In warning to Russia, Iran says it can build S-300

With the delivery of an advanced air defense system to Iran long overdue by Russia, Tehran says it is capable of mass-producing replicas of the controversial Russian-made missile in the near future.

He said that while the Islamic Republic will be able to mass produce the system in the near future, Russia's commitment to the deal could lay the ground for future cooperation.

This is what I have been wondering personally for a long time... since Iran clearly has the technical know-how to make their own S-300, albeit more of a "Chinese knock off" version, why do they want to import the S-300 so bad??

Maybe they want to reverse engineer it or something. But since they're going to mass produce their own in the "near future", I guess they would use the data to improve their own version of it.

But anyways, why in the world hasn't Iran mass produced their own anti-aircraft system with the important bits of the S-300 system before now? They surely have the technology (solid fuel rocket systems and radar know-how), and with their resources it really shouldn't have taken so long...

I can only imagine that an established design, which presumably has been tested and debugged, is more desirable .And a greater deterrent , any perceived weakness in an Iranian made system will be tersted by Israel .

It certainly seems like a game changing piece of technology .

Why are they threatening Russia if they can build the S-300 themselves? It should be apparent to everyone that this regime are very very desperate.

Turkey now state funding terrorism by buying Iran's resources at 50% cut down prices, and so are funding this regime.

According to Ledeen, last monday saw an escalation of street violence and revolutionary guard commanders were assasinated, and this was implied by Ledeen to be civilian based.

You may have noticed a lull in reportage from Iran; that is because the situation is unusually explosive, and there is a great deal going on beneath the surface, all of it very damaging to the stability and legitimacy of the regime. Thus there is a clampdown on “news.” I don’t know if foreign correspondents are aware of these developments or not, but they are very significant.

One is that the tempo of the internal battle against the regime has picked up, and not just in street demonstrations and chants of “Death to the Dictator.” On the night of November 10-11 there was a very bloody gun fight in the area of Karaj, in which several senior Revolutionary Guards officers were killed or wounded. No announcement was made, although you can see one of its effects in a Reuters story:

“Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards force has replaced its commander for the greater Tehran area, its website said…The “Sepah News” website did not give a reason for the appointment of Hossein Hamedani as new Revolutionary Guards commander in Tehran, replacing Abdullah Araghi.”

I believe that General Araghi was either killed or seriously injured in the Karaj shootout. This is not the only high-level replacement in the IRGC in the past few days, nor is it likely to be the last.

They sure as # aren't gonna get em from the U.S...
So the Russian ones are next best.

Iran may make them sure, but Russia ones have already been tested for accuracy. Expensive to make and test those things... cheaper to buy.

Maybe they were hoping Russia would send some extra goodies in the package!?! Iran does have the capability to make their own but it is true that the Russian ones are already bug tested.

Iran can't make its own S-300. It's domestic SAM technology is nowhere near that level. That is pretty definite. What they might be able to do, is turn to a number of other countries that have the S-300 in their inventory. But even then, they would only be able to get a handful of systems, and probably won't be able to copy the guidance system.

Chinese version of S-300 unlike the Russian systems is mostly untested in combat environment, and its capabilities aren't known. Plus China isn't really looking for money here, so the only reason it might sell their SAM technology is if it is politically motivated. So Iran is not really in a position to warn Russia about anything.
