Scientists claim black people less intelligent than whites in Channel 4 show

Uhuh...tell that to my brother in law who has a doctorate, 2 masters is a consultant to NASA and is the dean of physics at Tuskegee....oh and he happens to be black.

A white man would fail an IQ test written by an Australian aborigine or a Roman...or a Chinese.

IQ testing is a fraud.

I've been in gifted classes since I was 7, took the SAT's with a respectable score at 13, as well as advanced placement courses throughout HS. I'm also a member of several High IQ societies. May be these scientists need to tell me what race I truly am, because as far as I am aware, I'm black.

Here we go on 'statistics' again. I could give evidence on just about anything if I used the right questions and the right demographics. Now if they were to shed some light on what 'IQ' questions were asked and to whom and where their findings were made, it might be more plasible but to be complete, your fundings would have to be way up there as to take your sample findings from all cultures, beliefs and demographics. Needless to say, I don't put much faith in statistical beliefs.

Who made what issue? I quoted the title from the article.

And there is more than one issue.

The decision of the channel to show this is as important as the race issue, hence the thread being in the 'Media' forum.

And as for ignoring the Asian part, is it insulting to be call stupid or intelligent? I'm pretty sure Asians won't be complaining because they've been called smart!

I didn't make this white vs black, I did make it about saying one race is smarter than another using bias IQ tests, I did make this thread about the decision of a TV station to air this during Black History Month.

After thinking about it a little, I realized that these so called "IQ scores" are a product of environmental factors, rather than genetic or physical factors.

Of course all factors come into play in the equation, but environment makes up for at least 95% of this one.

This is backed up by Genetics which show that all "humans" are the same species and extremely similar in almost all aspects.

However, we do know for a fact that everyone has different environmental factors coming into play, which explains why this research is bunk.

Culture is a big big part of what this study is overlooking.

I'm all for examining the human condition and discovering new things even if the answer may be hard to handle. But all these divisive IQ studies of Group A vs. Group B seem to be on the rise.

Not only that but have you noticed the increase in labels finding there way into conversations etc.

Birthers, constitutionalists, truthers, obamatrons, fundies, conspirators, left wing, right wing, sheeple etc.

Its getting way beyond a joke with the labels as well that turn people away from facts.

agreed!!! I'm so sick of this RACE talk. There is NO SUCH THING as different races!! Different tribes of the Human Race, is what we concern ourselves way too much with.....Why the constant comparison? What do studies like this really accomplish?

Attention white people: We are white because our ancestors moved into caves and into colder climates where they didn't get as much sunlight! Get over it! The black people stayed outside! Who cares?

There is a 100% chance we are all going to HELL in a nuclear oven if we can't get past "race" issues!!!!

Accepting that the mentioned study is true...

It would seem that physical prowess is inversely proportional to intelligence.

i.e. I’m a white male and I can’t dunk a basketball or run a 4 minute mile. On the other end of the spectrum: Anyone who has ever watched Asian made porn would know why their brains are so big.

Ashley, you pointed out the various IQ tests.

And one was Men or Women.

IQ doesn't matter in this matter. We men can be played like a fiddle, intelligence be damned.

I've known some of the most brilliant minds who couldn't find the hood latch. Couldn't boil an egg.

But they could calculate the trajectory of a planet around a binary Sun system.

And yet, what a dumbass.

I don't put much stock in tests. They denote a capacity - not an ability - and certainly not a determination.

There's one part on the IQ test missing. Common sense. And among the highly tested and ranked, that's one component that's sorely missing.

Just goes to show that you can find a scientist to support anything . Many years ago I remember a study on standardized tests that focused not on genetic differences, but on socioeconomic. It found that the wording of questions was skewed to the "white experience". I'm not sure how this is any less racist, but it claimed that examples in questions were "known" more to one group than the other. The only specific example I remember is opera. I never fully understood the example because I grew up relatively well off, I attended a private boarding school, went to summer camp, dance classes, musical training, etc, but I NEVER went to an opera either nor did I listen to it. I was familiar with classical, but anyone can expose themselves to that if they desire it, as with any experience. There are plenty of free cultural experiences that are available to all if there is a desire.

Hands down one of the dumbest comparisons I have ever seen on ATS.

i am pointing out that it is perfectly acceptable to note the differences between races that we can clearly see (hair, eyes, bone structure, skin colour, etc) yet it is totally unacceptable to examine weather there are differences that aren't so obvious (cognition, physical endurance, suceptability to illness etc).
explain why this is dumb, please.

The study isn't saying all black people are less intelligent. It's not saying black people will always be less intelligent. It's not saying black people were always less intelligent.

As of right now, no matter what the cause is, the average black is less intelligent.

It's a fact of today. In 10 years, who knows maybe blacks will rise in intelligence average.

Maybe it's genetic, maybe it's environmental, maybe it's magic. But it is what it is right now.

Right now, they are less intelligent on average. If you people can't understand that, then you are contributing to your race's low scores.

I hate to post to such a purely racist thread, but I have something fast to contribute that I don't hear very often.

A great refutation to this so-called IQ anomaly (and it is rediscovered and rehashed all the time) is as follows:

If you take the IQ scores of African Americans, drop the bottom 50%, and redo the comparison, you find that this new IQ score of African Americans is significantly higher than the average of everyone else on earth.

(It is just a different type of comparison. When you drop the lower half of anything, redo the average, you typically see a big improvement.)

So if you are an African American, and in the upper 50% of IQ scores of African Americans, you happen to be in a group that is vastly superior in intelligence to the rest of the world.

It all deals with dropping the dead weight, which shifts the bell shaped curve.

Dropping dead weight to improve intelligence; I wish we could do the same at ATS sometimes

Umm. Yes there are different races. And that means genes not necessarily skin color... but that's all most people see, eh?
There are disadvantages to different races including genetic diseases, blood types, physical features and yes, intelligence.
