Gallup's October Crime poll finds 44% of Americans in favor of making marijuana legal and 54% opposed. U.S. public support for legalizing marijuana was fixed in the 25% range from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s, but acceptance jumped to 31% in 2000 and has continued to grow throughout this decade.

I really find it interesting that ATS has finally allowed a forum for the discussion of Alternate Substances, regardless of their current legal status, perhaps it is because of the nationwide trends as noted in the October Gallup poll.

A very interesting aside to the poll is the graphic in the article where it breaks down the US by region. It states that in the west region, 53% of respondents are in favor of legalization (re-legalization), with 46% opposed.

I know that polls and statistics are just a gauge, and that things can trend differently, but it appears that even if Marijuana is nor re-legalized, the debate of which is valid and required in a democracy, regardless of the supposed taboos on the subject, due to the substance's current legal status.

Once that veil of taboo is dropped, and the discussion can move away from Reefer Madness and other misconceptions, the plant itself could possibly be the key to a sustainable future. As far as I know, the Cannabis plant is the only plant on the planet that can be used to produce fiber, fuel, food, and medicine.

Time to stop hiding in shadows, and start discussing a future where the Cannabis plant is our friend and not foe...

Thank you for your contributions, however, we are not allowing legalization discussions at this time.

Within a few hours, too many threads and posts have begun that focus far too much on personal use and legalization issues. Since advocacy of legalization relates directly to personal recreational use of drugs, such discussion is not allowed in the new forum.

Please focus exclusively on the wide ranging conspiracy issues related to drugs, such as government involvement in drug trafficking, pharma influences, and the war on drugs (to name a few).
