But crabs and shells have been cohabitating for a long time. A coconut is not a natural part of an octopus environment. In a short time, the octopus has learned to use something that is not a natural part of its environment.

They are incredible critters.

They are supposed to be the most intelligent invertebrates around and their brain is integrated into their body instead of one solid mass. They are definitely clever!

I will say this is significant and unfortunately this puts us in a state of disagreement. They snatch coconuts and then reassemble them into a shelter. That is far more effort than a hermit crab puts in.
