Flag waiving, as you put it, is just a small part of the general trend of belittling England and the English. Even something as insignificant as a piece of cloth can attract derision from certain circles if it is done when there isn't any kind of sporting event.

When people ask if I am British, I say no. I am English.

So to answer the OP's question, I am proud to be English and England.
