it would be the ultimate temptation of the flesh or more precisely to shed the flesh . Especially for those like myself who suffer from disabling conditions .

Interesting. I like and would probably enjoy the enhancements indeed. But, like all of our technology... what company/brand would be behind this? If it was microsoft I would be a bit worried that my system was going to crash or lock-up.
Ooo.. another thought would be if hackers could somehow infiltrate the frequencies somehow... living robots.
Sure this is a bit more far-fetched and comical, which is what I was going for, but if that was a possibility then yeesh...

So, I say aye - lets go for it. Then we can make storm troopers and the people of a pagan faith can play with lightsabers. (I want one!). I said pagan faith cause, well, it isn't as common and it is old if I were more of a star wars geek I would go into it but I am at a loss heh.

threads like this sure bring out the full lunar people .
as for doing it I think a souped up long 1000 years long lived human is a bad idea .
first half the guys here already said they would just love using there new power on the defenseless The same guys who tape kik me signs to people now.
then even with the grown ups theres still a problem every great leap in tek comes from the younger people as you get older and older you get more rigged in your thinking .
at this point I have seen alest 3 times were collage teachers have put a unslovible math problem up and some kid thinks its home work and SOLVES it .
this shows it wasn't unsolvable but that the older person was now convinced it was and wont even try and will even argue to you how its not possible .
its the younger hot head who thinks old people are generic that comes along and takes the next step
a planet full of 1000 year old people will have stagnated very quickly

Well i think it is inevitable that this tech will be produced and marketed.
We need to talk and decide now what we are going to tolerate and what we are going to regulate.
This technology is already well into the development stages, a revolution in the prosthetic and medical arenas.
Blindness and deafness will be a thing of the past, surgery will go beyond keyhole to maintenance nanobots, the possibilities are endless.
Once we get past the obvious fanciful bionic man dreams to the more practical solutions, we will realize that this tech has the power to end all human suffering.(Providing that it is not running Windows as a previous poster joked)

This underestimates everything that human and organic.

I think you mean 'undermines.'

Why so? What's the problem? There are already people running around with artificial limbs, replacement hearts, hips, voiceboxes...

Where do you draw the line? There isn't any obvious place. Current social convention appears to draw the line between "replacement" and "enhancement." It's "ok" to insert repalcement parts to restore function that has been lost. But not ok to improve on the basic form.

I ask why?

Because we would be no longer human. But some twisted form of what we were. There would be to many social consequences.

There would be too much power in our hands and heads. Also.....who is to inject these nanobots? TPTB? no thanks. because im pretty sure i dont want a order 66 type thing goin on(for all of you star wars geeks). I mean cant nanobots have some kind of self destruct sequence? or can it release some kind of poisin?

No thanks.

It all sounds nice but im sure over time we would lose our humanity in some way. which is sad because we dont have much humanity left as it is....do you wanna lose even more of it?

Im all for this stuff to be used as replacement.......but not enhancement.

You talk about drawing a line.

Well YOU need to draw a line.when do we stop being human? When do we lose our humanity or more like give it away in the name of so called 'enhancments'? Sooner or later we will if we keep following down the path you are advocating.

Also many of you dont understand the social consequences of such actions.

Monogamy? say goodbye to that. I mean it would be statistically impossible for you not to cheat on your partner if your lives somehow become indefinent or extended beyond what it is today.

Social interaction on ANY level would be transformed. And im betting it would be for the worse. Eventually i think we would turn out into living robots dictated by logic with hardly any emotions. which alot of people would be glad to give over....but i would not. Because emotions is what makes us human.

The Op said to forget about the borg....im sorry i cant. Because the borg will become reality if we keep going down the path we are going.

I think many of you are just looking at the fringe benfits you would be getting.

"I can lift up a car!!"

"I can breath under water"

"I can run faster then a olympic athlete"

"I dont have to eat...i just stand in the sun".

BUT you are not looking at the consequences that will spring up because of this. society would change to the point you would not even recognize it. And i dont think many of you would like it as much as you think you would.

I say we should play it safe and ban and regulate a number of these 'enhancments'.

I mean seriously people...think of the consequences of what increased life span and all a whole lot of 'supermen' running around will cause for society as a whole.Look past yourself for once. Dont be drawn into the fringe benifits of super strength and speed.

Im promising you....you most likely wont like what you see in the future.

We are becoming too dependent on technology.

What we are is 'changing'. All the time. Its just very slow when its only biology based on selective reproduction.

Human beings have the urge to improve ourselves. That urge is fundamental. Its normally expressed in our selection of mate. Also in numerous other related industries e.g. cosmetic surgery.

When nano-tech improvement becomes possible it will be adopted. The desire will create a market. If you attempt to 'draw a line' you will simply create a black market. The end result will be the same tech delivered to the populace unshackled by regulation and with criminal quality control.

We need to be mature enough in our approach to tackle these issues in the open and regulate to generate legal wealth and ensure product safety.

Unless we render ourselves extinct, at some point with the effects of both genetic and nano-tech enhancement we will move past Homo Sapiens. The difference is it will be a change of our choosing.

The trick will be carrying our laws and ethics with us so we choose wisely.

Thats my freakin point. Im not trusting us to take our laws and ethics with us. We hardly have any morals or ethics now adays anyways.

Im warning you...if we go down this path we will lose our humanity. and being human is more then just biology. We can argue semantics all day about how we want to 'improve' ourselves. But the truth is technology is turning into a crutch.

And i honestly dont think such technology should be easy to get. Im not stating we should not create a market....but we need to regulate it for real.

We should be very cautious with this technology. We need to think of how this will effect society as a whole and not just selfish a-holes who want to lift up a car.

Also who is to say nano technology could not be used to turn us into mindless sheep? could nano technology be used to lobotomize us? Or could it be used as a massive murder device? could nanobots release some kind of poisin?

Really AND I MEAN REALLY think of the consequences.

Don't misunderstand me, I dont disagree with you over potential pitfalls. There are many. Human error is quite dangerous enough when talking about nano machines. Engineering safe systems is hard at the best of times when dealing with complexity and commercial pressure. When your talking about machines working on cells it gets boggling.

The weaponisation potential of custom organisms and nano tech is scary.

That was the reason for the 'unless we render ourselves extinct' caveat in the previous post.

Thats not a reason not to do it at all. Its just a reason to do it very very carefully.

I dont necessarily think it'll mean we all become emotionless robots unless we want to and i don't see that being a particularly popular enhancement. Even the military wouldn't want that.

I think where we differ is I think that when it becomes possible it becomes inevitable in some form. We need to control the form rather than trying to deny it outright.

I dont want future generations fighting a doomed 'war on recreational nano-enhancements' while politicians try to outdo each other with moral righteousness and criminal gangs in the far east get ever richer.

I saw a talk on TED that addresses this topic in an interesting way.

So here's the TED presentation from Susan Blackmore on Memes and 'Temes'. Hope you all find it enjoyable, or at least interesting.

It is clear to me that we are on the verge of a transition from Homo Sapiens to something else. Homo Sapiens Mutatio?

Once you have discovered something, you cannot un-discover it because of potentials that you do not like.

This technology has the power to give some people a new life, the blind , the deaf, people with motor skill impairments, nerve damage etc.

Those are just a few examples of medical improvements.
I am sure if i thought about it a bit more i could probably add to that list.

Medical corrections,Sensory Enhancements, Physical Enhancements, Communication Enhancements and Information Enhancements.

There are a lot of aspects that need to be discussed with this emerging technology, i foresee a new blackmarket also emerging from this.

Maybe new laws against elicit nano systems in Casino's and such, lol.

Whatever, that is the Brave New World into which we are heading, we can either engage it and take some control in it's development direction or we can sit back and let it go unfettered.

I guess in time people will feel more interested in the subject.

Until then i shall ponder the ramifications and possibility's.

Maybe i should've called the thread something dramatic in bold letters, lol.
