Federal oversight of subways proposed

www.washingtonpost.com

The Obama administration will propose that the federal government take over safety regulation of the nation's subway and light-rail systems, responding to what it says is haphazard and ineffective oversight by state agencies.

The proposal would affect every subway and light-rail system in the country, including large systems in Washington, New York, Boston, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

There are people who still claim that the Obama administration doesn't want to give all power to the state, also known as Socialism, but here is yet another example of what the Obama administration is doing, and all of this shows the plan that they have to consolidate ALL power to the state, and in this case the Obama administration want the FEDS to take over all individual state agencies over the subways, and light rail systems.

Obama administation officials claim that they are doing this, giving power to the FEDS over the subways and light rail systems "so that passengers can get to their destination safely..."

They used the excuse that too many accident are occurring, and in particular they used the June 22 crash of Metro's Red Line and failures in oversight that have surfaced in its wake to push for more changes in the law.

The obama administration is turning the Republic of the United States not only into a nanny state, but into a Socialist nation, a nation that will be controlled completely by the state/Feds.

This is not what socialism is, I wish more people would know that
This is far worse than Socialism could ever be.

Also, one thing to keep on eye out for is WHO or WHICH company will do the handling of this.

That company needs to be investigated.

What we really need in New York is oversight of the MTA (transit authority). They're corrupt and anytime they want to get their way they just threaten to shut down public transportation for the city. The last time they did it they agreed not to raise the fares, yet a short time later they did and now they want to do it again.

They hold the city hostage anytime they please and no one has any power to stop them because of the unions.

As for Obama, I think it's pretty blatantly obvious that is his trying to bring more and more of America under direct control of the federal government. If we wanted that we would've asked for it and we would've have created state and local governments.

How is the federal government going to know whats best for New Yorkers and their daily subway rides? The feds couldn't keep a model train set going without ending up billions in debt.

I don't see what the big deal is, maybe I'm just missing the point.

But it just seems like the "feds" are taking over safety regulating of the rails? It doesn't seem like all that bad of an idea to me for the government to set safety standands.

Do you also have a problem with the NTSB and the FDA? I think even greyhound buses fall under federal jurisdiction somehow and have to have certain safety standards.

I don't see how government setting safety standards and regulations is worse than socialism either.

Maybe I'm just missing the point.
