Republicans’ approval ratings worst in 25 years

They got rid of scandal-tainted Majority Leader Tom DeLay, airport shoe-tapper Larry Craig and prurient instant message typer Mark Foley, but they just can't seem to shake the gloom.

Congressional Republicans scored just 36 percent approval ratings from the American public in a CNN/Opinion Research poll released Friday.

Fifty-four percent of Americans viewed Republicans in Congress unfavorably, while 41 percent said they were rankled by Democrats. Democrats had a 53 percent approval rating to Republicans' 36.

I find this astonishing. With Obama being labeled as the Antichrist so frequently, I would have thought that the GOP ratings would have risen being as how they have taken on the role of our savior from the socialist evil.

By the enormous amount of response I can see people are no longer falling for the Repub/Dem paradigm.

Can you do me a favor and post several polls for both of the main political parties. I wonder if there is a correlation between the two parties. I remember a few months back that the Congress had a 22% approval rating.

That is across both parties. Which to me means that the American people are no longer falling for-

They did it so we are going to do it also.

It's only atonishing if you base your opinions on ATS and sites like it. The real world is just a leeetle different. Of course we here like to think we are better than others, er uh, more informed, it IS possible that isn't always the case. Repubs are really not contributing anything at all, THEY are the ones that raped the Nation under Bush. serves 'em right!

You need to consider the source of this poll and why it was conducted.

The Repubs are the minority and currently have no power whatsoever so how can their numbers be at an all time low?

This is a fake poll obviously conducted to deflect the focus from Obama's approval rating, which continues to drop every day.

With everything that CNN has been trying to label "News" lately, this report should send up a red flag.

I don't see any cause for celebration. As has already been pointed out, the entire government has low approval ratings. I don't like either party. The leadership in both parties are not serving us. They serve the special interest. And so does Obama. If you don't think so, you are a naive fool.

This is consistent with the rapid fall of xtianity among 18-35yr olds in the US. Things are starting to look up.

I take is a sign of good things to come that neither party, the Congress or the POTUS are polling anywhere close to tolerable levels.

This ship, the S.S. B.S., can't go on much longer with all the leaks. My only hope it that sinks sooner than later.

In polls, as in many other things, people see what they want to. The source is as worthy of consideration as the methodology.

Rasmussen sees things differently:

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 42% would vote for their district’s Republican congressional candidate while 37% would opt for his or her Democratic opponent.

Beginning in late June, support for Republican candidates has ranged from 41% to 44%, while support for Democrats ranged from 36% to 40%. Looking back one year ago, support for the two parties was much different. Throughout the summer of 2008, support for Democratic congressional candidates ranged from 45% to 48%. Republican support ranged from 34% to 37%.

Then I have to ask, if GOP are at the lowest in 25 years, and they're 5 points AHEAD of Dems., What does that say about the Dems.?

Regardless of any short term gains and poll results the Republican Party will struggle for a while because they are devoid of any intellectualism and pragmatism . Look here in Kiwi land I tend to vote along Conservative lines but I really must say that the kind of paranoia American right wingers display against what they term socialism should have them in therapy not seeking office . Also I expect any MP little alone Cabinet Minsters and the Prime Minster to be more qualified then someone who proclaims they took there kids to Saturday sport .

Quite honestly the only polls that matter are the ones that happen in November the first Tuesday of every even year. All the other ones are pretty much mean nothing.

Let's see the poll numbers next November....

I completely agree! And with the fragmentation of the GOP the pollsters will have even another party or two to contend with.

The GOP as we have known it since Goldwater is no more. Which fragment becomes the strongest is anyone's guess. My money is on the East Coast wing of Corporate money. Rush's party is pretty much discounted, the conservatives are trying to distance themselves from the religious right. Third party conservative is a toss up between the tea party folks, the survivalists, and who knows what other faction may raise its head between now and 2012.

I sincerely doubt if anykind of coalition can make any real difference against the Democrats.

The GOP whoever that might be is going to have to put together a platform rather than just negative crybaby finger pointing.
