I work with the "internet" everyday and can tell you that even during PEAK traffic times, we're not even close to capacity. I would think that tons of people home, in bed, ill - would result in even less traffic.

On antoher note, even if they shut down all of the root servers, you cannot shut off the "internet". You can shut down the ISPs, the Proxies etc... but people will still be able to utilize the network. You will have to be very technical to do so, but it can be done.

Nope, if the internet shuts down it is because they want complete information blackout. My advice, if the internet shuts down then you had better be prepared for the house to house round-ups.

If they manage to shut it down I can still get out with my Linux box and ham radio. lol lets see them stop that.

I'm not very technically minded, but, aren't all these businesses already using the internet every day? Why would it make a difference whether they are using it from an office or a home?

Surely, use is simply moved, there's no increase in usage, it's just accessed from a different location.

My gut is telling me this is just another excuse to enable control of information.

Those were my first thoughts exactly.

How convenient- we get a pandemic caused by a virus with vague origins, which is used to justify internet lockdown.

Where's the obama defenders now? They only come out when they're riled up by the crazy right-wing.

Seriously, explain this

These people don't know what the hell they're talking about.

Half the people that use a computer at work ARE USING THE INTERNET - all day long.

I am. All over it. Music, videos, games, etc. All day. And most of my co-workers are doing the same.

If anything ... 40% of people staying home would actually INCREASE the bandwidth available because most people at home would be using a lower-speed connection and not eating up all the high-speed connections that most companies have.

Are we really paying the GAO for these ideas? Thanks a lot Government Accountability Office – you've wasted no telling how many hours thinking up things that might never happen. Maybe you should get together with FEMA ... they really seem to have their stuff together when it comes to planning and response.

A t1 is like dialup these days. Most sites with a t1 have at least OC3 sonnet. That like 28 t1 lines per location.

First of all they are worried more about the internet instead of malls or stores or places where people congregate at. Many people are on DSL and/or broadband cable modem. Cable companies already have something and it's called shared bandwidth and if that doesn't help there's the company capping users to a set bandwidth. I on the other hand have FISO (fiber optic) which doesn't share. This is a no brainer and an excuse for companies to try to charge more in an emergency and also for companies to limit competition by destroying competitors. Not to mention for the powerful and news media to quiet certain websites that tell TO MUCH of the truth or are close to the truth.

If where in a pandemic, then I would expect to see people falling down in the streets.

The amount of BS in that article is knee deep... Basically, there is a federal government entity with legal power to censor all history books in all the states because they need space for commerce and emergency matters.
The reason being people gathering in libraries due to pandemic preventing certain "businessmen" from reading "business" books.

I mean... come on, I bet "popular sites" will be Wikipedia and ATS as well
.

I think if ATS were to shut down it would be the best thing, now hear me out. People on ATS talk way too much, and never do anything about it. If ATS were to shut down, maybe some action would take place. Maybe people will march up to their local government and complain, instead of sitting behind the monitor and complain.

Just a thought.

Here in Canada our government just passed this type of law, I got a shiver when I read the story. As a net-admin student I can technically see the reasoning, but this is just wrong.

This is a backdoor approach to censorship. The excuse here was to prevent the enevitable need for increased tech costs (which will go up regardless).

'Save you money' is second only to 'protect the children' as a guarenteed sale.

Gotta love it.

As far as paranoia goes, I can't help but wonder what government regulated ISP's will be advised to see as 'unnecessary'.

Heh. Guess you didn't notice that Sharia Law has crept into your government's law. They keep that quiet so not to disturb tourism.

Mass graves are also part of emergency management.

You can address me as madam, thanks.

Sharia law? HAHAHAH you have to be kidding me.

No we do not have sharia law here, I do understand that there are sharia courts for MUSLIMS only, and it is not forced amongst the population, they have limited punishments and a limited system which is not recognised by the court system.

I have no idea what planet your on but pass the doobie.

I am aware of the Australian governments crimes against its own population including genocide. I am also aware of the fact christmas island used to be a nuclear proving ground and now they put refugees in camps there.
I am aware that we have no human rights here, I am aware that the government receives most of its funding from the funneling of illegal profits from drugs and the importation of cannabis in exchange for the old SLR rifles to paupa new guinea to destablise it.

I am well aware of what goes on at pine gap, I am well aware of the freemason governing system of australia. I am well aware of everything happening here.

you have no news to tell me and I suggest you stop sh!tting on muslims for 5 minutes they arent bad people. Every religion has its zealots, we have the KKK for christianity, Zionism for the jews, and Al Queda's warped take on Islam.

If you turn out to be a zionist it wouldnt suprise me due to your hate speech and tone.

If you want to experience loss of personal freedom, restriction and other horrific crimes against humans travel outside the US. Really.

Lol, lol and lol again.
They dont care about our little life yes, but they do care about a lot of us dying in order to get a decent and cleaned planet to live on.

This is just brilliant. A post based entirely on a 'worst case scenario what if' is then taken as a call to arms for the paranoid minority and a good excuse to start off topic arguements. Speculation breeding paranoia and dissent, you gotta love it. Why would they shut down ATS (to the minority of the population that read it)? Don't you think the Illuminati reptilians from Kenya and elsewhere deserve a giggle too? I'm thinking Mars attacks "They ain't gettin the tv" stuff.

they are not going to shut down ats but I can see you tube perhaps - the additional traffic from streaming videos of the chaos would be big no doubt. our local verizon fiber line that comcast is riding on goes down all the time from the traffic it has already.

I would think that news would be available though they might ask to stick to the tv.

On the other hand with the push to cloud computing and 3g alot of very smart people have considered this to be a non issue.

I just wish the feds would leave my mac alone - it takes forever to download porn over a 7mb's connection.

Ask yourself why the government would want to shut down the net? Ask yourself truthfully.

I'd imagine once der Obamafuhrer snaps his fingers and starts sending his storm troopers out, the internet will be on lock down. Why? To blind the people of reality. See Iran recently as an example.

The crushing of the true American will not be televised. The genocide of the true American will not be told. I say, once you see the net going down....that is it. If you don't have any firearms...too bad. If you do have firearms....make sure they're pried from your cold dead hands.

GULAG AMERIKA!!!!

So, when everyone is home, trying to stay safe and stop the spread of a so called pandemic illness, they take away the cheapest and most widely used communication tool. Then all is set for their backstabbing media hounds to once again be the only news we can get.

You know, it's gotten very hard to think of the msm and the people of our present government as actual United States citizens. None of them have the slightest clue of what the people of this county think or feel...not paying attention when you're pushing someone's buttons is really a bad plan. Guess they are all on a roll, one plan right after another, all bad.

We don't have tv, and only receive 1 radio station well enough to hear...most of the time...so losing the internet news will really, really...and I mean "really", annoy me.

as a brit i keep being told by americans that immigrants have ruined my country and sharia law is now becoming really serious here. i don't know what the american media has been telling them about our countries, but i do wonder if it's part of their plan to rile up the americans (even more) against islam to increase public support for the eventual war with iran. would hardly be surprising. reminds me of the lies that were being told to americans on many news outlets about the nhs. 90% of the criticisms and bad things listed about the nhs were ridiculed here as untrue. there was real outrage here that they would be so outright slanderous and would lie so badly about an institution here, which although not 100% perfect (nothing ever is) has the total support of i doubt less than 99% of the country here.

on topic this stinks of government nonsense. i find it VERY hard to believe that if a lot of people get the flu then we need to have the internet partially shut down. god knows swine flu isn't some terrible illness anyway- it's flu. and because lots get it we might need to impose sanctions on the internet? any EXCUSE.

Well I can tell you that most of the world is waking up to the fact Iran isnt the bad guy here... and more and more ATS members are starting to agree, the evidence is stacking up against the USA government and Israel, and now more people are actually tolerant of muslims than before.

Its called an education it opens your eyes to alot of things you'd never thought you would understand.

Yes the USA is preparing to attack Iran, but it knows it will need conscription.. and the backing of the civillian population, how else better than to tell people their own rights are being attacked and they are being invaded by muslims? Its exactly how the Nazi's orchestrated the crimes against the jewish people, which then the zionists abused and turned in their favor.

Excellent pickup on this news - this is more than suspicious.

Anyone who understands the globalist and their agenda know that the net is their worst enemy - the one thing they have not been able to effectively control to shutdown the voice of the people and the real news and evidence being heard.

Any interference with the net should be immediate cause for violent reprisal against the government.

What's going on with the flu is that the CDC is reporting vaccine deaths as flu deaths. The flu has crested but as more and more people get vaccinated the death toll will rise. That would happen whether or not they have some macabre plot to decrease the population because the vaccines trigger immune responses in some people worse than in others. People who have had more vaccinations have reduced immunity because their cell membranes have been more compromised. These days they give children a lot more vaccinations then previously. The medical industry has the doctors brainwashed about the safety and effectiveness of vaccines. They have never been proved to be safe or effective. Vaccines are a complete hoax and very profitable. The American people should throw the AMA in jail and demand their money back.
