Prison raffles off a day out to inmates for a £1 ticket

But there was incredulity today when it emerged that one convict is actually going to have their wish granted - as first prize in a raffle.

The lucky inmate whose ticket is drawn in the £1 draw will be able to spend a day on the outside, enjoying themselves to their heart's content.

Just more insanity...

Around 500 inmates at Kirkham, near Preston, will be eligible to buy a £1 raffle ticket out of their prisoner's pay.

To be in line for the prize of a day's freedom, they will also have to help prepare a Christmas dinner for local pensioners which is being funded by the draw.

The owner of the winning ticket will be assessed to ensure they are safe to be released, and will be able to spend their day of liberty as they wish.

The only condition is that they must not breach any court orders, for example approaching someone who gave evidence against them in court.

Not sure they would want to come out, they might miss TV or table tennis or one of the other entertainments they share. Where do they get the money from anyway?!? If you can save with free room and board with TV etc I can understand why the prisons are over crowded.

This is just madness, it is actually quite cruel as well. If the winner has another six years to go imagine how he/she would feel.
