Here's a conversation me and a friend had online...it's quite thought provoking and a little humorous so I thought I'd post it...

CHAOS says:
"Just as a 3D object produces a 2D shadow, a 4D object will produce a 3D shadow"
That'd be trippy...
Neo D. says:
... ... ... um... but a 2d object doesn't produce a 1D shadow...
1D being supposedly just a line...
Though even technically that has height and width...
Dude... did I tell you bout the douche's in year 6 who tried calling me an idiot after they asked me if a piece of paper was 3D and I said it was...
CHAOS says:
Haha...
No...
That's fair funny...trying to make a fool of you when in fact they were the fools...
Neo D. says:
I think they thought because teachers would say "A picture on paper is 2D. A box is 3D."
CHAOS says:
They were thinking as though the paper had no thickness...
Neo D. says:
Basically...
CHAOS says:
Would such a piece of paper make a 1D shadow if held to the sun on the right angle?
You'd get no shadow...it's infinitely thin...
Neo D. says:
Exactly...
There is no 1D...
Technically...
CHAOS says:
Yeah...
So it does technically create a 1D shadow...nothing...
Neo D. says:
Incorrect...
Because 1D is height OR length...
Since it creates nothing... it's 0D...
CHAOS says:
Yeah...but picture something with only height and no width or depth...it would look like...nothing...
Neo D. says:
Incorrect... because the reality becomes that it has no height...
Without width, it cannot have height...
CHAOS says:
Same goes with 2D dude...
How can something have width and height but no depth...an infinitely thin piece of paper?!?! Same thing/concept your talking of...
Neo D. says:
Easy...
CHAOS says:
It's still exactly the same concept though...it essentially becomes nothing as you say...
Neo D. says:
So we... if there is a forth dimension... we are nothing?!?
Oh !@#$...
We're nothing...
We're nothing...
CHAOS says:
Haha...
Neo D. says:
*pulls out a gun* I am nothing... nothing... nothing...
CHAOS says:
lol...
Neo D. says:
*shoots a TV* Thank you... thank you very much...
... ... ... all better...

The thing about the 3D shadows was a quote from a video I was watching which was trying to explain the different dimensions...and that got the convo started...just to make it clear...

I tend to visually imagine dimensions as balloons within balloons, each dimension exists on the surface of a balloon, the more balloons the higher the dimension.
Lets say we exist on the 4th balloon, we see the other 3 balloons/dimension but can't see/control the 4th. If you were to touch the 3rd balloon, someone living on that surface would only see in it their dimension, your finger tip would just be a 2D blob on the surface, you could place your finger tip anywhere on the balloon within seconds but in the 2D perspective their balloon is infinate.
Thats how I try to visualise higher dimesions than ours.
