I was talking to a friend the other day and we worked out that we'd probably never hear all the talent out there even if we had a lifetime.

Have you ever come across an amazing unsigned track on Youtube?

Where are the best sites to look for quality unsigned music?

You are allowed to include your own stuff.

Did anyone used to listen to John Peel? He was awesome for digging up obscure stuff.

On a local level, I tend to check the listings of the more reputable live music venues, and listen to the bands on myspace....talking of which, trawling through myspace can sometimes be very fruitful for discovering new music.

On a national/international level, BBC radio 6Music is an excellent resource for unearthing new, unsigned, or obscure music. Its the nearest thing we have now to John Peel.

I think you're right, there's so much talent out there that goes undiscovered, or stays within a niche or a local scene.
