements of "brain washing" and propaganda that television does is naive.

I just think it is funny that somebody posted youtube VIDEOS showing people bashing their televisions!

There is also an element of pomposity to it. People love to declare that they don't watch television, only to send a funny youtube VIDEO to your EMAIL.

You've simply replaced your t.v. with a computer. I have no problem with it, but don't go climbing up on your throne to look down on and smirk at all of the "t.v. watchers" when you're still cruising the internet.

I applaud your efforts.

Even though I don't watch TV (DVDs and iPlayer not included
) since theres not much on and I get news off the internet. I still don't think I could get rid of it completely.
I'd miss Doctor who!

Well done you though! We really should be able to function without them. It's just so hard to!

Bravo. Yes, when the gov't made us switch, I never got 'round to it, got used to no tv, and it's gone.

Oh my, I could never get rid of my tv...

As others have said, its a bit silly to claim that the tv is a brainwashing tool. Literally any method of advertising, communicating etc can fall into the catergory of brainwashing. Newspapers, magazines, internet, radio etc. So maybe you should get rid of these other nasty brainwashing tools?

By the way, what size is the tv you've got rid of? Can I have it?

I find this response ridiculous. This person is obviously delusional. He/She checks the facts? What an absurd idiotic thing to say. LOL! It is an attempt to justify his TV watching.

Glad to hear about whatcha did! I personally haven't had a TV in about 5 years or so and I haven't regretted it at all. The clarity of mind you get just gets better and better over time without a TV and I don't miss it one bit.

In fact when I enter someones house and their TV is on and all I hear are commercials and mind-junk it really disgusts me.

So, keep it up and don't look back and you'll find that after years you'll feel even better than you do now! It's great! So keep it up.

Well, most of the things I post really come of as me being an ass, or or at least a spaz . But when i saw this thread actually knew what i wanted to say before i started typing.

I can totally understand the argument with television in general...BUT, i think the Idea of "storytelling" is something that is universal, but we have a knack to give visuals to. I don't think it should be cut out all together, but the material in question SHOULD have a filter.

I cut out all commercials, and the need for cable, other than for a broadband connection. the catch is that i am slightly breaking the law. I use torrents , A way for downloading ANYTHING in the digital format. Movies whole series and all for free. Using torrents as apposed to Limewire, Is a lot safer virus wise as well as not getting caught for file-sharing, just don't seed for too long..But i digress.

I watch all this material on a Terrabit usb hard drive, connected to the USB port of a Standard 80gb PlayStation 3. I do use a computer for the downloads, but the PlayStation does everything else and hooked up to a nice living room HD flat screen. In fact if it was not for all this, I would have never found and watched all the documentaries that are not available in stores, or even hard to find on the net.

It starts to become more of a self influence , instead of listening to media telling you what is good or garbage, you start to pick things you might not have watched before, and you expand your horizons to new things.

Every documentary, movie , and series, i could want is with in reach of my controller, as well as it takes up no room on the shelves, and the media was all free. but with that hitch I brought up before.

total investment: about $1600

500, for the PlayStation, (it was i nice custom box with ps2 compatibility and a suped up cooling system, as well as 500gb on the inside)

120, for the usb terrabit, which stores everything

700 for the flatscreen HD TV

and the rest was on misc. wires

I didn't count for the PC, but you don't need much at all when it comes to that, most people already have what it takes, just keep an eye on disk space.

and that pretty much it, i pay for a cable motem , but i'll never watch TV again, i can still watch Lost and Doctor Who, as well as my William Cooper, and Jose Escamilla docs.

So if you wanna break away from your local media, This works for me, and I feel most of the things I watch now always seem to lean more toward the subjects usually presented on this website .

I've turned a lot of friends on to this , and they will never look back.
If your willing to take the slight risk, and willing to learn a few new things on your computer, this is the best way to cut out all the crazy media influence, and just get down to watching what interests you.

to remove 42" LCD from my room? No!

What about Discovery channel and Sponge Bob Square Pants? I love them.

Btw, i hope your family would be ok with your move.
The thing is you only choose what kind of program you want to watch. Not all.
Just for your entertainment only.

Why didn't you just switch it off, or change channel to a more educational programme instead? That way you avoid the brainwashing if you treat it as a tool rather than the TV being the one in control.

Alternatively, throwing it out will achieve the same objective, but you will miss out anything that may be useful.

Same here man.... those commercials are god damn brainwashers that's for sure

I recently stopped paying my TV License as i only watched 4 or 5 programs on it.... CSI, CSI MIAMI, CSY NY, SPOOKS, 24.... I STILL WATCH THEM but only on the Internet now where there's no commercials!!!

And i watch Films when i can....

I try not to watch the news when i do switch on the TV but i always find myself watching 5 mins of the headlines but yeh like others i've managed to stop it from controlling me.

Does anyone else notice the things in common with the TV series i watch?

Also notice the word 'Programme' ha! ha! Programmed is the verb.... to be programmed
but seriously though what i watch is good stuff especially 24.... all out action from the off

Edit: I forgot to add that if any commercials come on while i'm watching something i turn the volumn down on them
I have also stopped listening to the stereo as that has the same effect!!

Absolutely, addictive danger on the Internet too, thanks for pointing this out....but at this time, it's the rote "programming"...daily feed... that is missing from the Internet. At this time, the tv is akin to the auto daily delivery of the local city paper (do without this too). This is not to say that no tv or big-city newspaper is a good or desirable choice for you...just a good chat going on here.

Dude, I am very much anti-television and refuse to own one myself. My friends constantly question my lack of television choices, but I am quite comfortable with my stance on the subject. I won't lie, there are a few television shows that I follow, but nothing worth justifying buying and spending obscene amounts of time in front of a television. I'm much more of a reader anyways.

People do realise that no adverts would equal no tv, right? Even if you watch programs on the internet you're still exposed to banners, pop-ups and sometimes adverts that you cant skip just before the program comes on.
In fact, if you're watching something on the internet you're probably exposed to more advertising than on a tv. Some sites you have to sign up to watch programs, so you're opening yourself up to hideous direct mail, and possibly having your details passed onto other companies. Plus you have to click through various pages to even get to the thing you're wanting to watch.

At least if you're watching a TV you have the option to mute the tv and leave the room while the adverts are on.

On the whole though, I could understand how tv & adverts could be seen as brainwashing, because there's so much psychology that goes into the whole thing. But, advertising also has very strict regulations so if there was something on that could be deemed as brainwashing then maybe it should be taken up with the ASA.

*Edit - people seem not to like having about 500+ channels that they'll never watch, why is this? If you ever flick through them there's some absolute comedy gold out there! There's nothing like flicking on the gospel channel and listening to reverend mooshakalacka ranting & raving to a packed room about how if you watch porn then its likely that your children will grow up to be sexual deviants.

Good for you!

I got rid of my television almost 6 years ago, and I haven't had the urge to watch any since.

The first thing that you will notice, is if you are over at a friends house, there will be a conversation going on, and someone will turn on the television.

All conversation will stop, and the people will turn to the Television like zombies.

When you are a current watcher of television, you never notice it... but after being "Detoxed" from it's effects, you will notice it in a BIG way.

The first time I saw it, I got freaked out, and reaffirmed my VOW to never watch television again.

I would suggest that ALL people take at least a 2 week hiatus from television just so they can become accustomed to seeing its effects on others.

It really is a sight to behold.

Dude
What if something good comes on TV?. Listen Bro, you may find you need to toss the computer also, it's worse then the TV. And to much ATS "will" send you over the edge.

I'm just kidding brother, I know, CNN drives me nuts
