Seems the no trolling/ baiting policy is a goner!
Here's what it says:
1g.) Political Baiting: You will not engage in politically-charged rhetoric, politically-inspired name-calling, and related right-versus-left political bickering while posting in any topical forum or discussion thread on AboveTopSecret.com. You will not alter political candidate names or party affiliations in order to insult or deride the opposition.

I love a heated debate, arguments even. while i don't want this site to become namby pamby, aren't there some current threads ( ahem) that clearly violate stated ATS policy? It's their website, and they can do what they want, but why make rules then ignore them?
It's not about ideas or opinions, it's about choice of language and decorum.
Ideas can be presented in a civil manner IF the poster chooses to do so, and the site mods enforce their own responsibilities. If this site degenerates into just nasty bickering ( like most other sites), then it becomes absolutly worthless in my opinion.
So, what the deal ATS?
And what are your thoughts members?

You are right. There has been a lot of "baiting" lately. First thread I saw this morning said "Progressives are communists", something like that. It was created by Hotdog or hothead or something like that. Now if that thread is not political baiting I surely don't know what is.

With all due respect to the site mods and owners ( and I do respect you), this seems to an issue of quality.
If the idea is simply to generate traffic for the site ( making money), so be it. Ok by me.
But if they still care about quality, then........maybe a review is in order.

Not to defend some of these posters but I suspect a lot are simply playing the devil's advocate here. I do however think they are sinking into the mire of sensationalism to make their points.

Have you noticed how well the decisive thread title get people going? I've actually contemplated starting a thread like it just to shore up some points (this is a joke, but I'm beginning ti suspect their reasons).

If ATS simply becomes a contest to get flags and stars, then it's a complete waste of time, and the opposite of what it's supposed to be.
I personally, post only when I have something to say, not just to hear myself talk and seek fame and glory via the internet( Yes, some sad souls ACTUALLY seek that!) Weird huh?

personally - i believe a lot of what is perceived to be baiting is nothing more than thin skin on the part of the reader.

"Progressives are Communists"

Well, maybe in that persons world, they are. If his or her post contains many reasons why they believe so - then i think it has merit to be on ATS.

Is it true? Well, obviously not to you - but if we applied that line of thinking to ATS - then there'd be a million or so posts that wouldnt be allowed since they cannot be proven...or because someone else disagrees or is offended.

If the post was just a 3 sentence "I HATE LIBERALS..........YOU GUYS SUCK" then yes, i believe you have a point. And to that point - i believe the Mods do a very good job of enforcing the policies.

Please read my original post.
It's not about ideas, it's about language.
It has NOTHING to do with content, it has to do with the way that content is presented.

Currently there are 16 mods on. At least that's what the board page says. We can't be everywhere and see every post as they are posted. That's what the Complains/Suggestions button is for.

I agree with intrepid on this. If you have a problem with a thread, click the ALERT button or fill out the Complaints form. Mods don't have a magic all seeing eye to catch these things. Alert them so they can see the problems

I'm not really blaming the mods, I certainly realize that they can't be everywhere. I made an alert button press once but immediately afterward I thought that maybe I was overreacting and since then I tend to wait so I don't complain over a kneejerk reaction.

I have been here quite awhile, a lot longer than this account shows and I remember bragging to nonusers how serious ATS was about policing the board and the no nonsense way violations were handled. Again I am not blaming the mods, I just think the tolerence level has risen dramaticly.

I think this is probably true in many cases. I'd go one step further and suggest that it's not "playing the devils advocate" for the sake of trying to present another point of view, but because it's already known that the point of view is going to create shock value and gain attention. Bottom line, it's baiting for attention...

Having said that, I need to clarify that I'm not saying that I believe threads, opinions, etc. that are known to create shock value, shouldn't be presented. I do not mean that.

I'm simply saying that if a thread is started as a rant, or as a plug, with no apparent value or contribution (i.e. seeking to educate, to present a problem and alternative solutions, etc.) than it's relegated to "rant" status IMO and I do my best to avoid paying it the dues it's seeking.

There have been many instances in which a "rant" or attention seeking thread has sparked some interesting "side conversations" and the thread has turned into something else... and that sometimes makes these threads worthwhile...

Ok Ok.
I'm not the type to be reporting threads, the only time i have was a destructive one aimed at ME personally. I would report a threat of violence.
I'm not ctiticizing mods or site management, but I do think things are slipping.

The following are posts I personally think should have been removed for baiting, attention grabbing, star and flag farming...

Does anyone else hate the way obama pronounces pakistan

"Liberals" the New Hate Group (Pages: 1 2 3 .. 12 )

What would it take to ACTUALLY impeach Obama?

President Barack Obama / your opinions

How Many Days Until President Barack Obama Leaves Office?

Obama's 'Gay Lover' Gets Revenge

oprah + obama=racism (Pages: 1 2 3 .. 7 )

I WILL bash on Obama, every chance I can get. (Pages: 1 2 3 .. 16 )

Facts and Info about Obama

Neo-Conservatism a Mental Disorder

The 10 dumbest things sarah palin has ever said (Pages: 1 2 )

The history of Marxism, Political Correctness, and the "Left"

I know it seems by some of these I am singling out conservative thoughts, but it wasn't my intentions. Perhaps it may be that conservatives post more threads bashing liberals than the other way around. I feel like these threads were just bashings of the opposites or were posted to get a fight started with no evidence to support their claims. They had no "conspiracy' content or any information to add to this site. I am sure there are more, I just didn't want to spend all day on this post.

Heres the deal as I see it.

If we remove a confrontational right wing thread, we get complaints that we favour the left leaning political spectrum. (Hey! we're liberal hippy softies pandering to Obama's administration.)

If we remove a confrontational left wing thread, we get complaints that we favour the right leaning political spectrum. (Hey! we're facist censoring pseudo Nazi's who have it in for the Obama administration!)

If we leave things be, and let the members decide where to put their energies, we are, apparently - "idiots."

All ways round, you guys get to complain, and the staff/board gets criticised. No win situation for us.

This section is called "US Political Madness" for a reason. Whats going on out their in USAland isn't pretty, and requires something of a thick skin. Those of a sensitive disposition need to put on some damn good armour, and hope that at some point the shooting dies down and people realise that the Kool Aid they've been drinking has been spiked with loopy juice.

Until that day comes, please...if its offensive, let us know via the alert button. Contrary opinions to your political leanings however may not be judged to be offensive solely on the basis of your opinion - all complaints are weighed against the T&C.

In the meantime, us Mods will be our bunker waiting for todays label to be applied to us. Its cosy down here and we have coffee, and occasionally Intrepid plays us a tune on the accordian, and Semper will skin a rat that we've managed to catch for us to eat.

This post has been written with humour, but also with a gentle message that I hope you can understand. We do what we can.

Did you even read what I wrote?
I clearly stated that it was not ideas or opinions or CONTENT, it was that it be expressed in a civil manner, which is what YOUR terms and conditions demand. Your rules, not mine!!
Whatever! Last word from me.

Yes. I read what you wrote. Thats why I took the time to sit down and type out a post in the thread, and why Intrepid did so earlier, and why other members have contributed as well.

If something is not civil, then by its very nature its likely to be offensive, is it not?

If you have a problem with anything you see on ATS then use the ALERT button that is present under every post and the staff will look at it.

Its a simple message.

One thing I've noticed is that the people who call longest and loudest for threads to be removed have an agenda and usually have their own threads that follow the same course.

I think old dragger is right. To much of the language is sensationalistic to garner stars and flags.

We need to keep the site friendly for all users.

Some of these threads are really genuinely across the line and an effort to at least keep the sensationalism out of thread titles and OPs would go a long way towards tempering the thread content in general.

As far as the mods go, they need more hands and eyes than they have. If you don't like a thread title or the language used. Alert a mod. I've found them to be responsive when I've communicated to them before.

I don't let the titles bother me but I do alert mods when vulgarity is used.
