Federal lawmakers responsible for overseeing the US economy have received millions of dollars from Wall Street firms. Since 2001, eight of the most troubled firms have donated $64.2 million to congressional candidates, presidential candidates and the Republican and Democratic parties. As senators, Barack Obama and John McCain received a combined total of $3.1 million. The donors include investment bankers Bear Stearns, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, insurer American International Group, and mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Quite disturbing when you look at what has been done to reduce these companies' losses in the ongoing financial crisis. Is the US of A this corrupt? Maybe it's time to concentrate on politics rather than selling ones' souls to-- and building alliances with the rich and powerful when it comes to American elections. It is impossible to be heared in the American election unless you have a hundred million dollars brought in via methods we know from the Dark Ages when the Church promised to anyone who could pay, free tickets around purgatory and the ability to buy oneself out of Hell..... This is corruption, no less....

Yes America has become corrupted. No surprise. I think this stuff goes back a long long time. Like hundreds of years. It's just gotten worse because their are more corporations out there then a 100 years ago. Corporatism can turn to fascism. That is the scary part of this.

It always warms my heart to see another person wake up and smell the fascism. The largest campaign donors in this last election were all the same banks that got bailed out or in some way gained financially from the government bailout. Who'd a thunk it?

Wait! This is news how?

Wasn't Ronald Reagan making the jokes about politicians in Congress selling their votes to the highest bidder while he was in office?

"Politics is supposed to be the second oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first."

Matter of fact, there are satirical political cartoons going back to before the Civil War stating much the same, relating corporate power and wealth with politics. Bribery and scandal were standard for the 19th century. Government was often defined by corruption in one form or another. The U.S. Senate was called the "Millionaire's Club" as many Senators had either made their money through their business connections or through bribes.

It's nice that people are waking up and smelling the coffee, but this is just business as usual for our government and has been since 1829.

Time to vote the SOBs out. Any one who is disliked by the mass media and has the least amount of contributions sounds like the guy to vote for all other things being equal.

More important than our vote is getting people to understand our rights as juries so we can undo the damage done by Congress. I spend the weekends at fleamarkets and Farmers Markets talking to people about the Federal reserve and Jury rights.

The primary function of the independent juror, is not as many think, to dispense punishment to fellow citizens accused of breaking various laws, but rather to protect fellow citizens from tyrannical abuses of power by the government! fija.org...

The People have the ultimate power. They choose their representatives when they vote.

However, the ultimate power and insurance they have against government run amok is their power in the jury.

It is the jury who decides on whether there is “probable cause” to cause a person to answer to the court AFTER they have heard testimony given under “oath or affirmation”. Today’s system is so perverted that we actually allow ONE prosecutor to decide if, when, and what charges will be brought, if any! This is the first place the people have given away their power.

If a grand or petit jury decides charges should be brought against someone, it is they who get to decide to what extent after hearing an unbiased reason IN LAW for the proposed charges. This is the second place the citizen gives away his power.

If an accused is called to answer charges, the JURY alone not only decides upon guilt or innocense; THEY have the right to judge the law that the accused is alledged to have broken. That is where the term “jury nullification” comes from. A modern jury simply gives a verdict of “not guilty” which does NOTHING to challenge the law they are judging! Of course, they are not “nullifying” their verdict; the attempt is to nullify the law whether it is unconstitutional or improperly applied. The potential jury member of today is UNLAWFULLY instructed by the judge that they are triers of the facts and nothing more. Any potential juror who did not assent to those instructions and who understood the ancient right of declaring a law unconstitutional would not be allowed to sit on a jury. A judge is NOTHING more than a referee and is there to be certain that the laws are applied, and in some cases, interpreted and used in that manner as he sees they were meant to be. HOWEVER, the jury is still the final judge— they can ignore a judge they feel he is wrong. This is the third and final chapter in the People’s forfeiture of their rights!

They simply do not understand that the SCOTUS is not the final judge— THEY ARE! The next time someone asks you about the three branches of government in the U. S. democratic Republic I hope you take the opportunity to enlighten them to their benefit and the benefit of every citizen. The three branches of government are the Executive (President/Courts) Legislative (House and Senate) and the Sovereigns (the citizens)! Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! Merry Colin

Is it just me, or should there have been international or super- or pan national laws against bringing the world to war, killing hundreds of thousands of more or less innocent people because some Saudi prince figured he'd send a few of his devotees into a couple landmark using jet liners, killing a total of more than (but compared to the retaliation, only) 3,000 civilians? Shouldn't there be similar laws and actions taken against nations allowing private funding of judges, politicans and presidents or prime ministers? Shouldn't there be a super/pan national panel of judges to react against organised torture of "PoW's" many of which were at the wrong place and at the wrong time, had a name similar to some Afgan bandit et cetera? Shouldn't there be a working law prohibiting a nation to attack it's own people with terrible weapons, and isolate whole areas of the land with concrete walls guarded by armed men? Well, guess what, there are such laws, and one of them is the War Crime Court in Haag, Holland. What does it take? Who can bring in let's say George Bush jr. to court refering to the proven war crimes I have already mentioned. When the material held back by the sitting administration, to avoid a stirr at the time it surfaced, proving how the Bush admin. are directly responcible for allowing the use of long lasting torture against prisoners emprisoned with no trial, infront of the whole world. What about the heads of the Pentagon, shouldn't they be just as responcible for their misconduct? Atleast my sence of justice and historic wisdom calls for books to be opened, witnesses brought forward, and have the guilty judged and the innocent be set free. Where is the justice in this world. Why don't nations have mechanisms to detect and react upon violent and generally insane leaders like Bush and certain others around this world?

Corruption is one thing. But killing a man for a wound and a boy for a scratch isn't sound justice.

Who would enforce your super-laws? The same people committing the crimes in the first place?

The world does have a system in place for keeping tyrants in check, its called the "Torch, Pitchfork & Barrel of a Gun" system. Unfortunately, people are all too reluctant to actually kill the buggers, so we end up where we are now.

There would have to be an active collaboration between the nations of the planet. Such as the Security Council or similar of the UN could be given power to if nessasary by force bring war criminals, despots and corrupt, or straight out evil political and military leaders if they prove to wage war on false pretences, lies and fundy intelligence made to fit a mad agenda. Just an example, though I have no idea whether it would be very _secure_ way of dealing with this mad world. In a Utopia there would have to be mechanisms like this.

Another natural thing the UN should be given clear mandate in -- to limit the rise in world population. Not as drastically as China's one child policy perhaps, but the rise in the world population must be controlled somehow.

-- Perhaps in the future, we are all sterile, and one would have to apply and go through training in order to be given responcibility to have a perfect hybrid of the two of them made and installed in giant glass tubes installed in our homes, so they could see the full creation of their perfect offspring, to grow until the chicken is ready to hatch so to speak. Who knows? Everything would be a plan on the run, where everyone could be happy and a free ride down the valley, where everything is possible and more, nothing is impossible.... Dreams...zzz... time to sleep. Prolly come back in the morning after a good night's sleep.

It's a nice thought and I don't want to argue with you but, as said, who would judge and enforce. The UN is a collaboration of the world's countries. These countries are made up of the same corrupt people you (and I) have a problem with.

The world would have to be completely demilitarised, and instead of corrupt politicans to rule we would have a common law, and rulers among the brightest minds the Earth could produce, philosophers, scientists, artists, desent people, visionaries, experts on economy, law, physics, Nobel Price winners, like some giant roundtable, only there would be no swords on it. And not todays beurocrates and sweettalkers promising tax cuts, money for nothing, and basically chase the wind here and there in a race to stick their heads up in the TV frame and into people's hypnotised minds, making us believe more clouds means hotter climate for instance. If the climate is getting hotter it is because of the Sun is getting hotter. And it would be natural for the climate to become warmer, the geological "age" so to speak - we currently live in is often called the little ice age.
