I use to cave with a guy who went blind at age two. He used snapping of fingers sometimes otherwise he did not bother making a sound himself.
There is nothing like getting led off a mountain on a pitch black night in the middle of a thunder storm and the guy doing the leading is blind 
There are few people I admired more than this guy - had a PHd in math too.
