One thing if you are a Felony you are not allowed to purchase or posses a gun. But that law doesnt stop them from being bought on the black market. The only thing that keeps the American Goverment in check is because we have guns lots of them, they have started to trample our rights, but they hold back in fear because they know somewhere there is a Tim McVeigh, a Terry Nickols, and even a Oswald.

Unlike in G.B, where if you say something that can be viewed as Hate you get locked up, or cameras everywhere. That stuff may work for your people, But it wont fly here in America. Does that make us stupid or pig headed? Maybe in your eyes (country) but here in the US we like our guns where they are...

In Norway you can apply for a special 'targeted person' application which is often for former politicians or former criminals or... people who were stalked. Then they can carry a concealed weapon (handgun).

Former criminals? Erm... that's not really a good idea, is it? I mean, I know the use of the word "former" is important. I presume you are talking about ex gangsters or members of firms, who may have a price on their heads either from rival firms or their own, who don't appreciate or trust people leaving the group?

Also, I would be worried about allowing victims of stalking a handgun, as they will be especially jumpy, possibly causing them to use the weapon, endangering an innocent or, possibly thinking the stalker is more a threat than he/she appears. Surely, if the police and courts believe someone to be in enough danger from someone to have them carry a concealed handgun, it would be sensible to instead pick up the stalker and if that doesn't work, then give the victim around the clock security?

I recently relocated to Amsterdam. I work for the branch of an American company. So I get to talk with folks face to face. Contrary to popular belief I don't find that Europeans hate us as much as you would think. They are more baffled by us then anything. A young dutch lady who I work with is understandably confused by the contradictory nature of America. For a people who scream loudest about how free they are, they have no problems giving their freedoms up. I had to agree. Her feeling is Americans loath one another. Americans will accept mas murder by it's citizens but make guns freely available. They will turn their back on it's indigent. Americans seem to want to be treated like children. She feels they let the government intrude on every aspect of their lives. And this is coming from a socialist.

My family and I love it here. The children especially. It's a very beautiful place. Yeah, the government is going to tax the hell out of me. I do well. But thats OK. At least I know where and what my tax dollars are being spent on. I can see it.

Nope. Compared to 100 years ago, the number of church goers in the UK has gone up.

That's not to say though that the UK is a religious country. It is one of the most secular countries in the 1st World. I don't know any church goers either and I don't think it would be easy to find a link to one on my tree of acquaintances. I have never been to church, except for a couple of weddings and funerals.

Yes, I'm reasonably proud to say that Britain is a godless society (which is exactly what the Spanish and French have called us since the reformation!
)

Handguns are easily conceable yes, but so our sawed off shotguns, M-4s, AK's with collasable stocks, ANY GUN can be conceled Tech-9s, Mac-10s, How much do you know about weapons? A handgun is dangerous but so are the rest, ESP when the can be collapsed and tuck them under a trenchcoat. Think about really think about it.

And they are also illegal, which is exactly what the Scandinavian was talking about!!

How can you not understand what he was saying? And why are you being so obnoxious about it?

It's quite humiliating, I find, to speak to someone so rudely when the point you are trying to make, makes you look just as "dumb" as you are accusing your opposition of being.

I think this is nothing more than a troll thread and I do not throw that term around loosely.
1. Calling people who live in the UK, European although geographicly correct is not the correct thing to call them just like you do not call Canadians and Mexicans American because they live in north america.

2. The term "brainwashing" has no real meaning and is just used to bash opposition, they do not see things your way so therefore they must be "brainwashed".

I've read different but there we go! Haha.

Although what i read was more based on 'religious people' not actual 'church attendances'.

Oh great! More ignorant uneducated insular Americans talking about countries that they know very little about. Some of you really do not have a clue .... do you?

The only thing that is common about these threads is the subject of guns. Is that what America is all about ..... guns. Where do you guys get off about guns?

Lets get one thing straight. Europe is not about guns, has never been about guns and we do not get hard-ons about guns. Guns to Europeans are for sporting purposes. Apart from that we have NEVER had a gun culture, so we do not view guns in the same way as Americans do. In a nutshell, we just dont do guns ... simple.

As for FREEDOMS, we Europeans probably have more FREEDOMS than most Americans do.

Don’t forget Higher taxes, and seriously how can you set there and say (with a straight face) that you "Europeans" have more freedoms then America? Freedom of Speech seems hard to come by over there in G.B. I mean for if you say anything Hateful it’s off to jail you go..... Let me know how that works out for you. (ask the Danish politician who was barred from entering G.B because he produce a video that Muslims found offensive.) or the Danish newspaper that was bombarded for “Hate Speech” for printer pictures that where unflattering about that fake prophet.

I don’t have anything against Europe, but you people are the first ones to blame the US for world problems, so it’s only natural that we Americans will fire back. It’s a tic for tact thing.

What the hell does having higher taxes got to do with it? Add up your tax bill, then add in your health insurance ....... you may find that we are quite close in comparison.

Freedom of speech is the same as in the US as long as you are not inciting hatred, IE race etc etc. This actually is a sign of a civilised society.

You really are ignorant.

Should have checked your facts before starting this really.

1. You can own a gun in the UK providing you're intelligent, trained, not a mental and using it for a purpose rather than trying to kill someone or act a act a hardman. The reason they were banned was to stop school shootings; which they did. Powerful guns are banned because they have no purpose in society.

2. You can own a knife just not carry it around in the street as loads of kids were getting stabbed.

3. Hooliganism hasn't been a problem in the UK for around 30 years.

4. The EU is elected, we have elections every four/five years.

5. In the UK the media control the politicians, not the other way round. They choose who gets fired and by putting pressure on the government to take decisive action. It's called the Fourth Estate.

Th CCTV situation is spot on for the UK, we're by far the worst in the world for this and even have a camera system that tracks the movement of every car on a major road (motorway and entering cities).

More worrying there's now a £9m police database that targets anyone involved in protests or attends poltical debate and they're called 'Domestic Extremists' and are followed by the police and can be arrested at protests for no reason at all.

I'm surprised to hear you say that! LOL

Actually the Germans and Swiss have quite a tradition of both civilian and military Schutzen. The matches were very popular, and were in fact almost a national sport that continue today. They weren't confined to just those countries as the Brittish and French were very involved also.

DISCLAIMER

I would say the majority of Americans don't believe what is stated in the OP. Those of us that know Europeans respect their culture and love visiting their countries don't think this way at all. You won't find many Democrats, Liberals, Independents, or Conservatives that bash Europeans when they actually know Europeans. The groups that promote this type of ignorance (anyone remember "Freedom Fries"?) are sensationalists playing to a small, but vocal minority of people who are probably moreso ignorant than intolerant of Europeans.

I've made friends with Germans, British, Scottish, and French visitors here in the states and most people with even a cursory knowledge of Europe respect it and its diversity of people.

Many of these generalizations flying back and forth come from a small group of people who haven't had real exposure to either side of the pond. Unfortunately, sensationalism rules the day so topics like these get air time and enforce views that are wrong on both sides.

Live above the fray, and don't get caught up in the football game.

Are you mad?

You are constantly trying to turn everything around and take it as far away from what the poster said, just so it fits in with what you want to say!

I'm not talking about the USA, obviously! And the fact that criminals can get hold of them, whether or not they are illegal has absolutely nothing to do with the point under consideration!

Guys, guys, let's stop all this 'my continent is better than your continent' nonsense. We should be uniting against the real enemy - Antarctica!

Sitting there quiet and smug the bottom of the world just biding their time until everyone else blows themselves up. That's when they'll take over.

Full of Nazis you know. And penguins.

God I hate those antarcticans.

Jesus! You just get better, don't you?

Dutch politician! Do you actually know anything about our Gert? Obviously not as you don't know his name or where he's from.

I don't think you understand the difference between freedom of speech and promoting hatred, which is illegal in all Western countries, including your own.

The debate about the cartoon was varied and interesting. The majority of people here were saying that the paper, though maybe thoughtless and silly, had every right in printing the cartoon and many were asking our papers to do the same in support but our papers were too scared of any comeback from extremists to do so.

No one is getting sent to jail for hate speech anyway. They may possibly get a fine, depending on what was said and if it resulted in any violent action from the them or anyone else.

Stop guessing and presuming about thinks you know absolutely sweet FA about and actually do a bit of research, or ask someone here who knows before making yourself look daft and intolerant!
