French Police Arrest SCientist linked to Al-Qaeda at CERN

Oct. 9 (Bloomberg) -- A man arrested yesterday by French
police on suspicion of links to al-Qaeda worked at the European
Organization for Nuclear Research, the Geneva-based center said
in a statement.
“He was not a CERN employee and performed his research
under a contract with an outside institute,” the institute
said, using its French acronym. “His work did not bring him
into contact with anything that could be used for terrorism.”

Two brothers, one 32 and the other 25, were arrested
yesterday in Vienne, near Lyon, le Figaro reported on its Web
site. Police have been tracking the older of the two, who worked
with CERN, for a year because of presumed contacts with al-Qaeda
operatives in North Africa, Le Figaro said. Some of the
correspondence had to do with potential terror targets in
France.
