When the tape was made public Nasa claimed ignorance, simply saying that no such incident had occurred. However, people were listening to it with their own ears, and it sounded very real to them.

NASA then claimed the transmission was real, but it was a joke on the part of the astronaut. This didn't fly well, either. When you hear the tape you'll understand why no one felt there was any sense of humour in the astronaut's voice.

There is an audio clip on the website I think you should check it out. The astronaut clearly says...

"uh houston this is discovery we still have the alien spacecraft under observance."

Hear it for yourself.

To me it sounds like his mouth is full of marbles and he's got his mouth too close to the mic.... Its just too hard for me to hear what he's saying, i cant make it out, it hurts my ears too much to stand it... Sorry, not being a troll or anything i just cant understand what he's saying, BUT just because i cant understand whats being said DOES NOT mean that its BS.
Just because you cant understand, doesnt say its not so...

I can't find that audio anywhere other than that page. I don't know who this Ken Welch is but I noticed on his homepage all his research is supposedly funded by donations.

Oh by no means was I implying that it didn't happen. It just raises a few eyebrows for me. Like I said, I don't know who this guy is and what might possibly give him the inside scoop and how he could possess this audio that no one else seemingly does.

I guess without any credible source there is not much here.

This was discussed here before

There was no woman on the flight...

This must be at least the 10th duplicate thread on this topic.

The guy who made this recording, Donald Ratsch, says it's a hoax. Why would you argue with the guy who made the recording? (I don't think he realized it was a hoax at first).

Personally, the reason I didn't bother posting in that thread (or posting earlier in this thread) is nothing to do with cliques but instead is related to the fact that the same audio clip has been posted repeatedly on ATS in recent weeks.

The other relevant threads recently posted on ATS in relation to exactly the same audio clip include:

Recording Of Astronaut UFO Encounter.

and
Astronaut heard saying "We still have the alien space craft under observance"**Audio Only**.

As I mentioned in those threads, the relevant audio clip was released to the UFO community by Donald Ratsch (see the July 1989 issue of the MUFON Journal). Ratsch stated that he recorded the relevant audio via his audio scanner "from the space shuttle Discovery through WA3NAN, the club station of the Goddard Amateur Radio Club at Greenbelt, Md, transmitting on 147.450 MHZ".

Ratsch has subsequently stated that he heard the same voice saying something similar a year later (when the shuttle crew was different).

Thus, Ratsch concluded that "the target voice was a hoax probably from an amateur radio operator".

In other words, the person that recorded the audio clip does NOT believe that it was the voice of an astronaut or a transmission from a shuttle mission. Instead, he believes that it is a hoax.

See, for example, James Oberg's email on Updates here.

All the best,

Isaac Koi

I have listened to some pilot to tower transmissions before.. This one is remarkably clear. If it is what the man who recorded it says it is..it is quite remarkable...and telling!

I believe this to be a hoax, have done since day 1.

Observance is not a word that makes any sense either in the UK or the USA,.

My thoughts were, and still are, someone broke into the band being used, and intended to say something close, but their nerves got the better of them, and that is what came out.

Several of us looked at this deeply, and there was no Female on board, unless some crew me kept secret, members where kept secret, which is not impossible, and has been thought of on other missions before, mostly classified Military flights.

I cant help feeling, that who ever did this and carried out this broadcast, had a chance to create one of the biggest hoaxes in the 20th Century, ie using a male voice, and correct and thought out wording, just a little more research before the event, then it would have been hard for anyone to disprove really.

But IMO most deff a hoax.

Would like to add, because this has been covered before on other threads, is not important, just by some of the first responses it shows not everyone was aware of this story, and being unaware why would they search for it? like so many other threads, repetition is sometimes a good thing, until we get a forum that covers stories and cases where these things can be put so all new comers can see them, but I don't see how that would work, unless it just had a list of links to old repeated often threads, hard to find things here already.

Maybe a did you know or a threads you may find interesting forum?

This is a much better recording if you have realplayer - or you can download the player by clicking the nasa recording link symbol.

This also makes sense since the band was the easily accessible ham band being used by a radio club for retransmission of NASA a/g. It was not -- and even Ratsch never claimed it was -- the raw NASA transmission. People like the OP helped to muddy the waters by adding imaginary details (many listeners, e.g.) to the narrative. There's too much of that going around already in the strange world of UFOria.

I think the bigger issue is -- how can enthusiasts be encouraged to look for ALL angles on stories such as these, and how can search engines be used to FIND contrarian interpretations out on the Internet. I'm still baffled about how to develop effective search techniques.

There is a NASA page that has all transcripts for the voice recorder on the missions. I know they have the full Apollo mission transcripts but I don't know if they have the shuttle missions. I will look for this.

The Apollo transcripts does have John Glen reporting a UFO.

You are kidding right? The woman is a voice over telling you what the astronaut is about to say. The astronaut comes on after her and says it.
