What about all the earthquakes in really strange locations?

Seems to be we are going through a period of earthquakes in many "diverse" locales.

What strange locations? Samoa sits on the Pacific fault line, and Indonesia, in particular the Padang area have earthquakes all the time.

let's try it in simpler terms...what temblors don't really belong considering the last few weeks of EQ history?

Crete;Virgin Isle's;Dominican repub; Taiwan; are a few that stand out.

Thanks for informing us all of this activity and the potential it may or may not have. You obviously study GEE on a regular basis and probably understand the data it provides. Also likely that you understand it more than most people on this site.

A star and flag for trying to educate the masses (including me).

Here's an example of a slip fault...

Hey Hx...You are up late or very early aren't you? I woke up about 3:00 AM and so far haven't been able to get back to sleep.

But back to the thread, what do you think of the numerous temblors in Cali the last few days? Could it be related to the massive one in Samoa and Sumatra?

What we're seeing is the bottom 2 in the first picture...

Not a up or down slippage...a sliding left/right...north/south slippage...

The bigger spikes are when they get locked up and release energy...

The below 3rd pic is more of what I'm looking at...but the above are useful also...

Is that 180 or.............. :shk:

I wouldn't call that 180 degrees since it isn't a pure sinusoidal signal. It would be more accurate to say the overall signal is inverted between the first and second graphs.

Ok, thanks for all help.
Now, what is unusual to all this?
This is happening all the time i thought.

Can you post please a screen shot or two of the GEE readings for us?

Let us assume there are 3 planes in a physical world...

Lets say [X] is East and West...

Lets say [Y] is North and South...

Lets say [Z] is Vertical (up & down)...

In GEE the BHE is a movement east & west of a average 0 position...

In GEE the BHN is a movement north & south of a average 0 position...

In GEE the BHZ is a movement vertical of a average 0 position...

When seeing BHE moving lower than 0 it indicates a west movement...

When seeing BHN moving higher than 0 it indicates a north movement...

If E is moving higher and N is moving lower...we see a SE movement...

If Z fails to spike it is a lateral movement not vertical...

When Z spikes shortly after a E/N movement it usually indicates a slip that has moved...has hit a ~bump~ and locked briefly...then unlocked...releasing energy...

Does this help any or am I wrong? (awaiting more flames :shk: )

Wonderful teaching! So these are the different lines one would see on the graphs that you are naming (BHZ, ect) right?

Here is a moment of calmness...

Here is a image of the basic channel information and scales used in the program...

Larger number swings and shorter time span indicate greater energy...

All 3 planes are shown E...N...Z...

Hey I live here in Bishop CA, about 45-50min away from Lone Pine, lived here basically all my life. I have not felt anything, but if I do I will be sure and let you know. All seems fine.

If any of you use Firefox, you can just do an add on of eQuake - when an earthquake happens, your browser will shake like a bowl of jello - then just right click on the tiny icon on the bottom of your browser to see the location and scale.

The icon is normally blue, but turns red when an earthquake occurs.

You also have the option of clicking on the home website to view more details re that earthquake or others.

You can also set the options to alert you to whatever range/scale of earthquakes you choose - I have mine set to alert to anything 5.0 and above.

Cool program - and free.

Btw, the Philippines just had a 6.6

eQuake
