Mexican Drug Lord Tops Forbes' Most Powerful List

www.foxnews.com

A Mexican drug lord reputed to be hiding in mountains has been named the world's 41st most powerful man - ahead of French president Nicolas Sarkozy and Russia's Dmitry Medvedev.

I found this story interesting because a Mexican drug lord is more powerful than 2 heads of nuclear states. It further fuels the suspicions of people that those in control of certain countries really are not. However, I'm not sure of the hierarchy of France and Russia in terms of their process of setting off nukes. Maybe their presidents are not the final say in that situation. Story still made me laugh though.

"He who controls the spice, controls the universe"

-Dune

Obviously someone was a fan of Dune as a child!

But seriously, there's a lot more power in controlling a resource than there is in affecting policy.

Exxon Mobile could destroy the world economy if it wanted to, and it wouldn't have to fire a single bullet.

If any of you out there have dreams of being hegemonic dictators, I suggest you join or start a company that takes control of water rights. Sit on it a few decades, and by the 2030s you're going to have millions, if not billions of people paying you to drink the water you own.

Viva la capitalism!

how come all these powerful people are living in caves or moutains?
with all that power and money they are in caves and mountains?

Rightttttttttt

Most of the most powerful people live in the florida keys
and other places completely surrounded by water

and correct me if i'm wrong but isn't one of the bridges going to the floriday keys guarded by soldiers so that only powerful people are allowed to go?

I'm willing to bet you any money that it's one of the most pimped out caves you've ever seen.

Or he's had plastic surgery and is now living in the west end of London in a big swanky pad. He's a gazillionaire, he's not going to be living in a cave

yeh sarkozy got done over. His sexy wife might dump him for the drug lord.

MA i think it makes sense he lives in caves/mountains jam packed with note stacks. He would get hunted down by agencies if he lived in the city.

Anyone who has ever watched the movie "Scarface" should not be surprised by this news story.

I actually remember hearing that if Pablo Escobar were still alive his fortune would be rivaling Big Bad Billy Gates....

i wonder why no Rockefellers or Rothschilds are listed.

neither is the Queen of England, or the Netherlands.

and why is Osama Bin Laden on the list when hes been dead for a few years now? and how were his assets accurately measured, but nobody has been able to find him?

EXCELLENT find. And great questions from posters too...

...seems though that Forbes is measuring mainly perceived power, the kind that derives from public pull and drag. ...I'd like to see the real list - the one that names the names nobody ever speaks out loud.

notice that some of the people i named ARE the most powerful on the planet as they have their hands in all of the cookie jars.

and as far as bin laden goes, how can you be counted as a candidate for "most powerful" if youre dead?

That really strikes me as funny. The masterminds of the Terror are trumped by defeated politicians.

What a game.

Two words.

Jesus Christ

Certainly dead, of that there is no question. But the amount of power that person has over people is amazing to this day.

very well, i see you are determined to make your point, and i can see how a dead person might still hold sway over peoples minds.

however, everyone else on that list, except for bin laden is still alive.

and unlike jesus, people all over the world acknowledge that bin laden was a real person, who lived at the time he was described to live in.

and while i can agree with many of the things that jesus is supposed to have said, the verdict is still out on whether or not he really existed.

there is solid evidence of historical figures that had far less of an impact on the world before jesus was supposed to have existed. i dont see why there shouldnt be just as much if not more to accurately document jesus existance as well.

The only point I was making was that dead people (or even imaginary people) can be powerful.

I'm not that into it.

Funny they would put a dead man on their list.

This list doesn't make any sense at all in the first place. Just a bunch of well-off people with too much time on their hands giving us their personal opinions.
