The Brits have put money on the table for this project **source here** although the others haven't. Those remain in the suspects list for now.

The conspirationist in me says it's CIA's work as Fermilab is in trouble currently **source here** and probably more in a near future.
One could believe there is a hidden war between those two entities cern / fermilab (usa / europe) but i think there are u.s universities working on this project so it's a bit far fetched...but probably not entirely.
We're talking about fundamental physics, things that could revolutionize science, change our daily life in 20 years maybe.The benefits may be huge.

Common sense tells me to believe in a real power failure given the complexity of this hi-tech machinery.

Well obviously you wouldn't but you said there was no need for the LHC because we could just monitor gamma rays in the atmosphere! tell me how the hell we could do this? It's a scientific experiment to recreate the universe in its first nano-seconds.

I think it is amazing that the collider works at all.

The thread reminds me when I first start developing websites.

When the net and website was down I would say well the Internet isnt like changing channels on the TV.
