The twin STEREO spacecraft (called “Behind” and “Ahead” denoting their relative positions in space), now almost 120 degrees apart, captured this large and dramatic prominence eruption over about a 30-hour period between Sept. 26-27, 2009. Prominences, called filaments when they are viewed against the surface of the Sun, are clouds of cooler gas suspended above the Sun’s surface by magnetic forces. This erupting prominence was large enough that both spacecraft were able to observe it for hours on end, one of the first times that has occurred.

Wow, powerfull stuff. I don't know to much about it, but that seems like quite a huge explosion.
Could someone with more knowledge explain the implications on earth?
I have read somewhere that it can have a impact on Earths magnetic fields.

NB:If someone posted this allready please, moderate moderators.

that is what most would call, a CME or Coronal Mass Ejection. it consists primarily of plasma along with some heavier elements such as helium, oxygen and iron.

this can affect radio signals (to include satellite transmissions), electronics and some geological testing/monitoring equipment; but only if we are in it's path.

that is a very impressive CME to say the least though!!

That's odd, I remember when the earthquakes hit sept. 27, I went onto SOHO and tried to view the sun for the 26th and 27th but it wouldn't show those days. I find that extremely suspicious. I haven't gone back to try and view it yet, I will though.

Yep, it shows it now, but why not that day I looked which was the 27th. The site wasn't down nor did it show any problems with LASCO. Hmmmmm

Wow , that is impressive and a bit spooky at the same time..
if that was pointed at us, could cause a few glitches in our system.

Oh is that a different one! oops, better change my post!

Thanks for pointing that out!

Yeah, I fond the sun very hypnotic, might be why I have no retinas!

As for today's one, I agree, I loved reading that thread, better than any mystery novel.

Did any of the ATS Astronomers come to the rescue?

(Puts tin hat on firmly) I don't trust the guys at NASA!

(Edit to add, awesome Avatar mate, I have that suit!)
