Living in the real world, instead of the xenophobic and racist "Mr President is a socialist". The fall of the wall is symbolic to Europe not America. Why? The fall of the Berlin wall united Europe and strengthened Europe - nothing to do with America.

Obama is not a Communist and, if you think he is, then you obviously have no idea what communism means

Then why did Hillary Clinton feel the need to go?

Hm. Guess she just needed a vacation.

Nobody here in Germany expected the president of the US to come here for a little party. We understand, that he has better things to do, like saving the world.
And probably he simply knew, that everybody is waiting for the girls on a party, so he sent Hillary.

However, it was the US president Reagan, who caused the fall of the wall. On June 12th 1987 he demanded in Berlin:

"Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Und he did!

Funny how everyone calls supporters obamatrons and worshippers on this site yet it is the anti obama crowd that watches every single move.

Teh man is going to play sports. You just need to get over it and stop obsessing about every move.

I didn't even know Bush liked golf.

Bush and Clinton jogged on the track every single day. SO WHAT

You're not going to make me dig up actual historical sources are you?

Oh, fine then, here is an article with an interview of former Politburo member Hans Modrow....

Hans Modrow was a communist reformer in the Gorbachev mould. He had only just been given a place on the Politburo as East Germany's leaders tried to head off the demands for change that were sweeping the country. But as a new boy his opinions counted for little.

He remembers an agitated discussion about the travel restrictions - the laws which banned most East Germans from leaving the country and which had sparked off the popular discontent.

At the end of it the party leader, Egon Krenz, suddenly produced a new set of regulations. From now on it would be much easier for East Germans to travel.

The intention was to announce the changes overnight and phase in the new rules the next morning. Instead one of the Politburo members, Gunter Schabowski, blurted out the plans during a televised press conference - and compounded his error by adding the new rules would come into force "immediately".

Yes, their economy might have been in a shambles, but it was hardly "people power" that brought down the wall. Had the Politburo decided not to allow the opening of the border, then the border would not have opened.

Oh yes, I agree with inifinite. Often we here US peeps claim "such and such is communist", blah, blah blah. Usually from the same crowd who think the UK is a Police State and France is some Soviet bastion of a Workers paradise. These people have no clue what they're talking about and obviously need to do some reading and not still be stuck in the old Macarthyism era "The Reds are comin!!!" paranoia.

Because if the man had to stop and honor every historical event then he couldn't function as president. (no predictable puns and attacks needed here)

Seriously, every day has probably 10 historical events. Just because it is one you happened to focus on, doesn't make it the limelight.

True. But how many of those events have the same significance as the fall of the Berlin wall?

No, you can see obama's "hidden" agenda everywhere.

His news conference after the Ft. Hood shootings where he had a good time for a few minutes until he finally got around to mentioning the Ft. Hood tragedy. And then he sends his wife to Ft. Hood instead of going himself.

You also don't think the Ft. Hood tragedy is worth obama's time?

For the record, George Bush Snr attended anniversary events regarding the fall of the wall - Prime Minister Thatcher was too ill to travel.

Wow...he couldn't take off ONE DAY from his bussy schedule to honor the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, but he has the time to take several days off since he became President to play golf.... riiight...

So, the President must personally attend every crime committed in the country, just so you don't get your feelings hurt?

Did a President turn up for Columbine?

Did a President turn up for those Virginia University shootings?

Did a President turn up for any mass shooting (and there are alot!!) in the US?

I assume you want the President there at every crime scene, just to show he is worthy of your continued support?

Marg, first of all he takes days off to play golf, and do other stuff.... Second of all, he is not going to stop the healthcare bill, after all he was one of the people pushing for it, or any of the other laws which are really restricting our freedoms....

Third of all, the United States, and President Ronald Reagan helped to make this happen.

Fourth of all, this is not like the "Cinco de Mayo" that is celebrated every year.... This was the 20th anniversary...and him taking a day off to honor this day would have been the right thing to do, because IT IS WHAT PRESIDENTS DO... at leat one of the things they are supposed to do...

Maybe I misunderstood something but the locals here in CR are not calling the missile defense shield "help", they call it a "curse" and want to avoid it at any cost. Politicians might like it but the normal people don't.

Oh riiight...the people in Poland and the Czech Republic who despise Communism/tyranny don't want their countries being able to defend themselves against Russia, and much more so after the show of "who is boss" that the Russian government has been playing around with these, and other European countries..... riiiiight....

I'm not disagreeing with you except that there was way more at play than just internal reform in the fall of the wall. You are correct in saying that it wasn't people power that caused the fall directly although if it weren't for dissidents the wall would never have come down as quickly as it did. They had over 160,000 people jailed for being dissidents at a time when their economy was crumbling. With West Germany's offer to pay them $55,000 per person they saw it as killing two birds with one stone. It gave them a political "out".

Also, what impetus do all internal reforms have in common? Socioeconomic reasons are always behind reform, so I can't see how you can say that "people power" wasn't an indirect cause.

No.. it's not a "busy" schedule to push health scare, and it is not because Germany is not part of the US.

It's a temper tantrum.

He was denied a speech there during his European feel good campaign and now it's his form of twisted immature payback.

You expect less from the Presidential Diaper?

No, they are supposed to (in the US case anyway) run the country. If he cannot make it, then they send representatives.

Was he even invited? After all, the Queen wasn't invited to the 65th D-day anniversary earlier this year as the French committed a faux pas and invited the PM instead, when protocol indicates it should be the Head of State, not some lumpy old scotsman who whined and slimed his way into the job.

Sorry but with the darn unconstitutional health care bill in congress to take away my liberties and choices, with the high unemployment in the nation that can render me without an income anytime, with the plain in site robbery of my tax payer moneys and the downfall of America as we know it, no even I give a crap about the Berlin wall anniversary.

We need to worry about us, our nation and what the president is doing in our nation and leave the trivialities of other nations celebrations to them.

We go bigger problems that the Berlin wall celebration have right now.

wow, it's just amazing how bad your life is now. let's see... in 10 months, there is an unconstitutional bill in congress, you have been robbed of your taxes, and the downfall of america has happened.
i don't know what country you live in...but here california, pretty much everything is the same, except for groceries and gas going up. but my property taxes on my paid-off house went down a bit, prices on clothing have come down, pizza is a little cheaper, my electric bill is about the same, car insurance is about the same, my 83 yr old mothers convalesant
home bill went up a 100 bucks a month in august. over 100 forclosed homes have been re-sold just this week, looks pretty normal to me. maybe you should move to vietnam or cambodia...i hear they have really, really, low taxes, and their government is getting a little better, i think they paved some roads there lately.
