President Hugo Chavez launched a federal police force on Sunday that he hopes will change the overwhelmingly negative image most Venezuelans have of their public security forces while reducing crime in one of Latin America's most violent countries.

The 950-agent force will initially operate in the capital's most crime-ridden neighborhoods, but the government plans to boost the number of officers to 6,000 and extend its reach beyond Caracas by the end of next year.

Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said the nascent police force would seek to reduce crime through preventative rather than repressive measures and embrace the socialist ideals of Chavez's "Bolivarian Revolution," a political movement named after 19th-century independence hero Simon Bolivar.

"The National Police will impose a culture of peace in the barrios to eliminate the violence of the capitalist, bourgeois model that we've inherited," El Aissami said.

I can't help but read this and think of Hitler's SS forces, which swore allegiance not to Germany, but Hitler alone.

I suppose I have two questions from this article:
1. How quickly before such a special police force attacks/kills/jails political opponents of Chavez?
2. How long before such special police forces can be found within the US?

I agree. It looks like the obvious next step to tyranny along with suspending civil rights and throwing out constitutional government. A new Nazi Germany arising in SA.

Blackwater could certainly fit the mold, although I see them more as a private contractor that provides police/security services. Under their current structure, they're more military aren't they? ( I ask, because I genuinely don't know how they operate today.)

With unemployment being as high as it is, it seems quite probable that the US government could, one day, create a similar police force that answers directly to the President of the United States, and is compensated nicely. A federal job, with good salary and benefits, who wouldn't want this job...better than no job at all.

And, we've all heard about the "civilian national army" that is said to be just as strong, just as powerful as the US military.

This will just turn into another corrupt police force like all the other countries like Cuba. Russia.

Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely,

This will be a absolute power and the officers in this force will be able to do anything they want.

Give it a year and they will be lining there pockets till the government collapses
from there greed.

I dnt' know why people have a problem with Chavez.

He's brought that country back from so much, kicked the big oil companies out.

They are the ONLY country that doesn't import oil. Do you have any idea how significant that is?

As far as I am concerned Hugo does a better job of running the country than our politicians do. At least he gets crap done.

It only takes Congress twenty minutes to decide whether or not to build a fence on the boarder, and then 20 years to pick which color to paint it.
