No, it's not really AI. It's a take-off on the Eliza program, which simulates the responses of a "Rogerian" therapist. Eliza has got to be 15 or 20 years old at least. It followed a simple plot of trying to reflect back to the user words it perceived as "trigger" words. Like,

"My mother said I had to come here"

"How do you feel about your mother?"

That sort of thing.

This cleverbot no doubt has a much more complicated algorithm, plus a larger database of information to draw from. I'm not convinced that this alone indicates "intelligence".

What I really think is that the cleverbot illustrates how much of our interactions are more or less reflexive, not actually intelligent conversation but social discourse. We're not so much exchanging information as simply offering "strokes", acts of support, recognition, etc. "How are you?" is more of a greeting than an inquiry into your health. A good bit of what we say and do is just social behavior.

Cleverbot doesn't pass the Turing test. When I asked it "Who are you?" it responded, "I like pie." That is not what an ordinary human would say.

Who is President of the United States?
Not me.
Why not?
Because I am stupid.

At least it's got a sense of humor...

your welcome, i had such a crappy day today adn find this when i got home certainly gave me what i needed.

Sometimes it does give outlandish replies, though sometimes it does give good replies and continueing conversation.

To that i guess that sometimes it becomes overwhelmed. Imagine how many of us from ATS just tapped it in the last few hours, ontop of any1 else on the internet.

There are different kinds of bots like this. I don't know if this one is Eliza, but it's not really "clever" compared to some other bots online.
It's responses depend on what you say. For example, if you say <2012> there are a number of responses that it has for that, and it will take one at random. At least that's how the bots I've known have worked, and I believe this is one of those.
Back in the day when AIM was popular and the chat rooms were not so full of bots, there was a website, www.runabot.com It no longer works, but it used to offer people a bot program where you could download something called a "chatrunner", and you could put your bot in chat rooms and watch people talk to it. People usually went into the conversation thinking the bot was a person.
You start out with the basic Eliza or Alice or whatever bot you prefer (Alice was the best), and then you could modify its responses and create "modules" where you could easily program whole conversations and make your bot sound as real as you want, because it's all preprogrammed from either the bot's original responses or whatever responses you put in. It was freaking hilarious at times.

I searched and runabot.com is no longer working, but if you really, really wanted to, you could "create your own bot" at www.pandorabots.com
