Lots of little ones in Cali

Topic started on 3-10-2009 @ 04:27 AM by AlwaysQuestion

I woke this morning and had my daily check on the earth-action. I know that California goes through patches of many tremors/quakes but this seems a bit excessive. I only make note of it due to the shakings that have been happening elsewhere...

Idle_Rocker brought this article to my attention in my calculated earthquake thread.....

Major quakes can weaken seismic faults far away, scientists say

It might explain a few of the tremors you are getting on the west coast...

Peace

Excellent - I know some people just shout 'no' it's not possible but regardless of distance and the weights involved when these things shift it must have a consequence elsewhere.....

Cali is coming and I dread to think how it will pan out... let's hope it is years away.

I see a 5.2 - that's not really a little one.

Those interested in seismic monitoring with GEE may want to open the CI network, select the CWC station, and then the BHZ channel. That's close to where these earthquakes are occurring, I personally catched the last 4.5 in real-time.

At least the energy is being dispersed in smaller quakes over a longevity of time, than a massive quake all at once.

This page shows many more earthquakes (including those smaller than magnitude 2.5) from that area:

california is a large state and has many many faults, the ground is always shaking around here.
One thing to note is that the quakes they are calling central cal are not at all in central cal, they are on the east side of the sierra nevada mountain range.
The sierra nevada mtns are still being pushed up, so the ground shakes alot, most of which cant be felt.
This area is also home to several large volcanoes, mammoth mtn, june mtn and a whole host of others i dont know the names of.
This quake activity is likely vulcanism related.

There WILL be a large earthquake in cali at some point, and there is nothing that can be doen to prevent it.
Its possible that at some point predictions can be made in areas of intense study, where patterns can be recognized over time.

People should be more concerned about activity in the mammoth area, becuase it is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions ever.
780,000 years ago a mountain blew its top and left long valley caldera

en.wikipedia.org...
the caldera is 20 miles long and 11 miles wide.

this is the extent of the major ash fall.
the explosion was so big that it threw rocks all the way to iowa
When it erupted lava flowed almost 60 miles down the san joaquin river canyon to leave a layer several hundred feet thick.

Thats something for everybody to worry about
