My point was that we don't have to let it happen...

We are not powerless. Communication should be free. Allowing subtle controls over internet medias is at the very basic interpretation an excercise of telling people who they may speak/socialize with.

I cannot abide being told who to talk to nor how I should think...

Count me in as well.
It's the seemingly innocent and "for the good of the people" policies like this that lead to the more dangerous policies that strip our freedoms from us in small doses so "We the People" do not notice

Do it! Let's crush their ludicrous legislation that is truly only another way to take away our freedoms! Power to the people and to heck with this awful legislation!

I'd sign it too, in a heartbeat.

No way I'm gonna just sit by and watch while they take away ATS and the freedom of the interwebs.

What nonsense! There are some sites which use unsavoury tactics but the web is truly democratic - people just won't use that site.

Not to question what I'm going to do without ATS, hang out at Yahoo Answers?

hey SkepticOverlord, why not just give people the option to donate via paypal? I'm pretty sure some people are more than willing to fund this site.

As I understand it, they're trying to avoid a two tiered membership system where those who donate feel a sense of higher entitlement than those who don't.

Drama potential: High

Edit to add: I think you'll also find that SO's efforts though focused on, are not limited to, ATS. This is a much bigger issue that affects everyone on the web.

The solution seems simple to me; host ATS in another country.

While this may seem like the easy way out, in the end the issue is much bigger. It means standing up and fighting for our freedoms, rather than simply running away to a temporarily safe place while the corporate steamroller inches along.

I'd sign a petition, mainly to show solidarity though.

I may be wrong but for a petition to hold any sirt of weight it is going to have to be provable that all those participating are individuals and not some randomly generated names, which then gives the 'powers that be' more information about us, the consumers, to better target their products. I'm sure they would welcome a genuine list of users who could be connected to internet useage.

IMO, a more worthwhile enterprise is for communities to be loyal to themselves, generate business amongst themselves and simply boycott big business. OK you're not going to have the same muscle and impact to begin with, but eventually communities who are loyal to themselves are going to have more potential to achieve their goals than attaching themselves for whatever reason, to advertising income, coverage etc.

You have to create your own freedom rather than swinging on the coat tails of those who have already done so.

Count me in!! It seems like its just one thing after another, what ever happened to freedom of speech and everything that goes with it. Also what are the true reasons behind this then?

I suggest the admin here do whatever they can to make sure the website survives this bill passing (if it does), and then have a group here making it a priority to override corporate agendas in regards to the information being posted.

Basically, ATS needs to sell out if need be, but keep a group in the background, an almost unspoken kind of thing, that allows the same quality of information to exist here.

Take tips from TPTB themselves in your operation.

I think we've all seen just how effectively these governmental oversight commitees work...

Also I'm pretty sure that ATS would still be inaccessible to those in the US if the legislation was to go in effect. Doesn't matter where the website is hosted.

Yes, I would sign the petition.

While I understand the thinking behind a donation run, I think that's jumping the gun a little.

If we all click on advertiser links, buy some of their stuff and/or buy some ATS gear, then ATS makes a little money for the ATS bank. I'm sure that Mr Overlord would prefer to earn an honest crust, rather than depend on donations.

I'll sign it.

Don't know if the signatures of non-Americans count, but I'll sign it anyways.

It does more than that, you remove your money from the local economy, voting with your pocket book is among the most effective ways to instigate governmental change.

Move the servers up here to Canada and bring as many fellow web masters as possible.

What else would you expect from a corrupt government that is controlled by corporate "special interests" lobbyists etc?

This plan has dual advantages for the government, it can put a lot of websites out of business and, can in ways be used to control content.

If this happens consider keeping ATS alive via member subscription fees... That may be your only option in the end if they have their way... and of course they will find a way to tax the hell out of you for collecting fees.

Money makes the world go round they say, same is true for the internet as it is in the real world.

The corporate giants have for the most part killed small businesses, and with current and pending legislation as well as other aspects of the overall government agenda small business will be completely eliminated.

You expect the internet to be immune from this?

The capitalist free market system will be killed period, and for the most part it is nearly dead now.... They want only the elite and corporate giants to survive this economy for a reason.... Socialism!

Yeah, that's right! Socialism.

Don't be fooled, this plan has been in the works for a very long time.

Hey, when all is said and done perhaps we will be able to purchase exclusive internet access through Wal Marts only, and get our health care there too, along with everything else our government checks can buy.

You can fight this all you want, but it is futile, you're not a member of the exclusive billionaires club with your own bought and paid for government representatives and presidential administration.

Above Top... what?
