John Stewart or anybody else can look for motives or 'spins', but until someone actually addresses the points that Glenn Beck brings forward on a weekly basis, it's all moot.

I'm still waiting for someone to prove that his points are wrong. As he says, "call me". lol

I actually watch Glenn Beck. I would actually like to see him provide actual evidence. Most of what he says is simply what he feels. That isn't evidence and it makes it difficult to actually prove it wrong because there is no way to fact check that. It is like if I said right now I'm wearing a green shirt. There is no way you can say it is right or wrong. For all you know I could be in a blue shirt or no shirt.

Watch him again, he brings speculation as to the wants and desires of the people in charge. He says that Obama wants socialism yet he really can't prove that. He can point at events and make assumptions as to how HE interprets those events that doesn't make it so. Even fox news has released statements that the network doesn't consider Beck "News" they are opinions.

If I was wearing a green shirt and you were color blind you will look at the shirt and say it could be red. Is it? No.

Could one of the ATS specialists in language please help elucidate the meanings of the concepts of 'think,' 'fool,' and 'good?'

Thank you in advance for the explanation-- even though english is my first language, the quoted statement just doesn't make but an iota of sense to me,

he he

I can't get enough of these people attempting to discredit Stewart and Colbert.

Are their shows on Comedy Central? Yes. Are their shows comedy? Yes. Has comedy ever been used to illustrate legitimate points regarding politics? YES!!!!

Their shows have the ability to hit closer to home BECAUSE they do it under the guise of comedy! Has anyone ever noticed how the news channels LOVE to take a shot at these guys, whenever they can?? They don't want you to take what they say seriously.. I wonder why? And actually I don't propose you take the poop jokes or whatever seriously... but if you think Stewart and Colbert aren't making valid points in their shows, you're fooling only yourself.

When all these Fox News proponents are up to the intellectual level of a Daily Show/Colbert Report viewer... I'll start taking what you guys say seriously:

So what's it say about our news channels when the viewers of Stewart/Colbert are more in touch with reality??? Hmmm.. go ahead guys, defend Fox News

LOL... I used to watch the Daily Show with J.S. way back before he got political, and he was really funny, but now he is just a leftist mouth piece... he doesn't even write his own material! His material is written by some chick who could be considered a female Michael Moore. If J.S. were to ever write his own material, the show would fail with in a week.

2 or 3 years ago he came to my college to do stand-up. I went to see him, because I KNEW he was a comedian before, and he USED to be funny on the Daily Show. OMFG! You could hear crickets in the aud. He was horrible, no that his jokes were bad, he just wasn't funny... and my college is ultra Lib! People coming out of the aud. were like, "WOW he was HORRIBLE" "What happened, he was funny on the Daily Show". I've even seen some of his old stand up recently, and seriously, he was never really funny.

Yes, but he is a pu$$y, he is no different that Michael Moore or Rush, but when he get called out on his lib views, he hides behind his excuse of being a comedian... WAH WAH I'm just a comedian doing satirical political comedy WAH WAH. Come on man, own up! Come out and say it! "I'm a liberal Jew hating Jew! I'm a mouth piece of the extreme left! I want the Palestinians to kill my people and "drive them into the sea". I make up news because I know my mush brained sheeple will believe everything I say" DO IT!! I will have more respect for him when he owns up to what he really is

So what's it say about our news channels when the viewers of Stewart/Colbert are more in touch with reality??? Hmmm.. go ahead guys, defend Fox News

Well, they are in touch with their OWN reality, not ours. It's pretty bad when even CNN is taking shots at J.S. The problem is that people actually believe what he is delivering IS real news, when it is nothing more than out of context, cut-and-paste, one-sided, pseudo-news. He even admitted, not jokingly either, that he wants people to believe his version of the news over other channels even though his news is really real.

For those of you who hate it people pick on poor J.S. there are 2 schools of thought...

#1 He really isn't as funny as he thinks he is.

#2 Don't pass off your liberal bilge as just comedy, just own up to it, you might get a bigger audience.

Lastly, regarding Beck, at least he does research on his topics, uses facts, admits what side of the fence he is on and doesn't hide behind any excuses (wah wah... I'm just a talk show host). You might not like what he has to say politically, but at least he is honest and truthful.

That's a tough thing to do, as we've seen. We will all need to do our own research and use our own critical thinking to make our own conclusions. He raises some points and adds his opinions. That's about it. Now we can form our opinions about what he brings up, if we listen and/or care.

If nothing else, I respect that fact that he doesn't plod along with the rest of the mainstream media. He's got a set of balls and is willing to say what's on his mind in front of everybody.

The Daily Show has ALWAYS been angled towards political humor. And by the way, J.S. ad libbed his way through the writer's strike and there was no drop off in ratings and it was one of the only shows (along with Colbert Report) to stay on the air.

His material is written by some chick who could be considered a female Michael Moore.

I just had to quote this again because I don't know if you're being disingenuous or if you're just ignorant... so here's a complete list of current writers for the Daily Show:

Head Writer: Steve Bodow
Staff Writers: Jon Stewart, Rory Albanese, Kevin Bleyer, Rich Blomquist, Tim Carvell, Wyatt Cenac, J. R. Havlan, Hallie Haglund, David Javerbaum, Josh Lieb, Sam Means, Jo Miller, John Oliver, Daniel Radosh, Jason Ross

So, are you sure you have a clue who writes what? Apparently not.

2 or 3 years ago he came to my college to do stand-up. I went to see him, because I KNEW he was a comedian before, and he USED to be funny on the Daily Show. OMFG! You could hear crickets in the aud. Thanks for your opinion. It doesn't agree with my opinion. So who's right? Really, you mean opinions are useless in debate? Darn.

Yes, but he is a pu$$y

lol.. Really, that's your retort? He's a pussy? I'm starting to regret responding to you... But I do want to say THANK YOU for having the maturity to admit YES, even though you think he's a pussy, comedy raises legitimate points about the state of politics.

Well, they are in touch with their OWN reality, not ours.

Well when the survey included simple questions like who are the heads of state of what country, I start to question what your reality is and who is this "ours" you speak of. Does your reality not include heads of state?

It's pretty bad when even CNN is taking shots at J.S.

CNN got their collective butts handed to them by Jon in this interview on Crossfire and I think you might see why CNN doesn't like him anymore (or carry his show)... This is Jon Stewart sans teleprompter, this is Jon Stewart politically uncut so why don't you critique this video and point out to me the extreme left mouth piece bullcrap 'cause I apparently missed it while he was busy trashing the entire system....

It's a shame that the Daily Show and Colbert Report are so over your head. No one ever said you should tune out any and all news sources except Stewart/Colbert, in fact, if you did that then their shows wouldn't make sense because the news is their material. Ignore them, dismiss them, I don't care... it's proven that their viewers are more intelligent than someone who swallows what Faux News or MSNBC or CNN tells you as gospel. I suggest you do what I do and watch them all and accept each for what they are.

Faux airs dirty laundry on the left, MSNBC / CNN airs dirty laundry on the right, Stewart/Colbert airs dirty laundry on them all.

All we've established is that you don't like Jon Stewart, you admit comedy raises legitimate points about politics, and Stewart/Colbert viewers know more about the world than any other "actual" news source.

Thanks for playing.

Very sorry about double posting but for all those defending Beck and saying he's fair and calls it like it is and whatever else...

Even Faux News themselves don't dare call what he does "news" ...

Fox News Senior Vice President Michael Clemente struck back at the White House after Dunn's remark saying, "It's astounding the White House cannot distinguish between news and opinion programming. It seems self-serving on their part." ... Fox went on to define its news hours as 9am-4pm & 6-8pm, parameters which exclude Cavuto, O'Reilly, Fox & Friends crew, Glenn Beck, Greta Van Susteren, and Sean Hannity from the news category...

www.huffingtonpost.com...

^^^^ Source which includes a video of Jon Stewart making sure people know what Fox News execs says about their "anchors"...

A blurb from the video if you don't feel like going to the link and watching what Stewart has to say about it...

It's your [the administration] job to *bleep* up power, it's Fox's job to *bleep* up truth.

I don't give a flying fart-sickle who the messenger is, the message is dead on... even according to Fox News execs.

Forget going to the Execs for the down - low on Beck, why not just look at Beck himself?

Beck has been fake crying for years. It started on his radio show in Tampa, Fla., where he first turned the confessional mode of the support-circle into fodder for self-denigrating humor and ratings gold. After 10 years, the fake crying is best seen as a corporate brand handle. It differentiates him from tough-guy competitors in a conservative media universe dominated by manly men and manlier women. Even Beck himself is becoming increasingly open about this. The plug for his upcoming "Common Sense" comedy tour describes him as "America's favorite hysterical, fear-mongering, TV and radio crybaby."

Mercury Radio Arts. Therein lies everything you need to know about Fox's new megastar.

Mercury Radio Arts is Beck's production company. It is his pride, his joy, and his multiteat cash cow. The company, whose tag line is "The fusion of entertainment and enlightenment," produces or co-produces his radio and television shows, his live events and his many publishing and digital media projects, all of which promote and expand the Beck brand.

Its full-time staff of 20 is not based in the small-town "Real America" Beck claims to hold so dear, but in the cynical media capital of the world, Manhattan.

full article: www.alternet.org...

I'm not even going out on a limb and saying Stewart/Colbert are out there doing it out of their love and compassion for the American people and they're exempt from the "talking head syndrome" that plagues every facet of American media. I'm just pointing out that Glenn Beck is as guilty, and more guilty than most, of this. To think what he cries about on his show is genuine... well, no offense but if you believe that you're bat crap crazy.

Thanks for the one liner but I was responding in general to those defending what Beck stands for (which is money) and more directly to this quote from menjo...

You might not like what he has to say politically, but at least he is honest and truthful.

He isn't out there for honesty and truth, he is playing to the majority of the country for money... and by god, these people are scared crapless and he's got their attention. In large part due to Beck and buddies fear mongering every single day.

As an aside, why does Faux News come on every single night talking about "MAIN STREAM media" doing this and that and how their audience is being ignored by said "MAIN STREAM media" ... when Faux News has more viewers than any other news media? lol There is NO "news" MORE "main stream" than Faux News!

Wait, so Glenn Beck does what he does for money, and Jon Stuart.... Doesn't?

Both claim that "they're not journalists"; one claims hes a "comedian"and the other says hes "just a guy".

Both have a point of view, both play fast and loose with the facts when it serves their needs, both are making damn good money doing so.

Whats the issue?

Jon Stewart isn't near the money whore that Glenn Beck is, no. Does he perform a job to get paid? Sure he does. But he hasn't attempted to build an empire on it and exploit a scared populace.

Stewart operates from a position of struggling through the every day bullcrap by laughing at the absurdity of it all, while Beck contributes to the absurd.

Beck is what Stewart laughs about.

Alright so now I know Stewart's motivation is to make you laugh... and if you knew anything about Jon Stewart you would actually know that is his PASSION, to make people laugh. Stewart didn't start a corporation while rallying against them on a TV show to peddle his goods... Beck, however, did. That's the issue.

If Beck is "just a guy", then what's his inspiration? Money.

Stewart's inspiration is laughter and what makes him special, IMO, is that he not only makes you laugh (doing what he enjoys) but he does it by educating you about the shenanigans our government / "news" programs.

Stewart operates from a position of struggling through the every day bullcrap by laughing at the absurdity of it all, while Beck contributes to the absurd.

Andbeck cries at the absurdity of it all. Still not seeing a difference.

Beck seems pretty passionate to me.

And?

So beck is a money grubbing capitalist running dog and Stuart is a ...what, a saint of comedy?

Seems to me there's no real difference except that Beck is better at leveraging his viewership into profits, and of course the POV of their respective fans.

Alright, to you it just doesn't seem like a big deal but to me it's a huge difference.

Beck is passionate about MONEY. Beck preys on the Faux News viewership, predominantly white and middle class, for their money. Stewart preys on his viewership for laughs.

It is the pursuit of money that bothers me. It's the WAY he pursues his money that bothers me. I wouldn't respect a crack dealer if he was pursuing money by selling crack coc aine to 14 year olds. Money is not the end all be all in this world and the strong desire to pursue money surely isn't acceptable if you defend it under the veil of "capitalism."

When ANY topic comes up where someone stands to gain money... their cause is justly picked over with a fine tooth comb. Beck is no different.

Anyone that stands to gain that much money on your fear, you have to question if the reasons they're scaring the begeezus out of you are legitimate.

If you want to say he's just a darn good capitalist, fine. You're right, he is. However, I don't judge a person based on their fiscal philosophy alone. I guess if you remove morality from the equation, The Fed and their buddies working on Wall St. are some grade A+ capitalists as well with all that derivative market tom foolery. Being skilled in making money doesn't make you a good person and it doesn't make your message just... it just makes you a business man. If your particular skill set used to get you that money is fear mongering, telling gullible tall tales... well, that's when I start to lose respect. Just like I lost any respect for Wall St. when they collapsed the economy, NOT TO THE DETRIMENT OF THEMSELVES, but to the detriment of the people that actually keep the country moving... in the ruthless pursuit of money.

So when I see people defending Beck as this champion of truth and enlightenment, I see people falling for a money making scheme.

And yes this is a difference between Beck and Stewart. Stewart is employed by Viacom, he already got paid when you bought your cable service. Beck stands to gain more and more and more the more and more and more you're scared into supporting him. That is the difference.

It's obvious to me we don't share the same opinions and I've tried to make it clear why I feel that way about mine. It's all I can do, and I've got nothing else to add to the thread.
