Al Franken Objects to Joe Lieberman Speaking in Senate, Defies Senate Tradition, Makes a Complete ASS of Himself

Junior Senator Franken Tries to Silence Senior Senator Lieberman

Sen. Joe Lieberman just wanted an "additional moment" on the floor Thursday to finish his speech about health care. But when he asked for unanimous consent to finish his remarks, Democratic Sen. Al Franken wouldn't let him.

"In my capacity as the senator from Minnesota, I object," said Franken, who shrugged his shoulders as he was presiding over the Senate.

"Really?" Lieberman asked, flashing a grin. "Don't take it personally," as he was granted consent to include the rest of his remarks in the congressional record.

Franken didn't take it personally, leadership aides and his office said. Both said that the leadership is strictly enforcing a 10-minute speaking rule, an unusual move that is irking long-winded senators. Jim Manley, a spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, said the objection was not directed at Lieberman, who is the source of liberal ire for his position on the health care bill.

Senator John McCain was boiling mad and immediately came to Lieberman's defense, rebuking junior Senator Franken on the spot, saying that in his 24 years in the Senate he had never seen a Senator denied his request for one more minute. "I don't know what's happening in this body," said McCain, "but it's wrong."

What's going on in the Senate, Mr. McCain, is called a socialist snow job.

Looking at your list I am wondering what they are basing it on. I lived in France for three years and I would not rate their health care better than the US. France is also on the path of an unsustainable cost for their medical system. Cuba has extremely bad health care and they are just below the US on the list. I also see many of the top countries as small populations too and I wonder if that skews the numbers in their favor.

Whether it is true or not it is a recurring statement that countries with socialized medicine have issues with how much time it takes to see a doctor and have long waiting lists for all surgeries except for life or death situations. Also the cost to the state seems to have a breaking point for most if not all of these countries, for you can only tax so much.

For America, which is not one big country, but 50 United States, we continually fail to remember that America is like 50 countries united under one federal government. This is where we differ from the whole world where a socialized system might work someplace else, but would minimize the power of the State. If a State voted in socialized medicine and the people of that state were willing to pay for it with state taxes then they get what they want and pay for, but why should let’s say the state of Washington pay in federal taxes for the healthcare of those in New York?

There is something wonderful when you have the ability to live in the state that you agree with, and this means I can live in a state that has a more socialized system, or one that has the death penalty, or loose gun laws, or even one that is very conservative with a small government foot print, and though it bothers me to see someone in office that is less capable than me, I must say power to Minn if they want Franken to represent them. When we create a large federal foot print then people will lose their ability to choose the life they want to live, and that will be very bad for America, and really not what our forefathers ever intended. We the people, of the United States of America want to stay as a United State.

Don't give me that mindless Bush-bashing drivel... THINK. Tell the TRUTH.

The Clinton Administration, with its de-funding of the military, its collaborations with enemy governments (Iran, China, North Korea), its repeated security breeches, its technology "giveaways" to enemy nations, its accepting campaign money from enemy intelligence agencies, its declaring war on "domestic terrorists" (i.e. American citizens), it's deploying more American military forces on more futile missions than any president in history, its launching missile strikes on Iraq and the Sudan without consulting the United Nations Security Council... et cetera, et cetera.....

Baby, I can list 16 volumes of crimes committed by Bill Clinton's administration — including international terrorism — and never even mention sexual indiscretions or blue dresses. Sexual indiscretion was nothing, it was a throwaway. Forget it.

Bill Clinton and Al Gore were ripping the United States completely apart long before GWBush came loping along. Bush was a clown, but he did one thing Clinton never did — he kept terrorism out of the USA for 7 years.

Yeah, Bush was a minor player in the history of America's destruction compared to Bill Clinton and his arm-twister Al Gore. You need to go back for a refresher history course, chum.

Where do you get your info? Votes showing up in cars! C'mon. If you read earlier posts you will see that it has been shown that someone earlier in the day had his extra time turned down.So it does happen. Franken was just following the laws.

I do find it fishy in a state with such a small population to have such a big swing in the votes on a recount. Was the first count done by totally inept people across the whole state?

What that list does not tell you is that most of the nations shown are tiny, tiny little nations compared to the USA. I mean, Norway has a total population of 8 million. Malta has like 4 million, Singapore is 4 million, France is like 30 million, Canada is about 30 million..... etc

The USA is 300 million people. Socialist healthcare programs that work on tiny little countries don't work on giant populations. Such programs start collapsing around the 30 million ceiling, and they go flat-out bankrupt when they hit the 130 million ceiling (as with Japan).

In other words, you can't stretch a pathetic socialist healthcare system over a population of 300 million.

It's unsustainable.

I kind of agree with you there Doc. I'm not sure Canada's good health care system would work on a pop. of 300 million. I don't know if it could be sustained. Maybe if America cut back on some wars. Might free up some money.

It's very hard for me to not want to laugh as hard as I can when I read your posts Doc. You do not back up any of your claims, and you're being pretty pompous about it too which is really close to crossing the line in to personal attack territory.

I'd just like to know, since you claim to know better than Canadians, how you came about this revelation of information? At least stop being an ass and provide details such as where you were and when you visited so people can make their own judgments by doing independent research. Or better yet, provide some links since you seem to be inept at doing so or just too darn lazy after creating such "awesome" stories! Yeah, cool story, bro!

It's really sick to think that you don't want healthcare to be available to all. LIFE is a right! NOT a luxury! Healthcare sustains life and in such IS a right! Any other option goes against my universal right to life as an American.

Doc, for someone that is on a board to help deny ignorance, your avatar speaks volumes. Ignorance denied, and ignored.

As an Aussie and an interested and objective observer of US politics I must say that after 8 years of the Republican Bush administration, that is the most hypocritical and hilarious statement I have seen in a long time!!!

Still laughing,

Yeah - becaues it was democrats who:

1. Shouted down all the townhall discussion on health care so debate could not take place
2. Kept interrupting with 100 objections during the House debate to silence opponents
3. Referring to anyone who criticized the war as a traitor who hate our troops
4. Made the assertion that you either endorse US foreign policy or be no better than a terrorist
5. Continue to try to silence critics by making allegations of communism

OH WAIT! All those things were done by hypocritical idiots of the GOP. If you cared about the debt, then you would have said something about the $3 trillion blown in Iraq for an unprovoked war that has cost 100s of thousands of lives.

The problem with that argument, aside from the fact that you have no evidence to support your assertion, is the fact that the bill is not establishing single-payer universal healthcare or government ownership of hospitals. The Bill creates a public option that will be financed by consumers choosing it and paying for just as they would a private insurance plan. This system is meant to be self-sustaining, i.e., not sustained by tax dollars outside of low income subsidies.

Yeah, Bush was a minor player in the history of America's destruction compared to Bill Clinton and his arm-twister Al Gore.

Are you seriously trying to say that the trillion dollar Iraq war that was sold to the American people as an outright and blatant lie is minor?

Bush, Gore, Clinton, Obama the differences are cosmetic only. They are all the exact same. ,

Since Barack Obama has come into office the only tax increase that has actually been signed into law is the cigarette tax increase, which I personally don't have a problem with. Taxing consumption items is a good idea in my opinion, but back to my point.

So little has changed since Obama has come into office that we might as well still have GWBush as president. Obama has passed his budget, which is bigger than Bush's budget, but Bush signed off on the TARP and the TALF. The bailout that people blame on Obama was signed by Bush.

When Bush came into office we had a surplus which was immediately returned, which is not a bad idea, but the majority of the money went to large international corporations. And to fund the Iraq war, the money that was put aside for the trust that was supposed to be for every single taxpayers retirement was put into treasuries. He robbed us of our supposed "retirement" and then robbed us of whatever was left with the TARP and the TALF.

And the last statement is pure garbage.
I am actually shocked that you would even have the cojones to say it.
Are you really trying to say that GWBush kept this country safe, because the last 7 years he was in office we didn't have a "terrorist attack"?

Did you forget about the supposed "terrorist attack" that happened on 9/11?

Under GWBush this occurred:

1) Habeas Corpus repealed due to the PATRIOT ACT. Do you realize that the idea of habeas corpus dates back to the Magna Carta? That's 800 years dude.

2) Posse Commitatus repealed. So not only can we, as in American citizens, be held indefinitely and not given any trial, but now the Federal Government can use it's own troops against it's own citizens.

3) The Iraq War trillion Dollar LIE. Blatant, Bold, and nothing but a direct lie.
Are you actually saying that this stuff is minor?

4) He inherited a surplus and left us with a recession/depression and an unserviceable debt. He spent our retirement on a war for a lie, and his economic policies allowed for the biggest transfer of wealth in the history of this country.

5) He made people so angry that they actually bought Obama's lies. Obama got elected because he was the most unlike GWBush.

6) 9/11 and the resulting complete and total lie and debacle concerning the cover up.

7) Did your forget about Scooter Libby? He outed a CIA agent for political gain and then lied to the grand jury about it. This was all to cover up the lie that is the Iraq War. Yes, Clinton lied too and Clinton is a POS, but that in no way excuses the actions of GWBush and his cabinet concerning Valerie Plame.

8) The largest expansion of the Federal Government in the history of the Federal Government. How in the world is that conservative. GWBush is as much a socialist as Obama. Look at what I have presented to you. How can you refute that? Because he lowered taxes? So what, inflation increased dramatically under Bush, which is actually worse than raising taxes.

Doc... You need to stop watching the television and read a book sometime. I wouldn't be so quick to tell people to study history, because you obviously have no idea what you are talking about.

I mean you HAVE NO IDEA what you are talking about.

Being neither Democratic or Republican I have always liked Al. He cares about the average Joe and is sickened by the rich getting richer. I'm sorry, but I wish we had more people who cared about the people and spending as the Senator from Minnesota does. As far as the Minnesota people, I think they are very happy with him. I haven't spoken to any who dislikes him yet... unless they were Republican, of course.
I like his fire and I like his love of the country. Love him or hate him, he makes people think and be held accountable for their actions.

He is smarter than most people BECAUSE he is a comedian, not in spite of it; smarter than most senators and definitely smarter than most of us including myself. He was under orders to keep it at 10 minutes just like lieberman was but he doesnt follow orders.

EDIT: wow, Doc is getting ripped apart and its about time. I have nothing else to add so i will just watch the dismemberment ensue.
