If in fact a political leader decided to bow to the Pope, I would hope it was only because in their own little world they truly believed that the Pope is their own religious leader in this world. I don't justify the bowing to the Pope, but I can understand how that wouldn't have a profound effect on politics.

However, the leader of the United States should not be bowing to any other political figures. He is representing the entire country politically. WE do not bow down to Japan.

If I meet with japanese people, it is customary to show respect by doing a half-bow, which is a common japanese greeting. This is not the same thing.

In all honesty though, what does it mean for us? It doesn't mean much. How many japanese people do you think will be stupid enough to believe that Obama's bow constitutes any kind of allegiance to japanese politics? Hardly any. Most will understand that Obama is a screw up BECAUSE of the bow and move on. Some will inevitably attempt to take advantage of Obama's naivete (or is it naivete that causes him to bow?), but there are worse things to pay attention to.

In the mean time, respect everyone on the planet and anytime you meet with anyone, show that you have a little humility and atleast nod for a second. Meaning, avert your eyes towards the ground to show a 2 second weakness. This makes someone much more comfortable in dealing with you if they are not an aggressive person. If they are an aggressive person, then you've just made them weak by making them imagine your weakness. Somehow, I doubt this is Obama's plan for the emperor, though.

Where was the outrage when Bush was required to stand until the queen sat? Isn't that the exact same thing, showing respect for a culture.

Oh well the Obama hating crowd will find any excuse to bash the guy. I don't much like Obama but i'm not going to have a go at him just for being polite.

He's just showing respect to someone, just because other countries don't have the same beliefs as us doesn't mean we shouldn't give them respect.

Isn't that what a gentlemen is suppose to do? Remain standing till the woman is seated? That called "manners". Sheese.

It's one thing to shake someone's hand and extend a courteous bow. It's another to bow over so far you're about to kiss someone's shoes like he did here and to the Saudi King or whoever. I mean my god............we are the United States of F'ing America.............we fought tooth and nail to OVERCOME this nonsense of monarchies and royalty. What the hell has my country become? Obongo needs to go back to Chicago and take is b'tch wife with him.

ALSO WHEN YOU BOW YOU DON'T LOOK AT THE FLOOR YOU LOOK INTO YOUR "OPPONENTS" or GUESTS EYES!!!!!!!!!!!! ALWAYS KEEP EYE CONTACT because otherwise it is a sign of weakness and cowardice.

Bowing is intrinsically tied into Japanese culture. One bows to another out of respect to a person. There is nothing wrong with that gesture given the cultural context to that particular form of endearment. Now, the President bowing to the King of Saudi Arabia or the Queen of England, that is another story, because I feel it has no bearing in terms of gestures with those particular royals, but Japan, perhaps? I bet even Obama removed his shoes before entering their residence, because you do not want to enter a Japanese person's home without removing your shoes. Big sign of disrespect! I can affirm that premise, from personal experience, because my sister-in-law is Japanese and there was an occasion I forgot to remove my shoes, and she made sure I never made that mistake again. However, that is another story.

Essentially, it is up to the President, whether it be the current sitting President or another down the road how they choose to greet world leaders. As long is it not perceived as being subservient to a particular monarch or world leader, and that it is in context with the cultural norms of the given country being visited, I see no problem. In terms of Japan, it is acceptable given their history with such a gesture. Anyway, we have other things to toil our minds over at present, besides the President, and his greetings the world over. Just my two cents on the story.

There is no Queen of England.

There really isn't.

Dude that bug on your sig line had me swatting at my screen! That rocks! Good post by the way.

If your posts weren't enough for us to gauge your level of intelligence, the thought of you clumsily wafting your hand at the screen because of a computer graphic surely is.

P.s. Your posts were enough.

EDIT: This post is a question to Kryties, NOT the daft one he was replying to.

You'd honestly have a drink with him, mate? Really? He is one of the most obnoxious, pig ignorant and arrogant people I've seen on here! He is every bad American stereotype rolled into one (which is something I despise because I would like nothing more than for people like him to stop shouting so loud, so the normal, decent and intelligent American can be heard!)

I mean... the guy uses the word "freedom" as plural!!!!

He's a terrible, terrible poster!

its called: RESPECT.

why would he NOT show respect to another world leader? lol why is everyone so negative about everything here

The only people that should bow to a leader of Japan are the Japanese. Obama disrespected himself by bowing as he is equal in respect as far as holding the title of President of the USA.

This shows his weakness in dealing with all world leaders. They will get what ever they want out of this stooge.

I take martial arts.
Of course, it's American Martial Arts, so it tends to be a bit diluted than the real deal, but some of the customs still transfer over.

Bowing is a sign of respect, yes.

Obama's bow does seem a bit submissive, not necessarily due to the depth of the bow, but as he's looking down instead of forward.
That said, I'm not at all familiar with how to properly and respectfully bow to a Emperor.

This seems to be rather inane, though, to use this to bash Obama. There are certainly other, and better things to do so.

Also, towards my fellow Americans, I'd really appreciate if you'd hold your temper. We are no longer the best in the world, if we were. Our success' have been built with the help of foreign aid, and if we were to attempt to alienate the rest of the world, we world suffer greatly.
Not asking you to be quiet, but knowing when to be respectful will go a long way for you.

Erm firstly it's a seperate thing, a monarch whether male or female sits first, know your history
Also in this age of equal rights why exactly is a gentlemen supposed to stand until the woman is seated? Oh and yes i follow that rule i'm just pointing out that it isn't exactly right in modern times

Secondly i wasn't saying there should have been outrage i'm just pointing out the hypocrisy.

Another person who doesn't know about royal etiquette, whether male or female the the monarch sits whilst everyone stands. Bush was following that code.

they should be praising the fact that he isn't the usual ignorant "I am american, i am the best" type of president.

Quite true. He is more along the lines of an naive, subservient, "I am a socialist, I am the best" type of president eh?

Until Obama is gone from office along with his simple minded followers we need to become accustomed to bending over for the Chinese, Japs and other debt buyers of the Socialist Republic of the former United States.
