Chainsaw as weapon

Hollywood! Anyone who has used a chainsaw in real life knows that if you started leaping around with it and pretending it was a sword you would cut your own leg off. Chainsaws would be more dangerous to the user.

Chainsaws as weapons is a silly idea - but it looks flash.

Regards

How about powered exoskeletons with onboard chainsaw built on their wrists?

Chainsaw Bayonet (image)

I'm guessing it would be a crappy weapon. Is the OP a serial killer in training?

Why not use a pistol? Just trying to think of all the noise, fumes and general danger of cutting yourself to pieces. Powered exoskeleton not withstanding.

The Powered exoskeleton that I mentions are much bigger and stronger than humans.

Then you can just smack people out of the way with your power-assisted arms like a gorilla. Chainsaws aren't going to be useful against armor; tough polymer fabrics like kevlar and spectra will get wound up in it, and high performance ceramics or even steel will dull the blades.

Chainsaws are a favorite tool for Russian Mafia enforcers....

Knock Knock

Who's there?

Boris...

(Chainsaw starts, guy the cuts through the door frame and proceeds to slice and dice the target, makes an ungodly mess that serves as an extraordinarily effective deterrent by example.....)

Likely not that great.

Sure it could do lots of damage. But, its loud, its heavy and its not well balanced for swinging around.

Besides if you keep it running they can hear you coming a mile away. If you wait to start it and it doesn't start on the first pull you're pretty much done.

The chainsaw that I mention are have their teeth and chain made of Material that Combines Strength of Spider silk and hardness of diamond and it has razor sharp edges.

Right... Does it have a rocket laser missile launcher and 45 transforming modes of super doom gun, also?

Is this meant to be a realistic thread?

Yes!, it usually has 25mm Chaingun, Magazine fed Missile Launcher, and Chainsaw as its armaments.

You are clearly just making stuff up, seemingly based on bad anime cartoons. No offense, but how old are you? This thread seems to exist to take your... shall I say "youth-like" imagination and turn it into written words. The things you are coming up with are unrealistic, impractical, and based on absolutely nothing.

There is no evidence to suggest that any military or organization is working towards any realistic goal of creating the weapons you're talking about. There's no demand for chainsaw weapon-wielding giant robots, exoskeletons, mech suits, etc. Such a thing fills absolutely no role outside of a childrens' cartoon or a Lego playset.

There's some wild theories here on ATS, and some people around here do believe some really strange crap, but it kind of irks most adults when they read through something that's supposed to be a serious discussion on weaponry, and it ends up playing out like a brainstorming session for a new Michael Bay movie.

Why Chainsaw's use in combat is unrealistic?

Have you ever heard of blood-born pathogens? Imagine taking a shower in them.

Is there an army out there that fields chainsaws instead of guns? Or even in place of their field knives?

No?

If you can't figure out the reasons why no country does that, then something is wrong.

Because they're heavy and loud compared to a knife. Soldiers do almost all their fighting from a fair distance away. Melee is a very low priority. Most marital arts training given to soldiers is just for morale and confidence. At the moment, soldiers are so overloaded with gear that it would be completely infeasible to issue them some kind of chain-bladed weapon. Even with a powered armor suit, you'd really have to get to the point where they're very mobile and not overloaded and there is literally *nothing* more useful you could give them.

IMO, an extra LAW type weapon is always going to be a better choice. A chainsaw will let you thoroughly mess up somebody at arms length away. a LAW will let you blow up a moderately armored AFV at (a highly optimistic) 1000 meters, for about the same weight (~6lbs).

Chainsaws are stimulating to the eye and the sound literally screams kick ass.

In reality however...

Chainsaws are awkward heavy and are too damgerous to handle even if you've mastered them (don't quite see how).

How about Chainsaw used as Ammunition for Heavy Guns (rocket propelled)?
