Black Hole Creates Galaxy

Astronomers have long wondered which came first, the black hole or the galaxy around it. The leading theory holds that the two co-evolve, starting small and building over time.

But colossal black holes may zap galaxies into existence from scratch, new observations suggest.

Astronomers recently observed a peculiar large black hole that did not belong to a surrounding galaxy as expected. Until now, scientists thought that this black hole's host galaxy was merely shrouded in dust and rendered invisible to us.

The black hole, designated HE0450-2958, is located about 5 billion light-years away from Earth. It is a type of supermassive black hole known as a quasar, which releases extremely bright jets of high-energy light.

Researchers used the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope to capture new observations of the quasar targeted to search for dust in long-wavelength infrared light.

"Observing at these wavelengths would allow us to trace dust that might hide the host galaxy," said Knud Jahnke of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg, Germany, who led the observations. "However, we did not find any. Instead we discovered that an apparently unrelated galaxy in the quasar's immediate neighborhood is producing stars at a frantic rate."

The astronomers think the black hole is powering star formation in the nearby galaxy by spraying its jets of high-energy particles toward it. In fact, the quasar could have triggered the galaxy's formation in the first place when its energetic jets hit nearby clouds of gas. And as time goes on, the neighboring galaxy will likely grow to encompass the black hole at last.

"The two objects are bound to merge in the future: The quasar is moving at a speed of only a few tens of thousands of kilometers per hour with respect to the companion galaxy, and their separation is only about 22,000 light-years," said researcher David Elbaz of the Service d'Astrophysique, CEA Saclay in France. "Although the quasar is still 'naked,' it will eventually be 'dressed' when it merges with its star-rich companion. It will then finally reside inside a host galaxy like all other quasars."

The astronomers detailed their findings in a paper published recently in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics and an upcoming paper in the Astrophysical Journal.

I caught this on another website, it's interesting news. Blackholes seem to be the alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end.
But which came first??

You might want to ask the chicken.

To be more serious, this sort of reminds me of ouroboros:

Ancient civilizations may have observed the Milky Way and noticed it looks like a snake biting its own tail. They may have also noticed that the Milky Way appears to move in a circular motion as our planet rotates through the solar system. Thus, the Ouroboros can represent what we see from Earth on certain dates of solar events (Geocentric astrology) as we orbit through the solar system.

The above quote is about half way down the article.

It's not the same as Black Holes creating galaxies, but I think the symbolism could work for those too.

Excellent find OP! I always enjoy reading new cosmological theories.
And this is one that I've always wondered about. Black Holes must offer something to the act of creation in the universe. If you havent yet, check out the theory of hawking radiation

Hi, I'm newbie here.

Better go straight to business...

So if I remember right Alex Collier talked about that our universe was born from black holes and so all the galaxies are born too that way.

I was wondering this couple weeks ago, and looks like in this news and Alex's thoughts have some correlation?

Anyone else thought about it?

I like the idea of being able to use them to compute data. Considering black holes are thought to have the ultimate density of anything in the universe, they would be the perfect medium to store and process information. the ultimate laptop.

One usually thinks of a black hole as an omnivorous object swallowing energy and spitting some of it back in the form of Hawking evaporation radiation, consisting of particles created in pairs out of the vacuum near the edge of the black hole. In principle, a tiny black hole can be formed in a way that encodes instructions for performing calculations. Correspondingly, the answers could be read out from the escaping Hawking radiation.

Why use a black hole at all? Because of the presumed tremendous density of information and potential processing speed implicit in the extreme black hole environment. Seth Lloyd of MIT has previously addressed himself to calculating the conceivable limits on the computing power of such a black hole computer (Nature, 31 August 2000) and arrives at a maximum processing speed of about 10^51 operations/sec for a 1-kg black hole.

Lloyd observes that in a (theoretical) black hole computer, the fastest computational substrate we can envision, the time it takes to communicate information, anywhere within the system is no longer than the time it takes to process (operate on) this information, at any location. Communication issues are fundamental problems in existing computational architectures, a problem known to system architects as the "memory wall" or memory bandwidth problem. Lloyd suggests that this hidden equivalency, involving the resolution of communications issues at the black hole limit, has some as-yet-unknown universal significance. To me, that significance is what we might call the "black hole computational attractor" of the universal space-time manifold. Due to careful initial design of universal parameters (most likely, a self-organized design), this state appears to be the preferred universal developmental destiny for all complex computational systems.
