Belgian PM named as EU president

news.bbc.co.uk
EU leaders have chosen the Belgian Prime Minister, Herman van Rompuy, to be the first permanent European Council President.

The other top job created by the Lisbon Treaty - foreign affairs supremo - will go to the EU Trade Commissioner, Baroness Catherine Ashton from the UK.

Both are seen as low-key consensual politicians.

Balkenende never stood a chance, he was pro the iraq war and was PM when Holland voted no to the EU constitution. Therefore his chances were reduced to 0.

Van Rompuy is just a grey mouse, he's only been PM of Belgium for a year. He's an obedient guy. He's definitely not the type of leader that Europe needs.

And so it begins, an unelected president of the EU, has come into being.

There has been an EU president for a while now. The only difference between now and before was that now the term is two years instead of six months and the office has more power.

What do you mean by it wasn't official before? They still had duties in the EU.

Can I be the unofficial president of the United States?

It was not official in the context, where he will be the one who represents the countries of the EU. Until now it was the PM's heads of state of each member country, who met other leaders of the world. Now that the EU President has been officially named, he will be represent not only the EU, but E.U. member states also.
