Swine Flu RECALL: H1N1 Vaccine Pulled In Canada

www.huffingtonpost.com

LONDON — Pharmaceuticals company GlaxoSmithKline PLC said Tuesday it has advised medical staff in Canada to not use one batch of swine flu vaccines in case they trigger life-threatening allergies.

Company spokeswoman Gwenan White said that they issued the advice after reports that one batch of the swine flu vaccine might have caused more allergic reactions than normal.

Mods: I tried placing this in the Swine Flu section to no avail. Sorry for the inconvenience.

White said the batch at issue, which has been distributed across Canada, contains 172,000 doses of the vaccine. She declined to say how many doses had been administered before the advice to stop using them was given.

White said U.K.-based GlaxoSmithKline wrote to Canadian health care professionals advising them to stop using the batch on Nov. 18. She says a total of 7.5 million doses of the vaccine have been distributed in Canada.

Well....thank goodness the pharmaceutical companies were granted immunity from any side effects.

I have a feeling this is just the start.

If there were a safe way to mass produce vaccines for a new virus in less than 6 - 7 months they never would have been granted a pass for any legal ramifications.

This is what some of us having been trying to say from the start: It's not necessarily that we think the government is out to inject us with some crazy poisonous bio-weapon (although that still remains a possibility
), rather we are apprehensive that with such a lack of testing and known side effects, getting the shot may very well be more dangerous than getting Swine Flu.

ya this has been making the news lately
even before the recall there were signs of an oncoming recall

keep in mind though that they refuse to release certain information
like 6 people got adverse reactions, but 6 out of how many?

that's the scary part
it could have been 6 out of 100 or 6 out 30
if they aren't givign this info it must be pretty bad

Couple of things that I think are worth drawing attention to:

--One batch is being recalled that contained 172,000 vaccines that potentially may cause life-threatening side effects.

--Officials declined to say how many vaccines were already administered. In New Jersey, our vaccine clinics seem to be full and people are on a waiting list. I wouldn't be surprised if more than 90% of this batch had already made its way into someone's body.

-- The date of the recall was November 18th. Anybody in Canada receive their vaccine over the weekend? Anybody know if they are contacting anyone that may or may not be affected by said recall?

Edit to add:

GlaxoSmithKline has recalled a lot of its H1N1 swine flu vaccine Pandemrix in Canada following complaints of adverse reactions from the vaccine, reports said.

GlaxoSmithKline has asked that the October batch of H1N1 swine flu Pandemrix be taken out of circulation because it produced serious and immediate anaphylactic reactions in one out of 20,000 vaccinations, compared with one out of 100,000 in other shipments.

Also, this article says that they are experiencing adverse reactions in 1 out of 20,000 versus the normal 1 out of 100,000.

Note: All emphasis added by me.

Actually, they are reporting that about 1 in 100,000 suffer from severe adverse reactions in a good batch.

In this particular recalled batch, 1 in 20,000 are suffering from severe side effects.

However, they are claiming that they have received back approximately 100,000 of the recalled batch -- which means approximately 72,000 people have already been injected prior to the recall.

CTV National News: John Vennavally-Rao reports that more than 100,000 doses of the H1N1 vaccine were withdrawn on Thursday after a number of people who received the vaccine suffered a potentially life threatening allergic reaction which has raised some concerns.

In regards to the recall, this has very little to do with the safety testing of the overall effects of the vaccine itself. This is indicative of a potential manufacturing/culture oversight in a set number of batches. The language of the report posted switches frequently between referencing that batch and overall vaccine administration - and it can be a bit confusing.

If there were a safe way to mass produce vaccines for a new virus in less than 6 - 7 months they never would have been granted a pass for any legal ramifications.

It's no different from the seasonal flu, at least in that regard. H1N1 is only exceptional in that it's not following the typical flu pathology and has the potential to be a very serious issue.

H1N1 isn't such a big deal because of it's current potential for transmission and morbidity - but because of who it's shown most capable of killing, how fast it can kill, and uncertainty over how it will mutate next. That's the main goal of vaccination here. Containment and control. The more people are vaccinated, the harder it is for the virus to spread and the lower the population it has, the less it will reproduce. The less it reproduces, the less it mutates.

It's not necessarily that we think the government is out to inject us with some crazy poisonous bio-weapon

I think an ATS poll would likely show otherwise, or at least betray a large segment of the viewer base which thinks it's a government plot to depopulate the Earth.

rather we are apprehensive that with such a lack of testing and known side effects

As is the case with the seasonal vaccine. They never know for sure ahead of time which forms of the virus are going to be most prolific the next season. We can do a good educated guess based on S. Hemisphere flu virulence, genetic analysis to determine likely mutations, and other factors. The seasonal flu only immunizes against the few strains which are suspected to be the most prolific, and it must be updated, concocted, tested, and approved in a very short timespan.

The vaccine is right on time, actually. It's the virus which has already reached infection levels not typical of other strains until around February.

So it's a cost vs. risk analysis we have to make. The more you delay for testing, the greater the increase of risk in missing your window of opportunity for vaccination. Miss that window, and you're done for the season. It's too late.

To the best of my knowledge, though, the actual vaccine itself is standard and has had years of testing. The only difference between the H1N1 vaccine and seasonal vaccine shots - is the genetic structure of the dead virus we're trying to immunize against.

This is a great boon to vaccination manufacturers and receivers both, actually. Believe it or not, it can take up to thirteen years for a new medication to pass Phase III clinical trials. That's quite a bit beyond our 6 month (roughly) window of opportunity. But since the vaccine itself is already well tested and approved long ago, and continues to be evaluated in Phase IV post-market research, then testing for effectiveness in creating a new vaccine on the fly is more or less limited to identifying and expressing certain protein structures which offer the greatest response from the immune system.

You said it perfect.

Whether you think the government is out to ruin our life's or not, it IS proven that they enjoy making plenty of mess ups, which is why I did not trust them with this vaccine.

On top of that, I would rather suffer from the swine flu than get the vaccine.

Just checked the CDC website for and update and there is nothing.

Is this source legit?

Pandemrix not approved in US so no reason to put on CDC site. I read the patient insert and it says after vaccination, patients may have a false positive read for HIV and hepatitis. WTF? Blogged about it at www.ahrcanum.com and also the list of the usual toxic ingredients found in so many of the H1N1 vaccines. Mfg by Glaxo it is adjuvanted w squalene. Imported from Belgium I think.

My mother, older, with MULTIPLE heath problems, got in line for her Swine Flu vaccine yesterday. In New Jersey, clinics are few and far between and many have been cancelled due to too many people and not enough shots.

The interesting thing that i did notice though, was out of the 500 or so people waiting to be injected, NONE were kids. Most, from what I could tell, seemed to be between the ages of 35 - 70. And the clinic started at 4:30 -- so yes, schools were already out.

I just thought that it was suprising given the recommended ages for vaccination.

They did vaccinate everyone in line and didn't turn anyone away that I saw based on not meeting the "core" group requirements.

I was going to start a new thread but i think this can go in here:

British drugs giant GlaxoSmithKline has warned the Canadian medical authorities that a batch of its anti-H1N1 vaccine can trigger potentially dangerous allergic reactions. The Canadians have withdrawn the batch from use and are testing it after it produced a range of serious reactions, notably in the heart and lungs. The recall affects 172,000 dises of the Arepanrix vaccine.

“We’ve been asked by the manufacturer GSK not to use this vaccine at this time pending further investigation,” said Manitoba chief medical officer Joel Kettner.

Thirty-six Canadians, including one little boy whose face swelled up like a balloon, suffered severe allergic reactions after vaccination. 200 others died.

“It is a serious thing that has the potential to kill – but fortunately seems to be relatively rare,” said Dr Neil Rau, an infectious disease specialist.

Canada has been particularly badly hit by the flu virus, and has vaccinated around a fifth of its population, or nearly seven million people, already. GSK has sold seven point five million doses to Canada
